So is Vinopal now behind Cam? Wasn't sure that was confirmed.
Won't ask about third string if Van Slyke is still nicked up since that would leave the Gatorade cooler playing the outfield. I have not heard any Vinopal chatter in the fall. Any updates on how he is doing before I start my Cam Gordon Please God Stay Healthy candlelight vigil?

Yeah, Vinopal is now 2nd string. Also, Van Slyke is out for the year.

Maybe I just blocked it out.

Vinopal has really stepped it up the past few weeks!
GO BLUE-BEAT ND!

Could be a little coach speak there, IMO.

My question is how raw if Furman as a safety?? Though maybe he is being groomed for the Kovacs or C Johnson spot... i cant imagine with his range that he cant cover a lot of ground unless his instincts are that bad in the defensive backfield.

Furman is playing Spur, which is Carvin Johnson's position. He's essentially an outside linebacker. He played rush linebacker in high school, so I really really really doubt you'll see him playing FS at any point.

why did Brandon Smith leave again?
September 8th, 2010 at 5:53 PM ^
he wasn't a free safety tho. My guess is that he would have been an Spur in this defense.

I doubt he would have been a Spur. He was too stiff. The Spur position existed last year (we called Steve Brown a SAM back then), and Brandon Smith didn't play it. He'd probably be a weakside linebacker (Mouton's position).

He wasn't quite the ath judged by the current coaching staff. Something about stiff hips and wasn't quick. Something to consider also...a LC recruit.

To all those who whined about Ray Vinopal and Carvin Johnson getting offers. Now, you'll actually have to watch them perform and find out who was right about their talents -- the gurus or the coaches.

I'm not going to judge the worth or abilities of a true freshman that has been unexpectedly thown into the line up a few weeks after arriving on campus.
And neither should anyone else.
Best of luck, kids. Don't let any failures crush your confidence.

Thought him and Carvin were supposed to gain some needed some size. I hated seeing Carvin get hurt right away. Maybe a year in a collegiate conditioning program might have prevented that. Well into the breach.

It sucks that he got hurt, but if its serious he can always medical redshirt to preserve his eligibility.

...unimpressed with the 3 star mafia sharpening the knives on true freshmen...
September 8th, 2010 at 5:39 PM ^
Probably wouldn't be a bad idea to start that candlelight vigil anyway.....

Wasn't Vinopal pretty much a tackling machine in HS? If so, wouldn't be surprised if that is why he is getting the nod.

Ray is a very fast young man that loves to lay people out. He has a great attitude and deserves to show the team what he can bring to the table. While it's not an upgrade, I don't think it's a downgrade either. Vinopal can play.
September 8th, 2010 at 5:55 PM ^
Josh Furman is being groomed to be the fastest LB on earth!!! Not a free safety. Ray is a safety and was brought here for that reason. RR knows what he is recruiting and how it fits his vision.
September 8th, 2010 at 9:32 PM ^
...his hips are tight and he has a low upside and...and...etc. etc. etc.
I hope Ray Vinopal blows the hell out of somebody crossing into his zone on Saturday. The guy is a vicious hitter...we'll see it.
