But you're talking about 8 scholorships a year. JT screwed the pooch on this, but that kills the program, and IME, is a bit too far. I know that won't be popular around here, but I think that last season should be vacated, JT should be out at least 7 (I would have been fine with 5 if OSU would have started there), and maybe 2-3 scholarships a year for a couple years, along with the appropriate probation, etc.

The program should be punished, not killed.

Personally, as a Michigan fan, I only want OSU punished and not killed, because I don't want it to ruin the best rivalry in college football.

I don't think anything would kill OSU's program. Even the death penalty. Yes, they might be bad for a decade, but it's still Ohio where they pump a lot of talent out and people down there bleed, breath, and birth red and grey. They would still get back up there sooner or later. Thus any penalty should be very harsh to get any effect what-so-ever.

And a 1-year postseason ban is 50%. That, to me, is fair, especially if they are not forced to vacate bowl wins, etc.

Plus it will take more than that to ruin OSU's program. They'll still have mostly four star recruits and win 7, 8 or even 9 games a year. But it WOULD take them down a peg for several years, which I think--considering not only this, but also the "loaner" cars, etc.--is deserved.

5 game suspensions against cupcakes (and 1 decent opponent) in one year means nothing. It's a nothing punishment.

Don't forget that the NCAA took a lot of crap for letting the Tatgate participants play in the bowl game and suspending them afterward. To discover later that the coach knew and lied about it means the hammer is coming.

a lot of people are confusing the President of OSU with the Athletic Director of OSU. It wasn't the AD who said he hoped Tresserl wouldn't fire him, it was the president. Their AD has enough pride, don't worry.

I still think Tressel forwarded at least one of the emails to someone else. No other reason for Smith to interject with 'no comment' when this question came up during the presser. Once revealed Tressel will have to be terminated.

I would be all for Tressel staying coach at OSU if he did forward those emails. If he did, he could have signed his papers in good faith, knowing that OSU should have followed up.

OTOH, it would mean a loss of institutional control there, and would mean that OSU as a whole would probably be wayyyyyy worse off than having a rogue coach. That would certainly mean huge scholarship reductions, multi-season bowl bans and maybe a TV ban or something else ridiculous.

I thought 5 games was what he deserved the first time I saw what he had done. He should pay for his actions at least the same amount as the players. Granted he is an adult and the coach he may deserve more but at least they are getting closer. All a pub stunt I think though. OSU slaps him on the wrist knowing public backlash will be bad, he punishes himself more and asks the AD to allow him to take 5 games instead of 2. It was all planned, but I think a 5 game suspension is fair.

Its obvious that he knows he's fucked. This situation from start to finsih has been handled worse than any other I have seen from an entire program in quite some time.

And queue Gee saying that he will be suspended 5 games instead...

But seriously, Tressel should step down. He is tarnished now and egregiously broke some major, sacred rules. All for the sake if an NC run. This is a a desperation move after the nation didn't buy the press conference.

own suspension now that coach upped his own to match theirs after very publicly calling those guys out last December.

No hard feelings guys, right...

Why didn't he do this right away? Instead of waiting this long and hearing all the backlash. This just another weak move from a dirty dirtball who's dirtier than a dirt-filled dirt sandwich.

"We tried to pull a fast one and no one bought it except our most die hard fans, so let's up it a few games and hope people think our coach means business because he added games to his own suspension. What a heck of a guy!"

I hope no one buys this crap

but most of the buckeye fans here where I live(southern ohio) think that the NCAA will comedown very hard on Tre$$. Many around here think the good times have just cameto a sudden stop. I hope they are right!

Hey Coach Tress, seems like sentiment is growing that your punishment was too lenient. Are you seeing all this outrage?

Now we just need to add:

"And we will forfeit all wins from last season, open our entire program to NCAA and third party investigators as approved by the NCAA, and devote one week of practice time per year to player and coach education on NCAA rules."

It should be 10 games. Take the players suspension (5 games) and double it to 10 games for lying about it. Andale him donate twice the amount of money that the players involved have to donate to charity. How does that sound to everyone?

Sorry, I don't buy this has anything to do with satisfying the NCAA. That shameful presser was so condescending and arrogant, OSU believes they yanked the NCAA's chain enough that the are GOOD. Scott free!

This has everything to do with a coach trying to save a little face in the locker room before Spring practice begins. Tressel threw the Tat Five under the bus and is backpedaling before things behind the scenes spin out of control. There's already been murmurs of upset families wondering about the fairness of coach getting less than players. This is how coaches lose entire teams. This has nothing to do with the NCAA - Gene Smith already hit the "sweet spot."

Just my opinion, but I trust nothing coming out of Columbus as anymore than cheap PR. This is no different.

Should mean that he can't recruit or spend any time with the team or anyone associated with the team until he returns...

Until that's the case, the fact that he's not on the field with them for 3 hours of the week (and who knows, maybe he'll be calling in to talk to the coordinators) means that a suspension is MEANINGLESS.

were 5 conference games I think it might be severe enough. It will be interesting to see what the NCAA has to say about this. I don't think letting him choose his own penalty should fly.

Jim Tressel is possibly the least genuine man on planet Earth. The writer who called him an "image whore" nailed it. Everything is calculated, this especially.

If you buy his act or ever did, you are a sucker of the worst order.

Think they should have last year vacated, as he knowingly played ineligible players.

Refund the Sugar Bowl money - donate to charity?

Vest out for all non-conference plus half conference games, and no bowl game.

Don't think tossu will ever fire this hypocrite.

over estimating the NCAA's ability and wherewithal. Tressel is everything that is wrong with college athletics? Good lord, get a grip. I'm wondering when Tressel ISN'T fired and his NCAA sanction is only token above what stands now, what exactly you will do? I suggest you draft an angry letter now so when the time comes, you will be prepared to let the NCAA know just exactly what is wrong with college athletics.

...which doesn't make me feel good, but that is the right thing to do. OSU should forfeit their share of the Sugar Bowl payment to the rest of the schools in the B1G (or the entire payment from the bowl for all I care, as long as it doesn't come from anyone else's share).

Then - the tOSU should not be allowed to play another football game until they are audited by the NCAA, at tUoOS cost, to verify the eligibility of every single player (might also want to verify booster compliance on this, there's a car dealership they could probably start with.)

Finally, Tressel should get a show cause slapped on him, and the CBus faithful can put on a coat of tar and run him out of town.

We should then be able to get on with our Hokamania undistracted.
