Speight receiving death threats?

Submitted by NashvilleBLUE on

In the below article, Mo Hursts talks about how much of a struggle it must be for Wilton "receiving death threats and people telling QBs to 'kill yourself'. You're supposed to be our fans and shouldn't be saying that type of stuff"

As a football fan, I'm obsessed with Michigan to a point where I periodically have to check my priorities because I put a lot of stock in a game; however, Mo's statements really puts the "dark side of sports" into perspective. Here is illustration of where obsession can lead to "Misery" levels.

I am as dissapointed with the up and down QB play as anybody, but when it crosses the entertainment realm and enters the realm of personal attacks (nevermind the student-athlete part), then it gets psychotic.

Hopefully this is just a few twitter trolls (e.g. the Isiah Thomas jersey burning) and not a legitimate thought by some of these fans, because that would be dispicable.

EDIT: As someone pointed out below, The 247 article I linked left out a pretty critical follow-up on Mo's statement with the section below, which can be found in the article here

---Wait. Did Speight get death threats?

“I assume so,” Hurst answered. “I remember that punt thing [against Michigan State in 2015], yeah.”

It’s college football. Not life versus death.---

In recent seasons past. And now someone is threatening after a 2-0 start. Im calling BS. Im starting to feel with this and the AandM thing i think a rival fan looking for a certain reaction is more probable. Equally disgusting but much more effective if directed at a rival posing as a "true fan".

must be blessing and a curse. If you are Baker Mayfield today, imagine the opportunities. Baker being chased by the police, not so much. Wilton Speight just needs a couple good games to get the nut jobs off hus back, and stay away from social media.

Except in literally the next sentence is revealed that Hurst "assumes" the death threats. He's not taking about something that actually happened, at least as far as anyone knows.

So now if you're critical of Speight, you will be thrown into the 'death threat' category by some.

Not going to stop me from saying what I think of Speights game one bit.

I know some people are just irrational and unstable sports fans, every fan base has those kind of people. Though some of the time threats like these are probably coming from gamblers, who lost a lot of money because a team lost or didn't cover the spread.

A butt hurt gambler will sometimes feel the need to angrily blame a player for the money they lost. I'm not advocating this kind of behavior. I'm just mentioning the possibilities.

EDIT: I now see that someone mentioned this in the thread.

I'm as big of a Speight doubter as they come but this is pretty sad. Some people take sports too far. Sports are meant to be fun. Entertainment. I just laugh whenever I see people crying or getting upset about it. Pretty fucking pathetic. Grown men acting like babies over a damn game that has nothing to do with them.

has started a quarterback that met the expectations of most fans and was the anticipated starter of the very coach who recruited the player he thought would lead his team during his tenure as coach. Now, this was true in the Schembechler era as it was going forward.

If you were around here during the time that Henson and Brady were battling for the starting spot, most Michigan fans would now insist they were Brady fans, and they would be lying big time.

Brady was never regarded as the best quarterback in the battle for the starting spot until he finally won the job midway to late in his junior season. After the first two games of his first season as starter, he had lost to both ND and Syracuse.

In his first year as a starter as a freshman, Chad Henne was thrown into the starting role after Matt Guttierez came up with an injury as the opener approached and Henne became the surpirse starter on opening day and then secured that role over four years.

Henne took over for John Navarre after Navarre was cruelly thrown into the role of starter because the only quarterback that Michigan fans anointed as their guy from the get-go, Drew Henson, left to play baseball for the NY Yankees. The cruel joke is that Michigan fans wanted Henson when Henson abandoned the progrqm and his team.

Brady was never the beloved qb in the Brady-Henson era, it was Henson who the fans wanted to succeed and replace him. Brady was constantly challenged and succeeded through his own determination and perserverence. He was never the beloved leader in Ann Arbor. And those who claim otherwise are lying through their teeth. He had to prove himself week after week until he was finally accepted through the dint of his own personality and performance.

Navarre and Henne proved themselves likewise. And I suspect that until Speight proves himself in the same way, he will never be given his due.

Seriously tho I would trade Speight for almost every starting QB in the top 25 and probably find another 10-20 more outside the top 25 i would get rid of him for

I have a hard time valuing this take when you said Shane Morris was better than Speight yesterday.

Shane Morris who had 0 TD passes here in 4 years and had barely 4 yards an attempt career.

You don't really sound like much of a fan.

To you and other haters.  Maybe watch NFL instead as college football may not provide the level of professionalism you are looking for, outside of Heisman candidates.

However I am a fan of the Michigan Wolverines . Just wait till one Saturday when he cost us a game and then maybe you all will come around or just watch this Saturday when he throws a pick six, fumbles, over throws wide open receivers and read the comments to see how many share the same opinion as me

It has always been obvious to me that Michigan fan base isn't much different from most. There are tons of top notch fans...a few fanatics and then the 10% of "fans" who have mental issues. These are the ones who would send death threats because for one game they couldn't taunt the rival fan base.

Fans need to wrap their head around the fact....They don't play the game!!!! It is sad that 18-22 year olds can move on better than 30+ year old's

being generated both within and outside the program. It feels like we're in the middle of a losing season with crap falling apart..but we're 2-0 and still on course for a good season.

Who is stirring the pot?

What fucking Piece of shit loser is making death threats to Speight? You loser cock sucking pussy mother fuckers need to jump head first off an interstate overpass into a semi trucker convoy with an IED duct taped to your sphincter. You can criticize all you want but making death threats is another level of retardation.

I've been grumpy lately with QB play but this changes things for me. I am a fan of this team and every team going forward so I am going to cheer them on. Win or lose.

No more booing, if they can't get support and love from a home crowd then what the heck are we?

Depression is not uncommon, nor is it amongst college kids with the weight of succeeding at one of the country's best universities, while also having the pressure of hundreds of thousands of Michigan fans wanting you to be an all-star football player on Saturday

I guess having known so many kids in my time at M who struggled with failure, feeling inadequate, and feeling depressed, for anyone to say "kill youself" to kid for playing football needs to get some sense beat into them. Whether it happened to Wilt or not, I know it happens to college athletes all too often. I think Bosch was struggling with depression while he was here too. I honestly wish we could somehow ban those clowns from Michigan football, the internet, life, etc.

Probably the same Michigan fans that wear misogynistic shirts that say things like "Ann Arbor is a Whore" in an effort in intentionally insult women.

Hint: Probably not a Michigan fan at all.

First, I didn't delete it. If you've deleted it already I think it's already over. If you still have it, and you have the iPhone 7 or better with, ahem, pressure touch, there are ways to get the app to work. I leaned this from another user on this site.
