Things Sparty says...

Submitted by briandtw on

Living in Las Vegas, I often will hang out at the MSU alumni bar with friends and watch the Spartans play if they're playing earlier than Michigan.  Most of the people there (other than my friends) don't realize I'm a Michigan fan and therefore feel free to say typically stupid stuff that I assume most Spartan fans think like:

"Michigan State should have a recruiting advantage over Michigan because our women are hotter."

"Hiring Rodriguez was a horrible mistake.  The spread offense wil never work in the Big Ten."

"Once Dantonio has a couple more years to bring in his guys, State will be beating Michigan every year."

The bar also plays some "parody" songs like "F--k the Wolverines" and some others that I don't honestly recall.  I pointed out to my friends that it doesn't really help advance the cause that they're not obsessed with Michigan.

Maybe if you can make fun of No. 23 Michigan State enough, it'll distract you from being 2-3, unranked, and looking ahead to your first Big Ten road game against the No. 6 team in the country.

I've never been to a dedicated MSU bar, but I lived in East Lansing for several years and it's pretty much how you described.  Far more focused on us losing than on MSU doing well.  I was watching at Buffalo Wild Wings one Saturday where both games were going on at the same time.  The MSU game finished up with them winning and there were a few scattered cheers and shouts of "Go Green!".  The Michigan game finished up a few minutes later with us losing and the place absolutely exploded.  I've watched a lot of sports there, both college and professional, and the only time that came close to that level of excitment was Maglio Ordonez's walk off homer to send the Tigers to the 2006 World Series.  Seeing Michigan lose seems better to them than winning a national championship

Look, I'm a Michigan Grad. I am not from the State, so I have no affiliation (friends that went there, etc.) with MSU at all.

If you can't see the irony in constantly bagging on their team, and then deriding them as "obsessed" with Michigan, then you're an idiot.
