T-Giving NCAAFB Texas @ A&M Open Thread

Submitted by formerlyanonymous on
Not sure the population around the board tonight, but I'll be celebrating my family leaving me alone by watching Texas @ Texas A&M. A&M is wildly inconsistent this season, but has shown stretches of being really good on offense, and meh at best on defense. The Aggies are currently #6 in total offensive yards. They do have the nation's sack leader in Von Miller (15 on the year). I'd love to see an upset here, but I can't see it happening, even with the 12th man at Kyle Field. Be prepared for stories about the Aggie Bonfire as it's been 10 years since the tragedy. As someone who was around College Station for on a few years before the tragedy, I don't think it's worth the risk or money sunk into having the tradition start back up. Spread is Texas -20.5 or -21 and the O/U is around 63 or 63.5. I like the over, and I'm leaning toward Texas A&M covering (not so confident in that).

Man, I saw that coverage and wondered what the hell Texas was doing. Corner was way inside, safety was blitzing, easy read to run up the sideline. Easy pass and catch for a TD. A&M up 7-0 real quick.

I would love to see A&M win this game. It would completely screw up the BCS - who would wouldn't love to see that. If A&M wins, you're likely going to see either a Florida/Alabama rematch for the NC, or you'll see the winner play either TCU, Boise St., or Cincy. No one would want to see a rematch, but it would be hard to put any of those undefeated teams ahead of either FL or ALA, even with one loss. Hopefully, it would be a step toward getting rid of the BCS.

Honestly, I don't think it's that hard to put them behind any of the undefeated. Florida has beaten 1 ranked team in LSU. That's not such a strong win. If they were to lose, no way there is a rematch. If Alabama loses, they have 3 wins to the top 25, TCU has the same number of wins, and more impressive margins of victory. Cincy has one less win against a ranked opponent, but they could conceivably beat a top 10 team to close out the season.

Let's say FL beats Bama (FL will be a favorite). Maybe people would put TCU ahead of Bama, but it's a close call. Bama big three wins are VT, LSU, and Miss. TCU's are Utah, BYU, and Clemson. Bama's three wins are more impressive, though maybe not by a lot. The rest of the schedule is not even comparable. TCU's schedule is laden with cupcakes, while Bama beat Tennessee, Arkansas, South Carolina, and (assuming they do it) Auburn. Maybe that strength of schedule isn't enough to put a one loss team over an undefeated, but I think it's a close call.

the commentator indicated a few moments ago that the Texas offensive line had 123 starts between them. I wonder the total starts of the M line this past season and potentially in the upcoming season. Perhaps I will investigate...

and I must disagree with you. I think Clemson and BYU could beat Va. Tech, LSU, and Miss. The rest of the schedule doesn't mean much to me, because TCU has pantsed everyone else they've played. So I think TCU would deserve a shot at the title, and I think they could compete with Florida, because they play excellent team football in big games, which is the one thing that can overcome talent deficiences.* *- But I don't think they're hurting for talent though, are they?

Yeah - you and FA have good points. I just bet my dad $5 to $100 that we'd see a Bama/FL rematch in the NC. (Not that I'd want to see that, but I think it's better than a 20-1 possibility.) One thing that could make it more arguable, as well, is if FL/Bama was a well-played, close game. If you think about it, the situation would be similar to the Michigan or FL controversy in 2006, when the BCS chose a one loss FL over a one loss UM (though UM's resume was more impressive) to play OSU (thus avoiding the rematch).

When's the last time Texas and TAMU were national powers at the same time? You'd think the state of Texas would be big enough to support two top-notch programs, but for the last 20 years or so it's always been one up, one (relatively) down.

This A&M secondary is scary bad... I would hate to be an Aggie fan knowing that every third and long was going to be converted
