Today’s MSU outrage Apparently Engler has attempted to bypass the victims attorneys

And negotiate settlements with victims himself. Un-fucking-believable. Where are the guys that were kissing Robert Youngs ass earlier this week? Wouldn’t it be part of his job description to tell Engler he can’t bypass attorneys and offer financial settlements directly to victims? Can Engler get disbarred for this bullshit? https://www.detroitnews.com/story/news/local/michigan/2018/04/13/nassar…

I think this one is from episode 48. He had just received news that he lost yet another Ensign. The 48th to pass since he took over as captain. This time Ensign Roger Donovan of the USS Hathaway, a former member of the enterprise crew, had passed away while exploring a nebula as a part of an away team. He was the only member of the highly decorated crew that didn’t return to the ship.

To use a sports metaphor, Engler's tenure is beginning to remind me of the Mike Haywood hire at Pitt. He never coached a game and was fired within about 30 days of taking the job.

Engler has done literally nothing correct yet. He's been the MSU President for about 90 days and every action he takes makes the school look worse. It's time for MSU to take themselves seriously and hire a real university president.

My favorite quote was this gem that completely and efficiently summarizes exactly what’s wrong at MSU:

Engler, she said, replied that MSU and Nassar's victims couldn't work together until the civil suits, filed by more than 250 women, were settled

There you have the entire problem. Unless MSU can escape liability, they have zero interest in meaningful reforms or changes to their toxic culture.

of epic proportion. I can't think of a bigger moron in this moment. The majority of us thought this was a stupid move based on Engler's past on dealing with sexual harrassment or assault, or not dealing with it. I'm now convinced that members of the blog could run MSU better than they can.

I thought at the time that he was a credible choice.  Alum, competent, executive experience - some of the things I pointed out in my post here on 30-January-2018.

Unfortunately, he is reverting back to showing one of his big negative traits.  He had a habit of acting like a bully when he was Governor, and he's acting the same way again.

So I was wrong when I made that post back 2.5 months ago.  The last thing MSU needs now is a President who is acting like a bully.  But that's where we are.  I thought he could, but the old dog is showing incapable of changing his temperament.

Longer-term, a number of the MSU Board members MUST get voted out as soon as possible.  That's on the voters of the state of Michigan.

As President, he’s presumably the point man with general counsel - he should be helping craft an ethical and moral legal strategy, with at least some focus on the well-being of students and the long-term reputation of Michigan State, instead of this reflexive short-term effort to just shut this crisis down. He’s not running a private corporation which only concerns itself with profit.

There was a chance to come out of this looking as good as a rape-enabling school possibly could. They’ve somehow managed to make themselves look worse.

This guy is the exact opposite of Winston Wolf. If Engler were in Pulp Fiction, he would have told Vincent and Jules to smear Marvin's blood all over their faces, murder Jimmie and Bonnie, then dispose of the bodies on the steps of the local police station.

And that he thinks his first priority is to make sure MSU limits its monetary losses & makes the problem go away, as opposed to overhauling the culture, properly taking care of the victims along with current & future students?

I would have never have guessed this.

I am shocked.

Gotta be better than Engler. He's an academic who seems to hire capable people under him. He likes some UM basketball, hasn't put me to sleep at numerous commencements, and has some mild student protests over his/regents policies as is to be expected. Huzzah!

The way I see it, private (or attempted private) hush money is self-incrimination. The fact that Engler is trying to circumvent the justice system just makes this all the worse. I sincerely hope for every victim's sake that the courts see right through all of this literal shit and disembowel the MSU board and every coach, staff member, counselor, etc that was connected with this mess. Nothing makes me angrier than telling a victim that they don't deserve a voice.

Tells me you aren’t a lawyer. Of course Engler and MSU continually fuck things up, but most to all of settlement negotiations are money for silence/loss of rights to bring suit. Engler should have known better than to meet an unsophisticated plaintiff without counsel present, but the fact that MSU wants to settle doesn’t ensure culpability at all. There’s a reason over 95% of cases never see a court room, it’s a lot cheaper and more certain to buy someone off than go through a trial. Evidence of settlement negotiations cannot be used at trial, so there is no downside for a defendant to offer money.

Having said all that, fuck MSU.

And repercussions come? The longer this drags out the more stupid people think this was just a dream.
