He was a 3/4 star recruit IIRC.

One guy, so you can probably chalk it up to "shit happens."  We'll see if it becomes a trend.

Two Juniors, a sophomore and a RS freshman.  It is a lot, but take a redshirt, ride the bench for a year, and then you only have to beat out a guy or two for the second RB spot.  It's crowded, but not all that different from your typical competition for an incoming freshman, especially when you consider how they split carries between 2-3 guys.

A crowded back field is what we currently have. An elite back or a featured back is what we currently do not have. A kid like Miller or in our case Rawls and Hayes figure they are good enough to move up the depth chart. If kids didn't think this way it would be hard to have anything more than a 2 deep at any school.

Exactly my point.  MSU's is a little more crowded than most with three guys who were producers as Sophomores and Freshmen last year, but you could still come in and think you have three good years of production ahead of you, or more, if you think you could pick off one of the guys ahead of you.

If you were a five star type RB, I could see avoiding a depth chart like MSU's and going where you are practically guaranteed early playing time.  But, as a borderline 3*/4* guy should know you're likely going to have to wait your turn a bit, no matter what the position and school.

I think MSU's young RBs were a product of a good offensive line in front of them. This is not to say they don't have talent at that position but I do think we will see their running game take a step back due to losses up front.

As far as your 5 star vs. 3/4 star RB arguement goes, I don't think these kids or coaches look at things this way. Regardless of ranking Miller would have had a chance to compete for playing time in his RS Freshman or Sophomore year. Maybe sooner with injuries and transfers. Do I need to remind you about Mike Hart?

Wait, are we arguing?  I think we pretty much agree, the depth chart shouldn't have really been a problem to the lone RB recruit in the class.

I only brought up the 5 star example, as a limited situation where a guy might look at MSU's current depth chart and decide to go somewhere with more questions at the position.  If a guy expects to turn pro after 3 years, he might not want to enter competition with an experienced stable of RBs.  Everyone else, you're right, expects to be the guy that breaks through the depth chart.

A Lansing guy is not considered "national", he would be "local". MSU has moved beyond winning the state to winning the country, just sit back and watch the magic unfold

About OSU, they likely would not lose a year of eligibility when (not if at this point) the NCAA places sanctions on the program, especially if there is a bowl ban.

For the State commit, i'm not sure.  I would think that he would face some sort of limitations, similar to when a player does not get accepted to a school (like Demar Dorsey) after signing a LOI, and likely have to spend a year in a junior college.

was enrolled yet, I don't believe he was because the article says they dropped him from his LOI instead of kicked him off the team. If he wasn't on the team yet then I can't imagine him having used up some of his eligibility or this counting against the 2011 season for him. He's still competing in high school age games.

With Sparty's depth at RB, and relatively young depth at that, I don't see his departure negatively effecting them in terms of depth chart or production on the field.

However, they do need at least one legit RB in this class now.

Are all the good RBs in Ohio taken already?

Hi JT,

I think your question might be better answered after Bri'Onte Dunn decides what he is going to do. As far as I know, Dunn's "other" schools include the likes of MSU, PSU, and the University of Michigan. Perhaps this may pertain to Dunn, perhaps.

As an '82 alum of Lansing Sexton, it wouldn't shock me if he were running afoul of the law a bit. I was actually pulling for him to do well and hope he gets it together if this is in fact what led to the parting of ways.

I have not even heard of this guy till now.  It seems that we offered him, but I don't ever remember hearing about his recruitment.

Yeah, I saw that too. In all fairness, picking Wisconsin and MSU to win each division and MSU overall is about the safest thing the News could do. They tied for the championship last year with MSU having beaten UW. Things are not going to shake out like that again this year.

It could be to give some more room for the 2013 recruiting class in which some say MSU will have around 16 players, but I don't see how that is considering they haven't had a class larger then 24 in recent years, and the recruits to total players ration is 25/100 (25 commits every four years to total 100 players).

Going back to a couple other forums on here, some talked about the 85 scholarship total on a team, but I had heard on multiple sources that this does not count the redshirts.  A program can pick up as many players as they need to fill the 100 slot as long as 15 of them redshirt (or more) to bring it down to the 85 player limit.  The 85 number is the players who dress and are available to play in the game.

For example; if a team graduates a number of players for a given year and they have 70 members left on sholarship, they could recruit a class of no more then 30 and reach the 100 mark as long as they redshirt 15 or more players to get down to the 85 mark.  The last I heard about this was on 97.1 the ticket by Mike Valenti.  Maybe someone with a higher level of expertise can give in their information?

Two problems with your post. First:

A program can pick up as many players as they need to fill the 100 slot as long as 15 of them redshirt (or more) to bring it down to the 85 player limit.

That's not right. Anyone who has their education paid for during that semester counts against the 85. Christian Pace counted against our 85 last year.

Second: Listening to Mike Valenti. Stop it.

Sparty24monthsto7years had a thread on this kid's release, but everyone was tight lipped about the circumstances and the thread was locked up pretty quickly.

Apparently rampant speculation on transfers is reserved only for OUR kids.

days after he could, he was never going anywhere but State.  Tim Staudt been all over this kid for awhile and believed he would be a great addition to MSU.  He did spend some of last season either injured or suspended, I forget.

Perplexing.

Wow. Sparty is losing 4-star players left and right.
