Sparty's Cupcake Conference Schedule

Submitted by Mike Damone on

Sparty may have a good team, but I can't let their regular season BIG championship go without mentioning that they got a HUGE break with their schedule.  Perhaps the most advantageous I have seen.  Consider their schedule against what I consider the top 5 other teams in the BIG:

Michigan - Only played once at home, did not have to play on the road.  Lost at home.

Ohio State - Only played once on the road, and lost.

Purdue, Nebraska and Penn State - Only played once at home and did not have to play on the road.  Won at home.  All three are absolute bears to beat on the road.  Michigan had to play all three on the road, and went 1-2.

Don't want this to be sour grapes, and I know they cant control their schedule.  But man...

Bring on the tourneys, and let the best team prevail!  Go Blue!

Well, we'll get to have a say about all of this when the BTT starts.

I know it matters to purists, and the degree of difficulty is more, but I don't even rememeber who won the regular season last year.  Winning the BTT was a hoot.

I'm ready to do it again.

They got a break but who cares. The B1G schedule is going to be a lottery every year. Some years you catch a break. They are 4 in KenPom and 4 in Sagarin and pass the eye test and likely would have won the conference anyways. They are the best team in the B1G. Hope we are in the same region in the NCAA tourney and are the reason they don't win a ship!

Not sure how you can say they would have won the conference with a harder schedule.

They were a miracle comeback away from sharing the title and being the 2 seed. They certainly could have lost to us, PSU,
Nebraska, or OSU again.

They could have lost to us and others, or they could have beaten them also. They won the B1G outright and are the best team by most advanced stats. I hope we beat them in the conference tourney and it would be even better to end their season in the big dance.

At home. That’s a fact! Please elaborate on how that passes, your eye test, stats, ratings? Also please tell me the last number one team or if their has ever been a number one team in the nation that was any lower than a two seed! Their projected to be a 3 seed so with all your proven Sagarin ratings please tell me if that has ever happened.

I've always wanted to meet the type of person who attempts to start fights on opposing team-specific blogs to see if they're as pathetic in person as they seem online. You *actually* did the calculations and determined that this is the best use of your time? There's nothing you could do that would be better spend? Yikes.

Well they have 2 lottery picks and solid depth up and down their roster. They had a bad 3 game stretch and have finished the season winning 12 straight. Why is it so challenging for people on here to give Sparty credit? Do outright B1G championships now only count if you play all the top teams twice? My point is there are years the schedule will work for you and against you.

Only one of those 12 wins came against a team projected to make the tournament - and it was a home game.  That's absurd.

2017-18 MSU is the poster child for why the B1G is going to a 20-game schedule next year, with protected rivalries.

It's ok to acknowledge a rival school has a very good team. Nothing would make me happier than seeing them go out early or even better us knocking them out. I just don't understand why saying something positive about another school on this site=trolling

So does the RCMB have, like, a pinned thread about how to badly concern-troll the MGoBoard?  It's the same talking points from all of you.  Don't forget the "I went to Michigan but all my family went to MSU so I care for them too" - that's a staple.

By chance, are you the resident concern troll in the family? Just curious. Alternatively, do the three people that are MSU fans concern troll MSU, or are you on the MSU side and elect to concern troll Michigan? The possibilities are decidedly finite, but still kind of intriguing.

You certainly live up to your name, if nothing else.

I'm a Spartan fan. I like the information this board provides, and once you sift through all the crappy posts, you find some quality posts and insights. I think you guys have good teams and I like when my team beats your team... What's to interpret here?

I respect you but don't envy you for having to determine real from troll accounts but your gumshoe skills are heavily lacking on this one. I posted that I believe that MSU has a very good basketball team and supported it with advanced statistics and showing that our SOSs are not very different. I was eviscerated for it. I hope I'm wrong, I don't think that I am. That's fine. Haven't made one false statement in any of my posts. Responses aiming for intellectual discourse are not well tolerated as I have personally come to understand. Let me try again with something more palatable.

Go Blue! We're the best! Everybody else sucks! There is nothing remotely positive to say about anything not related to Michigan and anytime anybody else wins it must be downplayed!

Their KenPom SOS is 67, 60, 72. Ours is 52, 41, 64. Yes their B1G schedule was easier than ours. They still are outright champs. Move on. I'm saying this post is very Sparty like complaining about something like this.

I do lack blind homerism so I see how you could confuse me. This is an opinion of mine, that's fine that you disagree. The advanced metrics like MSU. Their SOS is similar to ours as I posted above. Does that mean we aren't a good team either? They won the conference, I'm not happy about it either, but they won. Diminishing their accomplishments is childish and incredibly hypocritical.

You're horribly misguided man. Michigan fan my whole life and alum w/in last 5 years. Applied to 1 school because I never had a desire to go anywhere else. I can't stand MSU but I think they have a very good basketball team. Also think people who act like you give our fanbase the reputation that they have. That's ok. I rarely don't get along with somebody so I'd probably like you too in real life. Go Blue!

You are getting shredded for being level headed, as the majority of the board is made up of the fringe lunatic portion of our fanbase...as is the case for nearly any online forum whether it's sports, politics, twitter, etc.

I don't necessarily agee with your assention that MSU would have won the conference with our schedule, but they are a good team and when they are firing on all cylinders they may be the best team in the country. They can only play the schedule they are handed, and they did enough to win the conference outright. Can't do anything but tip your hat and smile that we beat them on their court. Hopefully we get another chance at them in the BIG tourney.

Not battle-tested and their mugging style of Big Ten play doesn't fare well in the tourney setting. I'll be very surprised if they win more than two games.
