As a Knicks fan, Michigan fan/alum, and Trey Burke fan I'm really hoping he gets another shot at the NBA. Seems like he's improved his shooting and penetration (competition caveats apply, but 30 ppg and 44% from 3 this month!) and I think he could score and pass in the NBA, but ability to keep up on D with taller/faster guys is the big question mark.

IIRC, Manny also tore it up in the D league but wasn't able to do much in the NBA. Maybe Trey's game will finally mesh with the NBA but D league success doesn't mean you are fit for the NBA. It's painful to think what could have been had Trey, Nik, GR3 etc had stayed at Michigan.

The vast majority of teams now have D-league affiliates, and hire coaches to install the same systems being run at the NBA level. This has helped keep some players in the US rather than heading to Europe, increasing the talent pool. 2-way contracts have helped with that even more. It’s certainly a couple rings below the NBA, but it will be easier for Trey to use the D-League as a springboard towards another NBA chance than it was for Manny Harris.

The Knicks have a roster problem.  They want to call up Burke but have no spots available.  Only one player has a non-guaranteed contract so they're looking to make a trade of some kind to free up a spot.  If they can't trade by the 10th or waive the one non-guaranteed PG by the 7th in time to clear waivers by the 10th, Burke can be picked up by any team.  So... it sounds likely he will be on an NBA team by mid-month.

I’m not the biggest NBA guy, so could someone tell me how Trey didn’t make any teams? Other than his size I feel like he was one of the more well rounded players I’ve seen. I’d think he could at least be a serviceable backup.

Is his lack of speed to make up for his size on defense. His shooting was also not helping him but had improved all around last season. Just too much of a liability on defense and not enough of an offensive threat. I’m hopeful he gets another shot, but it doesn’t shock me that he is tearing it up in the G League. Some guys are just 4A players.
