Sometimes Drew Sharp Makes Me Giggle

Submitted by rbgoblue on
What a douche. I mean, who the hell is this guy? It is what I have come to expect from Drew Sharp, so no point getting angry. Thats what fuels him. Instead, I will just giggle. Printer-friendly article: here Where does he come up with some of this stuff?
The Clipboard Genius blew this one.
Hilarious isn't he? So clever! Consider stand-up Drew?
Turner's incredible moment officially stamped the expiration date on Beilein's free pass.
Who said he was even getting one? Thats right, lets be hasty and run another coach out of town after year 3. And now for my personal favorite...
The Wolverines hope the lesson learned isn't that last season's NCAA tournament appearance proves more aberration than custom. If so, then there should be another West Virginia coaching alum facing the hot seat soon in Ann Arbor.
Thats right. Let's take a basketball game lost in the waning seconds to bring up your dislike for Rodriguez. I swear, with this guys, its never ending. Its a perpetual stream of self-promotional "I told you so's" and moral condescension. Can't we just enjoy sports and leave the drama out of it?

yourself to his articles. You know his mission is to piss off as many UM followers as he can. He's a waste. You can be constructively negative but at the same time you need some balance and actual facts. He is a disgrace to the profession.

Don't get me wrong. I despise Drew Sharp. He is horrible at his job and even worse as a person. But, I actually agree with this comments on the "expiration date on Belein's free pass." There have obviously been a lot of grumblings about the below-average season thus far from some fans but Turner's shot, fair or not, may give the older alum and more fair weather fans something to point to. I'm not saying Belein is on the hot seat, the guy is a great coach, but he'll likely be facing much more criticism next year that he didn't see at all this year.

I agree 100%. I think it would be interesting to see what the shelf life of college basketball coaches is these days. At what age does their winning percentage begin to dip, and dip significantly. And just how close is Beilein to that age? Doing something like that would either strengthen the "he's been a winner everywhere, even Michigan last year" argument or begin to disprove it.

My theory is that the FreeP sports writers are riding a wave of negativity in this state due to the economic downturn. With so many people out of work, budget cuts, etc., it's easy to get people riled up when you're throwing more negativity in people's faces. Their target audience appears to be the "fire coach so-and-so" crowd, who are probably the same people calling for the ousters of government officials, superintendents, and other high profile people, who they blame for their own economic problems, or for the problems of the state.

Look at my previous comment from yesterday (which I gots neg-bombed on cause a lot of dicks herer just don't want to ever hear the truth). I'm not calling for anyone's head, certainly not Beilin's, but I noted that you absolutely can NOT let a great player take a totally UNcontested 38 footer. Drew Sharp notes you can't let the best player in the country take an uncontested 37footer (clearly he reads mgoblog and my comments). Prepare for my all caps anger: THE ONLY THING WORSE THAN DREW SHARP IS WHEN MICHIGAN MAKES DREW SHARP CORRECT! Bill Martin has turned us into Northwestern! The road to glory will be a long one, my friends. Long. Painful. But mostly long and painful.

I don't know anything about coaching basketball. I'm only guessing here that the plan was to prevent an easy look at a game-tying deuce or a foul. Props to you for all your good ideas of how to coach it differently, but even the "best player in the country" is only a 34% shooter from 3-point land and that includes plenty of good, squared-up, open looks, which this wasn't. That 40-foot shot goes in 1 in 3 times *at best*. Unfortunately for us all, this was the one. And you know that any touch on Turner draws at least a 2 (before the shot) or 3-shot foul, which probably equals the same, painful result. No, man. Luck + Angry-Michigan-Hating-God = this Evan Turner dagger. And Sharp is just an opportunist. Quit reading that crap.

Turner from the 3pt line is 34%. Turner from 37ft is something much less than that (20%?, 15%?, 10%?). Eight plus out of ten times that shot doesn't go, and we're all-of-a-sudden looking at a real (believe it or not) shot at an NCAA berth we have no business getting. If I'm Beilein, I'll take those odds any day.

You are right Brian. This new generation of M fan really disgusts me. They'll rip on a guy like Gittleson in order to praise Barwis. They'll neg the hell out of truth, most of all. And the majority of them have never kissed a girl.

You didn't get negged because "a lot of dicks herer (sic) just don't want to ever hear the truth;" you got negged because you are a sebaceous cyst on Drew Sharp's gluteus medius. In a way, though, it lends a whole new meaning to being "joined at the hip."

