Talking DL

Submitted by gobluedave on

First off, I'm super excited about our DL next year.  Who do you think starts?  Does Gary start?  There will be an awesome competition between him and Taco this fall. Regardless of who starts there's going to be a great rotaion.  But one concern of mine is Mone & Hurst going pro early, leaving us with not a whole lot in 17 but anyway back to next year....

1st team: Wormley, Glasgow, Hurst, Gary

2nd team: Taco, Mone, Godin, Marshall

3rd team: Johnson, Pallante, Dwumfour, Kemp

He was listed as an OR starter for much of the year alongside Henry or Wormley.  These are NFL players likely to go in the the Top 3 rounds of the draft (frankly I'd be surprised if Wormley doesn't end up in the first round in 2017), and Godin was performing near their level until he got hurt.

The rotation will only go 6 deep if they don't have a 4th DLmen.  If they end up with Charlton at WDE (far from a given) there will likely be a smaller player backing him up for pass-rushing situations.

In other words, even if they hadn't landed Gary there is need for a DLmen to emerge.

Really, you think Godin is on the same level as Wormley?  I didn't see that at all watching games.  Godin looked servicable, Wormely looked dominant at times.

No, he has potential and size, but hasn't put that into results yet.  In all fairness he's only played his true freshman year.  How many guys make an immediate big impact on the d-line as a true freshman?  Henry was our best lineman and Glasgow and Wormley were 2A and 2B IMO.

I doubt Taco and Gary will play the same position, at least not on a regular basis. Gary will probably push Hurst for a starting position or rotate in with Wormley and Hurst. And yes we might be very thin in 2017 which is why I really wanted a 3rd DT. need to make it a priority again this year.

I agree over the next couple of years, he could land at the nose (though with our OL depth, I don't know which way I'd prefer him going).  But I believe next year, any DL play would be in very short yardage situations on 3rd/4th down or goal line stances only.  Don't think they'll play him at nose on earlier downs.

But with our current depth (or lack there of) at OL, I'd bet Drevno takes all the time he can to mold him into a great lineman. Probably not enough time to really develop on the defensive side. Also our D line is deep even without Henry next year. This is a depth issue and I think Onwenu is more polished on offense right now.

Read this as a guess to who would be on the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd (does that exist?) team All-American (or B10). Either way, it's probably right - this DL will be downright nasty next year.

I don't think Gary starts, but I do think he is first off the bench at WDE and 3Tech and can probably used to spell at SDE at some point as well.

SDE: Wormley, Godin, Gary

3T: Hurst, Gary

NT: Glasgow, Mone

WDE: Taco, Gary

Kemp is said to be playing strictly MIKE right now. We have no idea what Marshall's status is - he has been in the Harbaugh Dog House and in limited snaps against Florida looked awful. Hopefully he or Johnson become a viable #2 on the backside, or Godin becomes a solid option inside at 3T to spell Hurst. We will have a good rotation again this year, but without Henry, Gary will be asked to learn more than one position on the line and I think that (and just not being in a college strength program for as long as the others) will keep him from starting outright.

Given Doc Brown's MO, I'm not sure it matters. Everyone will play everywhere. Hell, it wouldn't surprise me if some DL guys end up getting a lot of snaps as a jumbo LB.
