Trophy case built in locker room for Paul & Jug

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

Harbaugh had this built in the offseason.

It's in the Schembechler Hall locker room.

Far cry from how we used to treat it.

The following year in 1954, the trophy was left on the field for half an hour after Michigan defeated the Spartans 33–7. "We'll find a place for the trophy," Crisler told The Michigan Daily after game. The Paul Bunyan Trophy was stored in the Michigan Stadium locker room in one of the equipment closets.

Despite winning in 1954 and 1955, Michigan did not engrave their scores onto the neglected trophy. When the Spartans won in 1956, they engraved the Wolverine victories onto the trophy.

The 1958 game was a 12–12 tie. The favored Spartans were so embarrassed that they didn't win, they originally refused to keep the trophy while Michigan refused to take the trophy. Michigan State eventually relented and kept the trophy.

I have been thinking about this as well. It's a contrived trophy anyway. Might as well give it some history. Blue would work, or perhaps khaki? No need to deface it, just a tasteful 'freshening'. Have the woman that paints the scores on the jug do it or better yet, have the original artist or surviving family member do it.

I completely understand the players wanting to parade it around that shithole Sparty calls a stadium. Felt that way myself. in retrospect, though, this was probably better.

Should festoon the tap in an Ann Arbor bar. Brew a piss-weak pilsner for the trophy to symbolize our disdain for the "rivalry." If cow college should somehow manage to get Paul back temporarily, glue the "trophy" to a couch and present the ensemble to symbolize that we must have been sleeping that game. Sparty will burn that sucker up and we can be done with the matter. The jug stays.

Sweet. I like the idea of putting Paul more in the spotlight. After the last 7 years we realize how much losing him sucks and while MSU and OSU are different type of rivalries I still look forward to it because it's a midseason test usually around Halloween.

...than not.  But let's be real here.  The Paul Bunyan trophy was not a "thing" until MSU treated it like the Lombardi trophy.  No one outside of the state of Michigan really knew about it until Sparty started showing it off on the field for all the national coverage to see.  It means a lot for them to have it.  For us, it's a nice benefit of stomping an in-state rival.

There is actually a post season trophy case as well (and yes we made it big enough to hold the B1G Championship and National Championship trophies)
The stress from making these took about 3 years off my life but it was cool working with coach and football staff to get them designed and built.
