Stauskas has a nice game

Submitted by Flying Dutchman on

For all the talk of Nik being a potential bust in the NBA, it was nice to see him turn in a good game last night.    In a 4 point victory, he logged 24 minutes, shot very well from the field with a couple 3's, and scored 14.   I'm sure he could contribute more in terms of assists and boards, but this is still a nice night.     He's my favorite player of all time, passing Glen Rice and Jalen, and I hope this is the beginning of a breakthrough in his NBA career.

I really hope Stuaskas does well too, he was also one of my all-time favorites.  But how does he go 2-4 from the FT line (he was automatic in college) and play 24 minutes without grabbing a single rebound?  I think he has a future as a bench scorer but it would be nice to see him show a little more complete game.  If he's just going to be a markman, he needs to be draining them at a higher rate.

You don't root for recent players, who helped deliver a B1G championship and a long run in the NCAAs, to do well in the pros? If you don't care about Nik, in and of himself, wouldn't him doing well at least help recruiting?

Pair this with your "Fire Beilien" comment in the Howard game post, and you seem very down on UM basketball. Just 5 years ago, we hadn't won a B1G championship since 1986 and had almost zero people in the pros. Things could be better, but enjoy the progress. It's been significant.

I'm afraid it might be time to resign ourselves to the fact that Nik/Trey/Mitch/GR3 are never going to be studs in the league. Frankly
I'm just happy to see that THJ has found a situation where he can be very effective off the bench.

...except I thought Mitch would be an impact player and and was unsure about THJ. That's basically flipped, with Mitch out of the league (injuries and dope) and THJ a valued sixth-man on a playoff team. GRIII left too early and didn't have a standout skill, and Trey is too short and not athletic enough to be more than a quality backup.

I did think Nik could at least be 3-pt specialist with occasional drives to the basket (I had/have big defensive concerns), but the hasn't found the range yet. Hopefully he will.

Burke being the player he turned into doesn't surprise me; I thought the Pistons were smart for passing on him, and his game hasn't really evolved.  Stauskas had questions about his ability to get his shot off in the pros, and thus far it's been a mixed bag.  He's better than I expected with the ball in his hands, but he's not quick or big enough to get the seperation you need for his outside shot.  GRIII was always going to have issues being more than a bench guy in the NBA where almost everyone is an athlete on his level.  Mitch seems to be talented enough but has some, what's the term for smoking too much weed and getting caught, oh yeah "maturity issues", and also seems to have lost a step after his various back injuries.  I actually think Hardaway will have a solid career because he can get his own shot at times and seems to be buying into playing defense, which gives him more time on the court to score.

I recognize that the reasons any particular athlete is someone's favorite might include things having nothing to do with on-the-field achievement, but in terms of what they actually accomplished at Michigan, Nik pales in comparison to Rice or Jalen.

Stauskus was the BIG player of the year on a team that won the conference by 3 games, was a freshman starter on an NCAA finalist and showed out on an Elite 8 team the following year who lost in an all time classic. I will give you Rice, but Stauskus' accomplishments meet and likely exceed Jalen's. And Stauskus' wins actually, ya know, count. So there is that also.

let's not talk about comparisons Nik Stauskas to Glen Rice.  It was a favorite player comment - fine.  Loved me Nik too.  Glen Rice was on another planet compared to Nik.  His 184 points scored in the tourney during that 1989 NCAA Championship run may never be topped.  And in the NBA, he played 14 seasons and averaged over 18 points.  In the mid-90's, he was absolutely lethal from 3 point range.  Man, I loved watching him play in a Michigan uniform, releasing that quick 3 point jumper and draining it in the blink of an eye...

Question for you guys: if the entire group (Trey, Nik, Mitch, GR3, THJ) stays at least one more year, do you think any, or even all, would be significantly better in the league than they are now?

He's had a lot of good games, but they are offset by some awful ones. I think is weaknesses are exacerbated by being on an awful team. The funny thing is his athleticism has been a lot more impressive than his shooting. Yeah, anyone can look good on a personal highlight reel, but he's dunking on people here.
