Steelers claim Devin Gardner

Submitted by Real Tackles Wear 77 on

Seems a great fit. Strong franchise, Antwaan Randle-El became a star there after transitioning from B1G QB...go Devin!

Dude's got to report what his sources give him, and he's got to pump the tires of his employer's biggest money maker.

I'm sure personally Schefter is happy that Harbaugh is in AA, but professionally he had to spin the story he was given and the story ESPN wanted on the airwaves

But he was pushing that crap when Harbaugh was already on the ground at Metro.

Who in their right mind would have thought that JH would have flown all the way here, with his family, just to fuck us and take a job in the NFL?

Schefty knew what the actual story was. In one of his interviews, he even said he wanted Harbaugh at Ann Arbor citing his UM lineage etc.

He just had to report what he had in front of him via his NFL sources.

I'll cut him a break.

That is a question I've wrestled with myself. Those folks pissed me off to no end, but Adam is too plugged in to too many sources to have really believed that. I choose to believe he was just trying not to hurt UM's chances by saying too much too soon. That may just be my maize glasses though.

And speaking of Foote & Woodley, they're together again with the Cardinals.  Was disappointed to see Foote was cut, until I discovered Foote's been hired as an ass't coach (linebackers).  Still thinks he can play, and if he gets healthy and they need depth, he may try to get back on the roster.  But can't do both per NFL rules, and so far he seems to be really enjoying the coaching thing.

Maybe should be a separate post...

I was hoping he'd get claimed by Philly & they'd work him as an Chip Kelly QB.  Actually teach him to read a defense & he's behind Bradford on IR, Sanchize, & a fullback who thinks Jesus told him to QB?

Steelers is a good place though.  They know how to develop WR's too...

Was nervous for him at the Pats when I saw he still hadn't been given a roster number as of Sunday.  Had read a local column (possibly even on the Pats website) only a day or two before saying the Pats had enough WRs, knew he'd be a project, but couldn't count on bringing him back to the practice squad if they cut him.  They were right.  He was picked up immediately, by a team that isn't such a tease with Michigan players (see Gallon and Cam Gordon; three in two years).

But Randle El played WR his senior year in college and looked far better at it than we have ever seen Gardner look. Gardner appears to be a great person and I would love to see him succeed in the NFL, but he never looked good at WR and I suspect that is a large part of why the Patriots did not keep him on the 90 man roster after the initial practices.

Patriots had better options or were full up at WR.  Gardner needs to make a practice squad, needs a full year as that at WR.  Then we'll know if he can play.

He's got the physical tools and the work ethic.  That can take him a long way.  I agree in principle: the NFL is for the elite, even the worst receivers catch everything.  But if he can latch on this first year he can give it a go.  Even if he bombs out of the NFL, he can go CFL or other semi-pro league, learn to be a WR, and come back.  Football dream isn't over for that kid for at least a year or two.
