Torrian Wilson puts Michigan in his top 3

Submitted by CincinnatiWolverine on

It would be nice to get this guy. Rodriguez is doing well in the state of Florida again this year.

Good. Michigan is winning the recruiting battles in State (of Florida) over MSU.

I'd take a kid from Florida over a similar rated kid from Michigan almost any day. There are exceptions, but it seems that the kids in the south play against better competition week in and week out.

What do you mean "like frostbite".... Like it's not a proven fact that players from the south play worse in colder climates. In other words they're bigger pussies and when the cold weather hits it does all sorts of things to them. It breaks concentration b/c they're out there thinking of how cold it is rather than what's going on in the game. Receivers' hands become rock solid and they can't catch anything (were u not there last year when Tay Odoms all of a sudden became nearly ineffective when the cold weather hit?). Kickers can't kick the ball anymore (not good since Gibbons is from Florida). It all around just spells bad news for Florida kids. There are some exceptions. Some aren't pussies. Some still do just fine but the majority of them do not.

....that's right, like the following:

Garrett Rivas (who was a KICKER)
Jonas Mouton (California, which I think is a warm climate)
Carlos Brown (Franklin, GA)
Tom F-ing Brady (Southern California)
Greg Mathews (Orlando, FL)
Donovan Warren (LBC, CA)
Tate (SD, CA)
Anthony Thomas (Winnfield, Louisiana)
Brian Griese (Miami, FL)
Chris Howard (Kenner, Louisiana)

Yep, looks like a group of "pussies" to me. Your word in quotes, not mine.

Pretty good list, except (a) TB is from NorCal, which is pretty warm but had plenty of cold weather, and (b) two of the best players ever at Michigan (and from Florida, specifically) are Steve Hutchinson and fucking Anthony Carter. Calling AC a pussy makes me want to punch a human. And I don't know if your awesome comment included linemen, but Hutchinson is the best non-Jake-Long lineman ever at UM, IMO. Not a pussy.

I think that right now we have one of the deepest o-lines that I can remember. They are young, inexperienced, but increadibly athletic. RR was quoted the other day that you could see as many as 12 or 13 play this year. How do you think this helps or hurts our Recruting with guys like Henderson and Wilson. On one hand we are giving our young guys the opprotunity to start but on the other we have 16 Scholarship players and 3 Seniors. IMO if you see alot of young guys play this year it is a crap shoot of how those high end players look at the situation. I think that PT is in the back of every recruits mind and waiting 3 years to see the field can hurt. The other way to look at it is the 5 and high 4 star recruits are told and believe that they can play with anyone at any level. It some cases this is true but most not so much.

Hmm, Pete Carroll has this figured out... He pulls in multiple highly rated OL every year despite intense competition and highly rated recruits. No reason we can't do it, especially if we start churning out guys who get drafted. USC has put a ton of OL players into the NFL under Carroll.

Actually... until 2006... our Oline consistently put 2-3 NFL starters on the field. I dont see a NFL starter on our roster today, given last years performance. Hopefully that changes. At this point, I am cautiously optimistic about our improvement... but improve it must, as last year was a disaster.

It wont hurt recruiting... what will hurt is if our coaches do not develop and improve our Oline... that, my friend, will be a differential advantage and major decision criteria for oline recruits.

I was talking numbers. If RR's statement from the big ten media days holds true and they rotate and play 12 or 13 that they can win with. I think that would be great depth. Personally I think the 8 or 9 will play in non clean up time. But even then when is the last time we had 12 or 13 ready to go and see the field.

I don't think landing a class of 3 this year will hurt at all. Pace projects to center, Torrian to Guard and Seantrel to Tackle. Most teams I would imagine at least have a 2-deep roster of OL--so 10. Having 12 or 13 is where you would want to have your roster at anyways...

he's unlikely to go to stanford b/c of the distance and the number of committments they already have. this seems to just be a question of whether we can get him to leave home. his high school traditionally sends almost all of its good players to miami.

As time goes on, it seems like Seantrel is more of a pipe dream (though 8-4 could change that) it's good to hear we are closing in on a top OL recruit.

Torrian Wilson, come on down!

...and according to what I can see on the team's roster, there are currently 22 offensive linemen on the team. That includes 5 preferred walk-ons, 3 scholarship freshmen, and 4 redshirt freshmen.

Only Moosman, Ortmann and McAvoy leave next year (Schilling, Dorrestein and Ferrara will be 5th year guys).

So next year, 19 returning, Pace coming in.

We are in decent shape with Wilson, and Henderson is all over the place. Chances are we also bring in another batch of preferred walk-ons.

I think the O-line depth is okay. Looks pretty good. We won't be hurt badly by missing out on these guys. That said, I'd like them both to come to Michigan.

This is one recruitment where my natural pessimism wins out. There is so much positive energy out there that would lead Wilson to Ann Arbor...except the high school he attends. Yeah, he's said he's his own man, and yeah, he has family in the area so the distance factor isn't big, and yeah he's said he wants a strong academic school and yeah he's said we lead, etc etc...

I'll believe it when I see it. A Miami Northwestern kid that the Hurricanes want? I'll believe he's going elsewhere when the ink on the LOI is dry.

I can believe it. RichRod's offenses at WVU consistently ran for over 250+ yards a game. That should be a really nice advantage when recruiting good running backs, dual threat QBs, and offensive linemen. Also, Randy Shannon, for whatever reason, doesn't seem to be doing a great job of keeping local talent at home.

If I were a OL I would prefer to play in the mild climes of the north in the fall.
LLoyd (and others I'm sure), used the variety of weather in the North as a recruiting tool.
