I was at the Nat'l Championship game in 2013 and he will remain an all-time favorite for that game and many others. I'm sure this was a tough decision.

I just heard the news and glad I wasn't the duplicate post.  I give Spike a lot of credit for his determination.  His success in basketball at Michigan exceed most of our wildest expectation and he never displayed any sense of fear or determination on the court where his talent was often overmatched.  A fractured hip is a serious injury and his attempt a comeback was more surprising than his decision not to play.  I wish him the best in his future but I have no worries about him being successful in the next step in his life.

Clearly one's health comes first, but this is a rather sad day for Michigan hoops all the same - so many great Spike memories come to mind now, not the least of which involve a certain game in 2013 where he was simply on another plane. Really enjoyed watching him play and I wish him nothing but the best and hopefully he can get where he would like to be healthwise.

I was at the NCG in 2013 when a little unknown freshman from Indiana made it to the big time by scoring 17 points in the first half. He will forever be remembered for moments like that among the Wolverine faithful.

A sad day to be a Michigan hoops fan that's for sure.

Game shooting clinic was one of my favorite moments in Michigan sports history and I have been watching since before AC. His thing with Upton and spark off the bench was inspiring and wonderful too. Great kid, great story...what college athletics is all about. Bummed for him personally and for the program. He is going to be a huge success in life though. Good luck to him and gulp to our program. Really wanted to see him and Robinson in a shooting frenzy.

"This has been the toughest decision I have ever had to make," said Albrecht. "After taking a hard look at what is best for me, and this team, I will be stepping away from the game that has meant so much to me.
This is a career ender, not a season ender.

We have all enjoyed watching you become a true Michigan Man.  I was at the Final Four in Atlanta and it was amazing to see him light it up.  If only we had been more aggressive with how we used Trey Burke...

Brutal news. New him when I was at school. He's a great guy. I was looking at a similar operation and the surgeon told me it would be 10 months before I could walk without pain/risk of more damage. I was shocked when I saw him out there. His recovery has been incredible to this point, but I'm not surprised he needs more time. Real shame we won't have him out there this year, but he is definitely making a good decision for his long term health.

This seems like such a bad dream. The guy was by no means a favorite around MGOBLOG when he committed, but through hard work and clutch moments, he is probably one of the all time favorites around these parts. Thank you for everything you did for Michigan basketball, Spike!

This sucks. Feel bad for the kid and for the team. This season is disappointment after disappointment. Hopefully they can turn things around and get some positive momentum going.

Damn. Spike was one of my favorites. Really like the way he played. He never seemed afraid to shoot it from anywhere on the court. Just a brutal past few weeks. Good luck to him in whatever he does.

and a tremendous inspiration for anyone who has dribbled a basketball and dreamed of playing college basketball. Thanks for your service, Spike, you are a Michigan man through and through.

Wow, this is terrible. On the surface it sounds like coming back this year was a mistake--he was never right and he obviously still has more recovering to do. It seems that he could have redshirted. (Medical redshirt still possible?) But perhaps the scope of the injury is such that he thinks he'll never be able to play at the highest level again. It could be that there are complications, or something like that. Something that tells him that his basketball window is closing and that its best to focus on academics and the next part of his life. Whatever it is, it's sad.
