The full announcement from NBA.com goes into some detail as well (LINK).
In addition to listing some individual game achievements throughout the month, there is also a summary which provides a good statistical rationale:
In 23 games (21 starts) overall on the season, Burke is averaging 13.7 points and 3.3 rebounds, along with a team-leading 5.0 assists in 30.2 minutes per game.
Congratulations to Trey Burke!

when you're not one of the best athletes in the nba, your success is more reliant on having better basketball skills than those of the better athletes.
trey demonstrated that, without a doubt, his basketball skills were above those of his college peers. but, that doesn't mean they would be better enough when going against better athletes. many people predicted that they wouldn't be.
he's proved them wrong.
it's not complicated.
