Spring Outlook: Freshman Class

Submitted by BRBLUE on

Here is a nice video on the Early Enrolees. Looks like Canteen has a nice first step and Bryan Mone is going to be a beast in the middle!

I will say this about Derrick Green's weight:

If our offensive line could have opened up holes, we might not be talking about Derrick Green being 240 vs. 220. The fact is that he wasn't able to elude the guys who were unblocked, and that became a problem. Maybe playing at 220-225 will be good for him in the long run, but I don't necessarily disagree that he could have handled being 240 if holes opened up and he was wearing down filling safeties at that size. With the OL in the shape it is, we need a guy who's going to be able to outrun some people and make them miss. You can't expect any running back to bowl over 270 or 300 lb. linemen who are running free in the backfield.

His conditioning was the problem, not his weight.

A RB can be more than effective at 240, but EVERY RB not named Barry Sanders needs a hole to run though. We did not provide many of those last year.

A well conditioned 220 Green still isn't doing anything with last year's OL play.

I will say that it was encouraging to hear some passing references to the learning curve for Nussmeier's system and how it seems to be getting picked up relatively quickly. That should be a good thing for this offense definitely, especially the freshmen as they aren't necessarily having to relearn the offense.

Thanks for sharing this.

I think the general feel is actually below tempered enthusiasm. Despite my generally very optimistic mentality towards the team, I find myself skeptical, at best.

I see a good team with glaring weaknesses.  8-4 or w/e.  For those screaming we need to fire a coach for not winning the B1G title or beating OSU/MSU.  I'd love to shut both out and win the national title but OSU had won 20+ games straight and MSU was also a legit team last year.

As long as we beat the teams we beat and are competitive in all of the games I'm good.  I really hope we go nuts to send Gardner out smiling instead of grimacing or on crutches like last year.

I know they just picked the best plays from each guy for this video, but what they showed sure looked good. That Canteen route was dirty. The good kind. And yes, Mone looks absolutely enormous.

The things that were said about Freddy C when he committed. Hope he makes people eat their words. Kid looks like he can contribute significantly this year.

I think some were annoyed because he was kind of 3*/4* guy and we still thought we had a shot with Artavis Scott and KJ Williams - who in fairness did have significantly higher star power than Canteen did

For kicks, I went back to the Hello posts and there was just a little of this (whole lot of what is this ECA school, though) but overwhelmingly it was positive. The most interesting part was someone created an account (MayOhioEatTurds) which in 39 weeks has exactly ONE post. It's in that thread with the famous Foot Drill video and telling us Freddy was gonna be good. Not sure who this savant is, but I'm going to start looking for him.

Damn. Bryan Mone is one big dude. Looks like he might be working his way into the rotation this Fall.

Even though we only saw one clip of Green, he did look a little quicker. So he's got that going for him. Which is nice.

A couple of things that pop of the screen to me are. Freddy Canteen does not look like an eighteen year old and it looks like the rumors of his skilled route running aren't just hype. Mone is a man beast with the face a teenager. Derrick Green is going to be much improved as long as he doesn't gain twenty pounds by fall camp. Wilton has always looked like a great passer of the football to me and that pass is just more evidence of his bright future. Finally, Drake Harris looks to have skinnier legs that Roy Roundtree. I didn't think that was possible and would be suprised if we saw him play this year.

Fast!

Spring Hype is cool, I love to see flashes of brilliance from the guys just entering the program.  However temper that with a whole lotta development, physically, mentally, and dealing with situations, etc, etc, before we can depend on them.

Harris has a skinny build, but the guy can sky.  Amazing leaping ability, I hope he can keep that up as he builds strength.

And Mone, wow...thats a big dude!

Looking forward to getting back out to Stadium and Main and see the ball moving around!
