Thursday Night Drinking, Football, Commitmas, and Northern Lights Thread

Submitted by xtramelanin on December 22nd, 2016 at 5:52 PM

Mates,

I won't be imbibing for a while tonight, but you've got college and pro football tonight, along with a hoped for Commitmas present at 7.   In addition, for those of us under clear skies this evening there has been a huge solar storm that should be hitting our atmosphere the next few nights.  That means northern lights, which if you've never seen them they are stupendous.  I recommend you get to a place without too much light pollution tonight and look to the sky.  You won't regret it.

Blessings to you all this Christmas and Holiday season.   Drink and Commit (to Michigan) responsibly.

EDIT:  Jordan Anthony made the jump to blue.   MBB standout David DeJulius also made the jump so Commitmas was even better than hoped for this evening.

Drinking, Commitmas?  Here's a positive thread.  Enough about Grant Perry, weirdo's tweeting recruits moms, etc, etc, etc.

I'm starting with a domestic while I cook tonights dinner.  Pizza, btw.

Go Blue and beat Furman!

Jealous of those on the board that are far enough North to see those.  I've had the privilege a few times of seeing good displays of the Aurora Borealis, and it is a wondrous thing.

If you've not seen it, you owe it to yourself to drag yourself out into the night and take it in.

Hopsecutioner at the airport. Heading up to the hellhole of all hellholes, Columbus, to spend Christmas with the fiancée's family.

A Jordan Anthony commitment would make me feel better.

Xtra.

Kids (including the MGoJunior) are home, prime rib and turkey are ready to go (Christmas Eve, on the Weber Kettle over lump charcoal; Christmas Day rotisseried on same kettle over more charcoal and applewood, respectively). Glenlivet ready to go tonight

Here in CO it's probably a bit too far south for the Lights, so we'll have to live vicariously through you far-northerners. Enjoy.

Last working day of the week for me. Going to relax/celebrate with a few fingers of Johnnie Walker Blue while watching the game and (hopefully) read a new Hello post tonight.

Merry X-Mas everyone

I bought one of those Irobot Roomba vacuum cleaner things about a month ago.  I like it but it hasn't really saved me that much time so far.  I end up just watching it.

Went from Lumber Barons to Tri City Brewery in Bay City. Had to pick up a couple growlers of the beer I brewed at Lumber Barons, and wanted to check out the new taproom at Tri City. Having a gin barrel aged ESB currently and it's RIGHTEOUS.

Sipping on some Jack Daniels Single Barrel Rye I got from the folks at the office. Good stuff. I taste some fruitiness and maybe a touch of vanilla. Im a bourbon guy and this is my first rye. I like it.

Have some clouds here, doubt Id see the Northern lights anyway in Brighton. My undergrad was at Tech so I have been witness to some cool displays in the past.

Hey Jordan you cant go wrong with Michigan as your choice. Cmon down.

Feeling good. My middle son just got home to mid-Michigan after a drive from Madison, Wisconsin where he goes to school. Beer awaits him in the fridge. I'll have some red wine tonight.

We rarely see anything even resembling the northern lights here in Wayne County sadly. Indeed, we're close enough to Detroit Metro and there is sufficient light pollution that anything glowing in the sky would probably generate more suspicion than anything. At least I have photos which I took up north many years ago of the actual northern lights, unimpeded by clouds (it is also cloudy here) and the odd Delta A320.

All the same, sports and wine. I am good to go.

Any chance folks up north or anywhere away from the city can take a couple pics of the sky over the next few nights and post to this thread? I'd like to see what I'm missing out on.

Just got back from the movies.  Took the daughter to see Sing, and had a Sam Adams Winter Lager at the theater.  My favorites are stouts, and my bestie gave me a couple I haven't had yet:  Mikkeller Breakfast Stout and Prarie Bomb.  Going to be a good night.

XtraMelanin, I know you are a Yooper. How many times per winter would you say these "good times for viewing the lights" occur? I've been hoping to see them ever since moving up there, so I'm salty I'm back in Detroit for the holidays.

right now they are 'on' because of the solar storm and clear skies.  there is no predicting that pattern.  the moon rose this morning so they are washed out of color right now.  i generally have seen them more in fall and winter but i think that is a product of there naturally being more darkness those times of the year.

the first time i ever brought by socal mgowife to the UP about 20 yrs ago we flew in close to midnight and i thought the northern lights were up but couldn't be certain as they were just starting up.  we rented a car at the airport and drove to shore of lake superior and it was a fine display.  my wife hadn't even heard of them before we landed but was treated to a show the first evening ever up there.