No, actually, you let anyone take a 38 footer, because 90% of the time, they don't go in. Also "uncontested" is playing fast and loose with "facts". It's unbeleivable that a guy hits a complete fucking prayer, and people want to BLAME somebody. He hit a miracle shot. It happens. Move along.

but the drew sharp haters have it wrong (which pains me to say) it was a bad decision, a bad coaching move and a pitiful defense you at least need to get your arms up (and i dont mean from standing still 4 feet away) and since it looks like i'll never be able to post to the mgoboard, at least i'm liberated to speak the truth belien's a good guy, a decent coach, and what michigan probably needs in this several years transition. but he blew it yesterday. you know it. he knows it. the team knows it. even drew sharp knows it -- that's how obvious it was.

I think we all agree this wasn't like giving up a lay-up or an open 15-foot j. What I don't like is, "Let's take our chances - it's only a 10-20% chance (or whatever) a long shot will go in." Why not make it even MORE difficult when you can easily do so? Beilein's inexplicable decision to not put a big man on the ball was completely passive. There is absolutely nothing to be lost by doing so. You've got four other people to put back to defend the rim & half-court line for 2.2 secs. You've already made the decision not to challenge the dribble or the shot, so you're not playing defense anyway (and please, Douglass kind-of/short-of getting a hand somewhere near his him didn't make any difference (unless you consider a 6' 3" G with moderate jumping skills trying (wisely) not to foul really able to influence the shot of a 6' 7" G/SF). It should have taken a miracle (a la of 60 foot heave, a true 1 in a 100 shot) to beat us. Instead, you got an unhurried, in-control, improbable (but not close to impossible) shot from the Big 10 Player of the Year. I like Beilein. I hope he succeeds for everyone's sake. But your job as a coach is to increase your team's odds for success - and he didn't do everything he could in that area in this case.

March 13th, 2010 at 3:07 PM ^

....to (a) have one more man back to guard against an easy look close to the basket, and (b) not to foul. You have to concede that a foul in these circumstances leads to a disaster - two free throws to send the game to OT - which isn't likely to end well. I'm willing to consider other opinions, but I'm just not ready to say it was a bad decision. I think I'd be happy to put every game in the season on the line with the other team's best player taking a shot from 37 to win or lose. I'd probably have a better record than Bobby Knight.

If Beilein only had your insight, he would have put a man on the ball. There would have no way for OSU to get an even higher percentage shot in that case, right? While everyone would rather give OSU a 0% chance to make the final shot instead of 10-20% shot, what you think Beilein should have done opens up the possibility at an even higher percentage shot. Trying to prevent 40 foot shots only opens up holes in the defense for even better shots.

Like I said, and for which I was negbombed for, this is all made even worse by the fact that Drew Sharp is right. It was a great shot by a great player ENABLED by a BAD coaching move on the part of Michigan. No amount of rationalization or classic youtube video will change that.

robpollard

March 13th, 2010 at 8:47 PM ^

Again, I'm not saying there is a zero percent chance OSU would have scored if we had a guy on the baseline. There is always the possibility for luck & great play by the opposition. However, look at the Valpo play - they had to do THREE excellent & difficult things. 1) Complete a pass to half-court with a guy in the passer AND the receiver's face, 2) the initial receiver quickly and EXTREMELY accurately dumps a twisting, in the air pass to a guy on the wing and 3) the guy on the wing has to hit a quick 25 footer. Perhaps any one of those things is, INDIVIDUALLY, easier to do than Turner's shot (e.g., Drew's shot was 10-12 feet closer than Turner's). However, doing ALL 3 is certainly more difficult. Think of what could have gone wrong - 1) the on-the ball defender slaps it away, 2) the half-court defender slaps it away/causes the receiver to juggle the ball, 3) the person defending Drew gets/re-directs the ball, 4) Drew misses the shot. We just essentially said, "Screw it, we'll give them a slightly harder #4." Let's let them easily get the ball, to their best player, smoothly running up-court, and let him try a 35-40 footer with no one really in his face (as stated, Stu's to short, to far away, and rightly to afraid of fouling to meaningfully challenge the shot). Agreed - it's a low % shot. Why not make it lower (stipulating, you can't make it 0%)? We let the very end of the game happen to us, instead doing something that was extremely low-risk to put the odds even more in our favor. And that's, unfortunately, on Beilein.

saveferris

March 13th, 2010 at 2:48 PM ^

Agreed, and I think you're being generous with your 90% estimate, more like 99%. Those shots never go in, unless it's the "Winter of Infinite Sadness". What you don't want to do in that situation if get right up in the guys face, risk the foul, and put him on the line for 3. I'm certain that's what Beilein told his guys and that's the right coaching move. Hats off to Turner, he made the prayer.

