Snowflakes Thread: Offense Vs. Cincinnati

Man, that offense was ugly to watch.  I'd love to bench Speight, but are the options behind him better?  O'Korn?...no.  Peters?...I honestly don't know because I haven't seen him play much. 

Either way, Speight can NOT continue to play like shit and expect to beat the good teams on our schedule.  

The O-line also needs to block much better and establish a more consistent run game so that they can put games away in the 4th quarter.  That was painful to watch. 

Young team, not surprising we played a total shit game. This is why people talked about replacing all these players. The more shoes to fill, the greater the chances of a failure to replace effectively. Anyway, whatever. People will probably overreact a bit negative like they did on the positive side after Florida. It's one game. We're still headed towards ~10-3. And maybe no better anytime soon. 

Overall, this was a very rough day to say the least, and most of the reasons behind it was the offense. Wilton Speight looked horrible with all those high throws and inability to handle the ball as discussed thoroughly, but another thing I noticed even more today was the laziness on the details, the play-action fakes were more than obvious (RB wasn't even close to the fake handoff), the real handoffs were lazy from Speight (resulting in that bad fumble). Although I am beyond disapointed with Speight, he is still our starter as I have stated, I don't think O'Korn (let alone Peters) will be any more comfortable. However, the meritocracy continues in practice, and if anything happens, I'll take JH's word for it. The offensive line is still a lingering problem, one that will probably linger all year. It's just simply not that good, and while coaching this week can fix some of Speight's woes, they can't really improve the o-line. It's not that it's bad, but more that it's weak. Ty Isaac is clearly our starting RB no doubt about it. Chris Evans has obviously got incredible speed but he needs to work on breaking tackles because he did not break a single one. One thing that still I'm wondering about is the lack of McDoom jet sweeps, what is up with that?

I feel like I went to a nice restaurant. Everything was prepared beautifully and tasted good. The service was fine. Yet somehow something wasn't quite right. Maybe it was a baby crying at a nearby table, or a noisy kitchen staff or I didn't choose the right entree. I don't know. I hope I don't come back to this restaurant in November.

Harbaugh has had two spring practices, two fall practices, and one full season to coach up Wilton.  The current product is not very good, despite all of this coaching.  And if your argument is that Wilton is the best we've got, that limitation is on Harbaugh as well, as he's had two years to find a better QB candidate.

How can our offense be this bad after going up against our D every single day in practice? It just doesn't make sense.

Just complete easy passes and don’t look like an idiot.

I appreciate and will continue to root for Wilton to have a great year.  Seems like a great kid.  However, this team will only go as far as he can take us.  The box score stats don't look bad, but there is more to it than that.  The continual drive killing plays is what kills us.  Speight continues to overthrow open receivers, fumble the ball, struggle with clean handoffs,

 

From watching him throw, it looks like he is aiming the ball instead of throwing it.  I think he is truly afraid to make a mistake, which makes him make more mistakes.  I believe he reads the defense well,  but a slow release wrecks his timing of getting it to the receiver while they are still open.  Speight will be fine if he ever gets the confidence and plays without fear.  Hopefullly that happens sooner than later.

is really poor.  We had one base play that worked well.  Out number them wide and toss the ball that way.  Lots of work to do up front.

Offense not inspiring.

• I am most concerned about the OL. And mostly about the right side. I'm wondering how much better they are going to get.
• I think Speight is still sailing too many throws. Although, I trust Harbaugh in not giving the keys to O'Korn or Peters.
• Did any RB besides Ty do anything? I'll have to look up the yardage totals, but I don't think it was very pretty for anyone else. Again, not inspired.
• Perry seemed decent, and I think he got robbed on the one overturned pass. But the rest of the WR? Meh.
• Don't know what to think with TE group. They weren't terrible. But did they help protect Speight? Were they consistently open? Dunno.

Ball to our TE's more. Also, keep throwing towards grant Perry. We need more shallow crosses or something, get the ball to our athletic WR's and TE's. It allows them to use their speed. This will help speight as well as oline.

The play calling was downright awful for stretches of this game. 3rd and 10? Let's bootleg to a 1 yard crossing route! Everyone (coaches included) seemed a step off today.

Seems off. Very blah and boring. Can't get it to their athletes for some reason.

The oline, Turnovers, Speight over throws. Today was a whole team destruction. Evevryone passes the blame on Speight but the oline was less then good today. penalties and turnovers are killer. Need to be better as a team.

His fumbles are high school like. Throws were to the wrong spot and seemed like Cinci had a ton of first contact tackles on us. This kind of play gets you 3 or 4 " L " in the big ten. Hope it gets better.

I don't think anyone, coaches included, took this game seriously. 

Speight's not anywhere near the quality of the rest of his teammates.

Could he improve? Sure. But other than Harbaugh's reputation, I see no reason to believe that Speigh will improve. In fact the data point the other way right now.

Onwenu looked like the weakest OL link out there on my first watch. He picked up one stunt well in the early second quarter, and then he seemed to fall asleep and have a very confusing dream that involved flailing at ethereal pinatas.

I'm not decrementing my season expectations, but that's only because I already did that last week after Speight did what he did vs Fla. Seems clear to me that if Speight doesn't improve we're not going to have the type of season we were hoping for.

Offense is real bad. Like noticably worse than last year.

Red Zone inefficiencies really worry me going forward.

I see a lot of O-line criticism, but the play calling was disjointed.  Being multiple is great when it works, but when you don't establish anything or aren't great at anything, at what point do you start to rep specific things more?  When Rudock was QB it seemed like they had more checks to take advantage of free yardage based on defensive alignment.  This year has felt like a return to Borges and Hoke on multiple levels.  I don't know what combination of Speight, youth and lack of trust is contributing to this, but it is ugly.

At least the o-line and wrs will improve as the season goes on because they are young. I am hoping Speight can make some improvement
