I wouldn't do that for the State game.  That's the kind of thing you only do for your biggest rival.  So, I guess from HIS perspective, I understand the decision.

This game will be agonizing. So much so that I am embracing other plans this Saturday so that I'll be distracted from having to watch all of it. Seriously, the last two years we lost to State (particularly last year's game) were such agony that I just want this game to be over with. I really fear what they'll do to our defense. I don't think I can watch until I know everything is okay, the universe is as it should be, and Michigan won.

my freshmen year.  I had surgery to repair torn cartilage in my left knee.  The operation ended up being the Friday before the MSU game.  I didn't recognize this when it was scheduled.  When I did realize it, I was naive enough to think that I would be still be able to hobble over to the game.  Not even close.....

To rub salt into the wounds, that same Saturday morning, student season basketball tickets went on sale.  This was 1992, the Fab Five's sophomore year.  So I missed out on buying tickets and I didn't realize until after the fact that I could have given my student ID to a friend to pick up the tickets.

OK.... so torn knee cartilage isn't exactly the same as heart complications, but had I been a little more with the program, I would have rescheduled.

My mom's best friend's dad was an all american football player at OSU.  We got tickets to the 1997 Michigan-OSU game thrugh him in he OSU section (great place for a 10 year old wearing Maize and Blue).  He was watching at home and at the conclusion of the game, he had a heart attack and died.

What gets me is the surgery is on Thursday. He's putting it off because he's afraid he might be dead by Saturday if he goes in for surgery on Thursday. The logic of this blows my mind.

Sounds like he is getting an implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD), not just a pacemaker.  You don't get a simple pacemaker for a cardiomyopathy (weakness of the heart pumping muscle).  The procedure takes approximately 1.5 hours, and you stay the night and go home around 9am the next morning.  It isn't usually general anesthesia, so you don't get intubated, and wake up right after.  So, the guy should get his defibrillator.  If he has a cardiac arrest, he won't be able to see the game anyway, for obvious reasons.  In fact, having this 'minor surgical procedure' would ensure he DOES get to see the game.
