Tapdancing Crist: ND names starter
Brian Kelly announced that Dayne Crist will be starting at QB over Tommy Rees. Not wholly unexpected, but interesting nonetheless...
EDIT: Stats for those who are curious:
Crist : 174 of 294 (59%), 2033 yards (6.91 YPA) 15 TD / 7 INT.
Rees 100 of 164 (61%), 1106 yards (6.74 YPA) 12 TD / 8 INT.

Are you trying to say Jesus Christ can't hit a curveball?

I really wanted to post a clip of that with my previous reply but the only one I could find on YouTube had horrible audio.

nd's athletic training staff (which has since been replaced) didn't diagnose him with a concussion...a conclusion they held to in the weeks after the game. given the numerous differing descriptions of the event i think its hard to know what happened unless you happen to be dayne crist (or maybe his doctor)...

Yeah, but when you take a shot to the head and your vision becomes blurry, that's concussion-like symptoms. Whether it was really a concussion or not, with symptoms like that he probably shouldn't have been allowed to come back in, just to play it safe.

if a player develops a headache shoudl they sit for the rest of the game? dizziness? fatigue? they're all "concussion symptoms," but the diagnosis of a concussion requires a bit more than the presence of a single symptom.
the diagnosis of concussion is a tricky business. some cases are flamingly obviously, but a significant chunk aren't obvious at all. particularly when there isn't an obvious hit that the symptoms are linked to — crist finished the drive, after all.
moreover, what of crist's behavior? his family's? they're bright folks. if they thought he was concussed and put back into the game, don't you think they might have been a wee bit pissed?
i think its very hard to make the case that kelly's behavior was egregiously wrong on this one. if his medical staff genuinely told him crist wasn't concussed and was safe to go back in the game, is kelly supposed to disagree? of course not. one can hypothesize that the training staff was coerced or ignored or whatever, but i don't think there is any evidence to that effect. so, kelly may or may not be an evil bastard, but given what we know this episode isn't an illustration one way or the other.

But imagine that conversation with the trainer.
- Trainer: "coach, it seems that he was hit so hard in the head that one of his senses stopped working."
- Kelly: "but it's back, right?"
- Trainer: "kinda"
- Kelly: "Good enough."

the diagnosis is sufficiently vague that its incredibly easy for coaches to potentially pressure trainers to "clear" guys. that may have happened here. although, kelly would have to be uniquely insensitive (and short-sided) to play a concussed player in this day and age. its plausible that kelly is a jerk, but it seems less likely that he's an idiot.
my point is that we have no earthly idea what happened to dane crist's brain. we also have no idea what nd's training staff truly thought happened to dane crist's brain. its at least possible they genuinely didn't think the man was concussed and it simiarly possible that he wasn't concussed. i find this to be a particularly weak piece of evidence thrown around by the "kelly will do anything to win" crowd.

Ultimately its not up to the coach if the medical staff don't clear him.

This is one of the reasons they use to hate Kelly, don't try to take that away from them, my board enjoyment would decrease

Crist is the better qb so I'm not surprised at all.

I do think michigan caught a break of sorts with him being out for a time in the game last year. the thing that drives me crazy about ND fans talking about it is the way they act like it was a pure stroke of bad luck, as if crist slipped on a banana peel on the sidelines. he was injured because kovacs ear holed him and put him out of the game. so in this case michigan didn't exactly get a lucky break they created their own break with a good hit.

The name is misleading; I'm no longer in South Bend. I'm a phony. A big fat phony.
Wait a minute, are you Charlie Weis?

We shut down Tommy Reese last year.

Congrats on that.