March 13th, 2010 at 11:12 AM ^

I simply take issue in that if the shot is missed as the proper percentages play that it should have then there is no foundation or cause for the article. Trying to lynch Belien for playing the proper percentages is poor logic and unjust. It's a bad break-nothing more.

robpollard

March 13th, 2010 at 9:01 PM ^

I stopped reading Sharp about 3 years ago b/c he was so negative and was (and I assume is) a poor writer. I could care less what he thinks. Additionally, I think Beilein is, overall, a good coach, though he really struggled this season, as his team had a real crisis in confidence (as evidenced by our horrendous outside shooting) and he couldn't figure out a way to get them out of it. He certainly should be given at least two more years to prove he can get this program back regularly in the NCAAs. I just have a problem with this passive, "them's the breaks" attitude/style on this last play. A good coach can make a bad decision. As I've stated elsewhere, we had a very, very low-risk way to reduce their low odds even lower, and b/c we're worried about, what, Zack Gibson or Sims being so stupid that he would reach across the end line and smack the in-bounder on the arm, getting a tech, that we can't try to make things harder for OSU? We were the underdog. We NEEDED that game more than OSU. Go out and do, within reason, anything actively to increase your chances to win. Don't just cross your fingers and hope for the best.

I have no problems with any of Sharp's statements this time. In this piece, he is acting out the role journalists should act out -serving as a check on public systems. Belein and RR deserve fair criticism from the media (and his statements this time are fair) - and they should be on the hot seat. If they weren't on the hot seat, we would be in real trouble, supporting a program driven more by complacency than the desire to win championships.

somewittyname

March 13th, 2010 at 11:41 AM ^

Coaches don't get put on the hot seat for losing to a top 10 team on a 35-40 ft game winning shot. Last year we overachieved, this year we underachieved. In my mind this cancels out so lets evaluate in a year or two when JB has had the time to truly play with his players.

Yeah, that one shot is what I based my hot seat comment on. Great argument you have invented there. Sharp said that Belien "should" "soon" face the hot seat, not that he is on it or will be. I am basing my comments on what seems to be the consensus - that Belein needs to have a great season in the next two or three years, and if not, he should be gone. Stop inventing things to argue with. In addition, people say that the team overachieved last year because of what they did this year, but that they underachieved this year because of what they did last year. They overachieved because they later underachieved, and underachieved because the previously overachieved. It's a tautological, vacuous rationalization. Belein simply needs do better. And journalists need to call him out if he does not - if done fairly. WHich Sharp did in this case.

I don't mean that as an attack on the OP FWIW. It's just that you know their bias and you know they suck. So there's no surprise there.

Tamburlaine

March 13th, 2010 at 11:46 AM ^

I kind of disagree with the OP. Belein just got a three-year extension. It may not mean the honeymoon is still in full swing, but he's got a guaranteed paycheck at least. I'm going to submit that as his "free pass" because when you get millions of dollars to put together a middling program, that qualifies in my book. The fans may be grumbling, but the bank account isn't. And, uh, now it's time to think about next year. Anyone optimistic?

somewittyname

March 13th, 2010 at 11:51 AM ^

If Manny leaves and Trey doesn't come then I doubt anyone would be optimistic. If we have at least one or the other then we should be in good shape (assuming Morgan will be serviceable).

Over the football and basketball state right now? Ok if we go back 10 years we have asked our leadership at Michigan to make changes to get us into the game. After App St we screamed for a change and we got it folks, bball we begged for a good coach we got it. The problem is we can't accept losing nor should we . My point is Michigan is never happy and no matter what happens there is always the guy from left field screaming something . If your a Michigan man this is our fault for always wanting the best and no matter if Rich Rod wins or If coach B gets us into the dance it's not good enough with some part of this family. I just let people rant because I recall when Carr one a national title he was dogged for this and that.
