Sunday Morning (Coffee) Drinking Thread

Submitted by 901 P on

At this point we know about the Friday/Saturday night adult beverage preferences of the MGo crowd. I'm guessing some of the folks here are pretty obsessive about their morning beverages as well--especially how they make/drink their coffee. I'm no connossieur: I have a pretty basic drip coffee machine. I go with about a 50-50 mix of dark roast (usually Starbucks French roast or espresso) that I grind, combined with pre-ground coffee from the grocery store. Mostly this is a way to keep down costs, as I tend to drink quite a bit of coffee. I brew it relatively strong and take it with cream.

So before we purge the board of such mundane topics: what are you drinking this morning? (Other than the obvious: whole milk.) Coffee, tea, or a little something to help your hangover? French press? AeroPress? Keurig? Pour-over? Any particular type of beans? Or do you grab it from Starbucks or Dunkin Donuts or a local coffee shop? Black, cream, sugar? Any other additives?

MadCap third coast beans purchased on my last visit to GR, pulled luongo in Saeco Intellia automatic. I'll usually froth up a little milk to mix in for a velvety delicious morning.
Some mornings when I have more time I'll do a pour over in the Chemex.

So I plan on waiting until I get to work. I'll have an Americano or our cold brewed coffee to get me going. Cold brew coffees have triple the caffeine, so that might be the winner. After one or two of those, I might treat myself to a chai latte. Hashtag delicious.

yesterday and this morning (OTOH on work days, I just use the pre-ground Columbian Folgers or Maxwell House).  Yesterday I went for the whole-bean McCafe French Roast; today it's the Starbucks Whole Bean Sumatra, sweetened with a heaping spoonful of raw cane demerara sugar with a liberal dose of half-and-half.  Nothing fancy for brewing, just an automatic drip coffeemaker today (though some days I slow it down with a stove-top perculator on very low heat, just barely hot enough to make it perc).

I'm from West Michigan and a guy here started bottling and selling cold brew, so I'm enjoying a Prospectors Coffee Cold Brew. Nothing added. Good stuff. Look for it at Family Fare if you're on the west side.

Every weekday morning, I'm firing up the Keurig with Dunkin Donuts Chocolate Iced Donut coffe and some Italian Sweet Cream creamer.

On the weekends though, I usually avoid coffee and stick to water (or sometimes Coke, like today).

Espresso roast from Cafe Fortuna in Hinsdale (outside Chicago). Smoothest, most well balanced coffee I've ever had. They bring the beans up from their family's farm on the Mexico/Guatamala border and roast it here. Should use my French press for it, but too lazy on a Sunday morning. And, drinking it black. Always black.

Just need one cup in the AM or its ugly. Today was Dunkin Donuts dark blend (preground). I'm one of those people who likes their whitener and sugar with a dash of coffee. Trader Joes has the best soy creamer out there so I buy in bulk and use that. Splenda. I have a Keurig at work but really only use it in the winter. It's nice because I don't have to talk to anyone for hours since its in my office.

since I can't easily find my favorite brand, Chock Full o' Nuts, in Minnesota. Today it's Caribou medium roast and Yuban. A splash of hazelnut cream. Three cups of coffee and the Sunday NYT are one of the small weekly pleasures I will always cherish.

I'm watching 2011 Michigan/OSU on ESPN Classic - because I just need football.

But watching Denard play so free and happy almost brings a tear to my eye...that kid enjoyed playing football at Michigan more than anyone I've ever seen. It's pretty cool to watch...again.

West Coast checking in here. At the Philz headquarters drinking a large Ambrosia Coffee of God. As good as their coffee is, no one brews it like their baristas do in store.

Not sure what I was drinking this morning as we did breakfast at my parents. Probably a organic bean or something. Most mornings I just have a basic whole bean that I grind from Costco. I drink way too much coffee to spend the time or money on some of the processes describe above. I will say that I do respect those that do though. I have a local coffee shop in Toledo I go to (plate 21 for anyone from south Toledo) and they have a very respectable shop. Their pour overs are easily the best coffee I have ever had. Black coffee by the way.

If anyone is lucky enough to live within proximity of a fairway market, try the Hawaiian Rainforest Blend. Best coffee I have ever tasted (especially in a French press). It is about 75% less expensive than Kona and every bit as good.

I'm grinding some Philz for a drip brewer this morning, though I often go for the Kenya AA from Trader Joes. That stuff is surprisingly good. Pour over in the afternoon.
