Tim Hardaway Jr. gets into the Atlanta Hawks rotation

Submitted by Gil From Omaha on

"Three weeks ago, Tim Hardaway Jr. was on assignment in the NBA Development League.

Now, he has earned his way into the Hawks’ regular rotation with his eighth straight appearance in Wednesday’s 104-98 win over the Trail Blazers."

Good for Tim. Hope he does well and keeps his spot.

Both were wildly inconsistent, but Hardaway's junior year was so underrated. For the life of people, I can't figure out why people don't appreciate it like they should.

His freshman year he was a key contributor that no one expected.

His sophomore year he had all the summer hype and couldn't handle being the alpha on the team. His shot selection was almost Kobe/October '15 bad. And he couldn't make anything all year.

However, his junior year after Burke moved into the primary role. He flurished, IMO. He became comfortable in his own skin. He went from a wanna be superstar to a "do everything player." His defense could not have been worse his sophomore year. There were times where he just wouldn't even TRY to guard people. Fast forward to his junior year and he was our best perimeter defender.

When teams learned that if you double Burke and get the ball out of his hands we couldn't start our offense --- Hardaway stepped into a PG role and Burke played off the ball. By the time the VCU tournament game roled around and they were trapping Burke in the backcourt, THJ was running the offense for us.

He was never elite, but I'll be damned if he wasn't the glue for that Championship Game team. The guy did it all. Kind of a jack of all trades, master of none kind of guy. Which was perfect when you had the master hustler (McGary), the master interior defender/charge/tough guy (Morgan), and the master 3-point sniper (Stauskas)...those guys all had deficiencies Hardaway could cover up.

To me, Irvin is just an inconsistent player and doesn't impact the game enough when he's not scoring. Then again, he's playing out of position most of the time, so that's hard...just like it was hard for GRIII.

Mostly agree but what, in my opinion, many think was frustrating about him was inconsistancy i.e. his wild fluctuations in offensive effciency on pretty high volume.  One night he'd go 1/9 from three and another he'd go 7/8.  His off nights, with some exceptions, seemed to always be in important games.

that you haven't seen a developed / fully healthy Irvin on the floor at the same time as a healthy LeVert.  Irvin really came on at the end of last year when LeVert was hurt.  He is finally playing as well as he was then again this season... again LeVert is hurt.

I think that if you put them both out on the floor together when they are fully funtioning that Irvin will be very tough to guard.  I think he will become a more complete player (assists, rebounding, defense) when he has a LeVert taking the majority of the usage the same way Burke did with Hardaway.

I hope he sticks in the rotation. Coach B's players haven't been great in the NBA, but it's such a superior brand of BBall that many college standouts have a hard time at first. Can't have any big holes in your game in the NBA, so hopefully Tim has worked on his defense, amongst other things.

I really feel like a lot of people here don't really watch or understand the modern NBA.  ALL the good teams play good defense and the skill level and athletism of the players has never been higher.

JB's NBA products all have holes in their games.  Burke, Stauskas, THJ, GR3 all are liabilities on the defensive end.  If you think Popovich has room on his roster for one of those dudes you're nuts.  McGary he could probably turn into an all star.

He's a very talented player. Looks good on a highlight reel with high flying jams and silky smooth jumper from deep, also his driving ability has gotten much better than when he was at Michigan. If he can just find some consistency and awareness on defense he'll have a long career in the NBA. I'm rooting for him!
