Too many ofers on offense

Submitted by mabrsu on
Per Rivals we are offering another RB. I cannot believe the amount of offers going out to the offense. 6 or 7 to QB already, at least 10 RBs, and we have 3 WR commits but there are other offers out there still for the slot. I find this unbelievable considering we have more players on offense on the roster already! We need to be dishing out offers for the defense seriously. I think there is only one ILB offer on the table to that guy from Ohio. Like that isn't a big need or anything. Can't really picture this ever being a defensive team even though RR had good defenses at WV. Trust me I saw that fiesta bowl against OU. The numbers alone on defense will make it hard to compete. We must have the Lo Woods, Cullen Christians, Marvin Robinsons of the world in the bag or something.

that doesn't mean all 10RBs will commit. I'm sure R.R. and his staff know a hell of a lot about recruiting and giving offers then you son. There is method to this madness.

Rodriguez has stated that the first defensive recruit to accept an offer will be the only defensive recruit in the class of 2010. He wants to reserve the other 24 slots for offensive players. Perhaps you should write Rodriguez a letter or contact him at his office. I'm sure he doesn't realize that we need defensive players, too. You would be doing him a favor. Thank goodness you're around.

Nobody's saying that. But when we don't know how many offers are out there and it's ONE FULL YEAR before signing day, it's too early to start lambasting the coaching staff for not putting out enough defensive offers. Signing day was just three weeks ago!

You have to offer a lot of kids to get a decent number to commit. Also, I would expect to see a few offensive players moved to defense if they get caught in the numbers game. Then, of course, there is attrition. Maybe Threet will go to EMU and they can start a pipeline from UM to EMU for players who won't see a lot of playing time at UM. It won't work for the Florida players, who can transfer to USF, UCF, FAU, or FIU if they aren't quite good enough for an elite program, but it might help both RR and Ron English if an arrangement was made. RR gets more control over his attrition and the appearance of benevolence, and English gets recruits he normally wouldn't get. And it's not like the move from Ann Arbor to Ypsi is that far, either. Anyway, I am not worried yet. If, however, defense becomes a chronic problem for UM, I will be concerned at the direction of the program. For now, though, I am giving RR a "free ride" and trusting his judgement until I see reason to feel differently. As a person who "bitched loud and long" about Carr's offense for the last four years of his tenure at UM, I am in the "you asked for it, you got it" position right now. Consequently, I am very happy to see him concentrate on the offense. So, I am happy to see as many recruits on that side of the ball as RR wants to sign.

According to the recruiting board at Varsity Blue we have 5 RB offers out there. With this new one that you speak of on rivals that brings us to 6. Don't worry my child, they won't all commit to us. And if they do, well then we'll be running a true ninja offense won't we? And that is what we wanted all along.

I am just going to go ahead and make all the jokes for this post. -OMG RR doesn't know he's not in the Big East -RR doesn't respect UM's defensive tradition -Les Miles recruits only defensive players -RR not worry about DEFENSE he know defense be GOOD -Greg Robinson is hurting our defensive recruiting -Some sort of recipe involving roadkill -FAIL Feel free to add any others that I may have forgotten.

There are at least 8 running backs with Michigan offers: Brennan Clay Mack Brown Stephen Hopkins Dietrich Riley Austin White Cassius McDowell Marcus Lattimore Darion Hall That's all I can think of, but I guess there could be 10. There's more than 6, anyway.

basically dont ever say anything that could even remotely be construed as bad about rr unless you want the "OMG RETARD" postings. in case you cant tell by reading this blog, rr is a slight step below jesus when it comes to perfection. he has never made a single mistake. ever. in his entire life. ever. and if you think otherwise you're just a fairweather fan who had an obsession with satan himself, lloyd carr. you asshole.

Just don't say stupid shit that makes it sound like you know more about recruiting/coaching than the actual coaches. It's one thing to ask the questions "Do we have more defensive recruits? Do those offers go out later?" It's another thing to say "OMG RR isn't recruiting defensive players" One's a question the other is just stupid. Oh, and RR is above Jesus but below Unicorns. A lot below.

It is one thing to be objective and it is another to talk out of your ass, which is what your buddy and you are doing. Given that it is February, we have almost an entire year to recruit, its not like signing day is coming up in another week or two. Secondly, out of the 22 recruits we just signed, 10 of them happen to be on defense, a five star defensive tackle and two at defensive end, our biggest position of need last year. If you want to throw in Cam Gordon and Denard Robinson who could end up on defense down the line, that is 12 defensive recruits. Keep in mind also that we lost 2 defensive tackles on signing day as well. So to say that we aren't recruiting defense is absurd. As for next year, we have 11 months until signing day so there is nothing to worry about. As others have already stated, outside of the top defensive guys out there, it takes a longer time to evaluate these guys to see how they will project in college.

Drew, this post, and thus you, is misguided because: a) Scholarships offers are not irrevokable. If we get 3 RB's, we'll pull the rest of the offers. All 8 will not possibly come. b) Even if we didn't pull offers, the closing rate on scholarship offers is probably somewhere under 40%. If we need 3 to 4 RB's (after this year, the only RB's on the roster will be Shaw, Cox, and Toussaint (possibly Smith and Jones, but people say they'll be slots) offering eight is a perfectly reasonable thing to do.

I know, but by creating a strawman argument where you claim that everyone who disagrees does so out of a slavish devotion to Rodriguez rather than the fact that the post makes no sense, you are misguided.

you havent been on this blog long enough to understand. someone posts a comment that others deem is stupid, then the wla and their hordes of chrisgocomments come on to bully that person. it doesnt seem to make sense, since if the commment was that stupid in the first place they could have just ignored it....

maybe the man was worried about the state of our defense and would like to see a bit more of a priority on the defense side of the ball for recruting? i dont know what he was thinking. but given what our defense did last year, what we all think it might do this year, and rr's fascination with the offensive side of the ball, i would not say this post makes "no sense"

We already have some DB's who are likely to commit, as you mentioned. The 2010 defensive tackle crop is weak. That's not to say that we won't offer any, but those may take a while. We already have a pretty good chance with some DE's. So that leaves linebacker and DT as points of emphasis. And like MGoObes said above, defensive players take longer to evaluate. And while we're thin at PROVEN linebackers, we have a decent number of unproven/incoming guys. And all of our starting linebackers have at least two years of eligibility remaining (Ezeh, Mouton, and whoever else). Okay, I think that's enough for now.

We're losing at least three RB's (Brown, Minor, Grady) after this year. We currently have somewhere around 8 offers out. We'll probably take 3 or 4 if we can get them. If we get to three - which will take a long time if it happens - we might take another guy only if he has some position flexibility or if he's Lache Seastrunk. "Too many of them" won't commit. Just like when OSU started pulling offers off the table when they got too full of DB's this past year, we'll start to pull offers. Or we'll just stop recruit a guy we don't want anymore, a la Jordan Barnes.
