Talking Basketball Saturday (and your beverage of choice)

Mates,

So lets talk some hoops.  First, very nice win today, a number of Mgobloggers in attendance, had to be fun.   Second, how could you not pull for Rutgers.  Saw the highlight of that last second shot.  Poor Rutgers, indeed.   And just checked the box score, looks like Kentucky is murderizing Tennessee by 20 points.  Would like to see that hold up, too.

Now for Michigan.  We've got 5 games left in the regular season:

@ Minny 2/21

Home against sparty and Nebraska, 2/24, 2/28, respectively.

@ Maryland on 3/3

@ sparty 3/9.

So what's our record in these last 5 games?  Even a pessimist would give the nod to at least 2 and probably 3 victories.  Do we do better than that?

And what is in your cup this evening?  Coffee, water, or something more?

Hope you are having an enjoyable holiday (for some) weekend.  Did any of you go see Scanner Blue sing with that great ensemble?  Would be awesome, I'm sure.

If I'm Fran McCaffrey the first thing I did after the game is purchase PowerBall tickets for tonight's drawing.  Just unreal.

Had a nice nip of Templeton rye with an ice cube and a splash of La Croix.

We battle thru, 4-1, maybe them all.  It will be frustrating at times, but we do it.

Jackie O’s Mystic Mama IPA, an All Day IPA on deck.

Great win today.  Also, fuck those refs from the Penn State game.  Still salty.  We played bad, still was bull shit.

I’m with you on the refs. Yes, we played poorly the game, but some of that could actually be because of the poor officiating. I coach basketball, and I can’t tell you how many times over the years my teams have lost games because of bad play, but where that play fed off of bad officiating. A poorly officiated game can throw an offense of player out of his tempo, and cause defenses to play tentatively to avoid fouls. Whereas in Football, bad officiating could impact the game one play at a time, and you can really discern the impact, in basketball, it’s more of an overall game impact. Can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen it as a coach, and it is frustrating as hell (which is why JB probably got tossed).

Agreed, and I'm not saying that refs completely determined the outcome of the game and not saying the outcome would've changed, but if the refs had gotten the Simpson illegal screen call correct and Beilein was never thrown out, that's a 5 point swing. Our smallest deficit in the second half was 4, meaning we would've had a lead at the end of the game

Minnesota kind of scares me. Their offense is basically wildly throwing themselves at the hoop and committing loads of offensive fouls that don't get called. There's also the home cooking issue, and Minnesota as gotten it against us real bad before.

Michigan did, however, just soundly beat a team that is far superior to the Gophers. I think we survive this one and go 4-1/3-2 over this stretch. Hopefully the offense starts coming along. We saw the potential this team can play to in the non-conference stretch.

Who is doing the on court interviews for this NBA all-star Saturday Night?

Most definitely easy on the eyes. And no, I’m not talking about Shaq.

Purdue has one tough game left at Minny.  Five against The Professor and Mary Ann.

We have four tough games left and one against The Professor and Mary Ann.

It would have been a huge help for Mary Ann to have added Purdue as another notch on her lipstick case (in addition to Michigan).

We may have to win out to tie Purdue for the B1G regular season title.  It's the B1G and you never know, but Purdue is favored in all of its remaining games by the ESPN matchup predictor.

I checked ESPN near halftime and PSU was down only a point 31-30.  I checked again early in the second half and Purdue had built a comfortable lead in short order. It seems like they cruised the rest of the way.

This last stretch is going to be brutal.

Minnesota at the Barn is never easy. They play physical basketball and will get a lot of calls. We barely beat them in Crisler. I am preparing for a loss.

Sparty at home. This is a toss up. They are talented and so are we. They have been waiting to play us again after losing the last three. This is a must win for us.

Nebraska at home should be a win.

Maryland on the road is a toss up. We’ve not played well on the road so even if we are the better team, you can’t count on us winning.

Sparty on the road. I’m never optimistic about playing in Breslin. We are capable of winning but I’m not counting on it. The 2012-13 NC team went there and lost by 20+.

Overall I can see us going anywhere from 2-3 to 4-1. This team needs to learn to play well on the road ASAP.

Didn’t catch any of the game today. Been at the funeral home all day.

Shooting Jameson like it’s water is the drink of the night.

Go blue! Keep it rolling!

Not drinking tonight.

But I'm going to need something tomorrow after watching my daughter's volleyball team at a President's Day tournament.

They're so bad, they've got to be tanking for a high draft pick.

water and watching x-files on amazon.  some indica too.

puppy is keeping me busy.  Merlin got his 8 weeks shots today and gained a 1.5 pounds in a week.

think all the games are winnable even without home court advantage.

probably end up going 3-2 splitting with sparty and a tight loss at maryland.

1. We've been practicing this off and on since September and get to perform it once. 2. The piece was written over 50 years ago but this is the first performance by UMS so it's likely I'll never sing it again. 3. The poetry of Wilfred Owen got to me,"Oh, Death was never enemy of ours! We laughed at him, we leagued with him, old chum. No soldier's paid to kick against his powers...He wars on Death--for life: not men--for flags." He died a week before the armistice to end WW1. So ...a tear or two was shed during the applause.

3-2, finishing at 15-5 and 26-5.  We should beat the Huskers at home.  We likely split at MN and at MD, and likely split the two Sparty games.  If we can somehow do one game better than that and finish at 16-4, we should at least tie for the regular season BIG title.  I think Purdue will trip up somewhere.

of course sparty gets rutgers at home than 3 days off before they play us.  we go on the road to minny with only two days off before sparty.  not a huge deal but a definite advantage.  sparty can basically spend 4-5 days preparing for us leading up to the game.

Had Bells Cherry Stout followed by a Keewenaw Dark IPA.

I'll go 4-1 because I'm an optimist.  I think we drop a game at sparty, but I think that's our best matchup if teske is out of foul trouble.
