Somewhat OT: Sooo...what do we do now? #MGoBoredom

Submitted by Mr. Yost on

Football is essentially over. Basketball has started, but I don't think most people are truly going to judge this team until late Jan/early Feb. Hockey is here, but it's a looong season and we're a month away from conference play.

So what are you doing to pass the time?

2 years ago we were going to a BCS bowl. Last year there was the excitement of seeing Gardner improve each and every week. This year there isn't much to hang out hat on until February.

In the past we've had recruiting, but even that is about done for next year.

Just seems like an "off" year for college sports. There will be some great bowl games, but I'm not sure there will be great teams playing. No one is elite. Basketball relies so heavily on young players who need a couple months to adjust and/or improve. Recruiting is about over.

Time to catch up on the sitcoms? Bake a cake? Work on the car? Make a blanket?

What are you doing to pass the time? --- or are you content with the current offering in college sports for December/Jan?

Watch college basketball and college hockey like I do every other year? This is not boredom. Sports in July is boredom. This the most exciting time of the year. Its the very brief overlap of college football, basketball, and hockey. This is the best time of year to not be bored

Mr. Yost might've known that I'd be working on writing a sitcom about an auto mechanic who likes to doze off on the blanket while he's changing oil and daydreams about entering baking contests.

If I had the money, the time, the staff and the permission from the powers at Fort Schembechler, I’d be working on a series of video features for MGoBlue.com, highlighting some of the Michigan football players when they’re away from the football field, like:
  • The Wile family’s doctors and their Michigan Medical School legacy.  Matt Wile’s a fifth-generation Michigan student, and the previous four generations of Wile men attended medical school in Ann Arbor.  Maybe this also could focus on what the football team does for the patients at CS Mott Children’s Hospital, as well as Matt’s academics.
  • Back to School -- A road trip with Frank Clark and Willie Henry to visit their Glenville High school coach, Ted Ginn, Sr.
  • Working in the art studio with Kyle Kalis and Vincent Smith – Maybe a road trip to Pahokee.
  • Jack Miller and his great-uncle Jim Leyland talking baseball – Maybe a road trip to Cooperstown and the Baseball Hall of Fame.
  • JDK and Rey and Breezy – A recording session with Jack Kennedy, Joe Reynolds and Jabrill Peppers.
  • Who Are These People? –  Visits with members of the Scout Team.
  • Where Nobody Knows Your Name . . . But Cheers To You, Erik Gunderson! – Visit with the one senior member of Michigan Football Team 134 who rarely saw game action. He’s majoring in Psychology and Sociology.
  • Journey from West Africa – Visits with Amara Darboh and Jehu Chesson to discuss their West African heritage.   There have been articles written about Amara Darboh’s parents having been killed during the civil war in Sierra Leone, and how he was cared for by relatives who were able to escape to other African nations and then finally to Des Moines, Iowa.  (“Is this heaven?”  “No, it’s Iowa!”)
  • Will Hagerup’s Year in Purgatory – While the Big Ten’s 2012 Punter of the Year still may be best known for that unfortunate bad snap off his helmet and his suspensions, it might be interesting to learn about what he has had to overcome since the suspension and what this season has been like for him.
  • Son of A Coach – Visits with Jeremy Jackson, Patrick Kugler and Henry Poggi to learn how their lives have been impacted by having a father who’s a football coach.
  • Biomedical Engineer, Joey Burzynski – Learning about the challenges of playing football at Michigan while pursuing and excelling in a rigorous academic program.
  • Order On The Court – Visiting with two of the players who led Ohio’s Pickerington Central High School to a state basketball championship and then enrolled at Michigan, but took separate athletic paths, Taco Charlton and Caris Levert.
  • Shane On You – Visit with Shane Morris to discuss the work he did recruiting other high school football players to join him in Michigan Football’s Class of 2013 – and maybe a visit with Michael Ferns to learn about his Team 135 shirts for members of Michigan Football’s Class of 2014.
  • The Black and (Mostly) Blue Brothers – Visit with Jibreel Black and his brother Larry who played for Indiana and has been on the Cincinnati Bengals’ injured reserve list this year, recovering from a fractured leg and dislocated ankle.
  • Some Final Words Before They Leave – Visits with Jon Falk, Frank Beckmann, Taylor Lewan, Jeremy Gallon, Michael Schofield, Fitz Toussaint, Quinton Washington, Cam Gordon, Thomas Gordon, Courtney Avery and the Kicking Crew of Jareth Glanda, Drew Dileo and Brendan Gibbons.

So I came up with the ticket spreadsheet a few years back. I always planned to do something better. Now I have twins, so I don't have time. If someone wants to program a new solution, I bet it would be appreciated.

Until then, I plan to selfishly attempt to promote a new tab I created on the ticket spreadsheet to enable mgoposters to sell/trade Michigan memorabilia. After my twins were born, a few generous people sent me hand-me-downs. Living in Columbus those were hard to come by.

I'd like to pass on the good will, so I'll be listing the clothes they can no longer fit. I'm guessing this would be something that would be useful to many of us as I see the overwhelming support a new family member is announced.
