Tailgating/Parking Suggestions

Submitted by HenneGivenSunday on

I know this topic was lightly touched upon a day or two ago, but it was Ann Arbor Pioneer specific (with limited responses) and I wondered what people thought about specific tailgating locations.  This will be my first year as a season ticket holder, and I've always parked on the golf course.  The golf course is fine unless the weather is bad, but it can get a little tedious (cost, # of vehicles).  I've been checking out www.parknparty.com and I see there's a site at 2100 S. Main that looks promising.  Anyone ever use this location?  Any other suggestions?  It sounds like there will be quite a few new season ticket holders this year that could benefit from such wisdom.

The golf course can be expensive. However, we buy the season pass and we get in no matter what the weather is like. I appreciate the grass, trees, proximity to the stadium, and atmosphere. Nothing like tailgating on gameday. As for the location you mentioned I don''t have information for you on that. Enjoy your season tickets!

With a season pass at AAGO you get in 30 minutes earlier and you can have a designated spot to go to. You can also bring guest cars with you once you have submitted your group application for the season. Guests still pay, but they get to park with you. We have random guests throughout the year that can't come to every game. That feature works out well for our large group.

How do you go about  getting a season pass? My friends and I want to set up a tailgate there this year -- I imagine it's sightly cheaper to get the season pass than it is to get individual games like we did last year.

I ended up going with a reserved spot at Pioneer/ I know there is a big debate about grass vs asphalt but in the end would like to take weather out of play. I have a tent for any shade needs so that wasn't a huge deal. I don't mind having more people around as I think it adds to the atmosphere. I had parked at the GC in the past and enjoyed it. Ultimately having a reserved spot tipped Pioneer over the edge for me. I'm hoping with HARBAUGH and sell outs parking will be at a premium again and this strategy will pay off.

I park at a parking ramp downtown and walk to tailgates around the stadium. I've tailgated on the roof of the parking structure before but I'm pretty sure you're not supposed to. It's a bit of a walk to the stadium but it's worth it after the game because you don't have much traffic to go through.

I used to park in the neighborhood north of Stadium and west of Main.  But since my son has been going to UM, I've parked near his house at State and Packard.  Since I am cheap and ornery, I've grown to dislike high priced parking and ungoldy traffic after the game.  It seems I've been able to better avoid those two things parking over on the east side.

The golf courses are more festive but parking there comes with a price (literally and figuratively).

Depending what time you get to A2, you could actually find free parking on the streets of the neighborhood adjacent to Pioneer to the west.

This is true if you go to Pauline, but all the people who own houses (up to 4-5 blocks west of main off stadium) start parking all their cars on the street as early as Wednesday.  I know because I live there.  Friday at 3pm there are no street spots to be found almost all game weeks.  If you hit Pauline west of 7th though - the parking there is open until MAYBE saturday super early.

There are some really nice parks not far from the stadium, where if you get there early enough, can park next to or near.  Then, there's plenty of grassy areas, and trees to have a nice tailgate.  No bathrooms in most cases, so that could be an issue if you're there a long time.  Examples are Greenview Park between Seventh & Greenview, and north of Scio Church, and Allmendinger Park next to Pauline.

I park people 2 blocks from the stadium in my yard.  More than willing to work out a deal for the season that would be under half the rate of parknparty.  Atmosphere is not as good as the golf course though, so there's that..... but you can walk across the street if you want it.  If you're interested in hearing more just let me know.

I'm in year 3 of my once a year tailgate (I have young kids, so hard to do every game) and I think I have it figured out, and plan to expand hopefully.  I really love the golf course.  It is very unique atmosphere from other tailgates, and it's great for my kids to run around.  We haven't been going to the games, so leaving is usually easy.

From what people are saying, I think the private course is the way to go if you have season tickets and plan to go tailgate every game.  There have been some great help over the last two years for tailgate suggestions by mgoblog users to help me plan two successful tailgates, so thanks to those who helped me and other noobs.

for the season ?   WTF.   I park at one of the University Lots (across the street from the MMB practice field on Elbel - off Hill).  I think I paid something like $35 per game.  Asphault, no mud, real bathrooms at Elbel (or porta johns in the lot) and about a 7 minute walk to Michigan Stadium.  If you have kids they can go over to the practice field and throw the football around on a full size artificial turf field (even has the M at the 50 yard line)

Traffic is everywhere ... so there's no avoiding it.   Good time to re-heat the tailgate leftovers !!!

I'm traveling to Ann Arbor in September for the Air Force game as a surprise birthday trip for my boyfriend so he can see his favorite team in action at the Big House. We aren't renting a car but I planned on having us tailgate that morning. Are there any lots or parties that are recommended? Even starting at a couple of bars would be great. Looking for some input as it's my first time in Ann Arbor, and I'm not familiar with the city. Thanks!
