Snowflakes and Hot Takes - Proposal for the Mods

Submitted by BoFan on

This proposal is meant with good intentions to improve the readability and participation in the Snowflakes threads:

Problem: I don’t read the Snowflakes threads anymore. I tried for a while. The problem is, for example, I may only be interested in what the board thought of the OL play, but to find anything I have to scan through hundreds of snowflakes on the QB and WRs.  And any comments there are on the OL are scattered which makes it difficult to have a meaningful discussion.

Proposal:  Break the snowflake threads into position groups:  QB, RB, Receivers, OL, DL, LB, DB.  It’s more threads, but it greatly incereases the utility of the threads while still eliminating the problem from a year or so ago with too many random threads.

More threads are better, IMO.

Let the bad threads that no one replies to drop off and the threads that are thread worthy go to the top.

People are going to post their hot takes so why not let them start a thread that no one will reply to instead of muddying the waters of a good thread.  They drag down good threads by having to sift through way too many posts to see good conversations.

My HOT TAKE of the day!

Well, the intent of the snowflake threads is to catch most of the hot takes that would otherwise become threads, a great of which are either generic statements / indictments or other statements of opinion that fall below the bar of threadworthy. The exception has always been, and I have stated as much, that if someone has a unit or player-specific analysis which they would like to put forth to the board, they are more than welcome to do so apart from those threads and it will be left alone. The understanding, of course, is that it cannot be a single sentence a la our friend "DISCUSS MAN", for example, but an actual well-formed and fleshed out opinion.

Sure but that's not new for me. I read some and although there are plenty of smart comments, they get drowned out by trolls but even more frustrating is the 100 replies to one troll or amazingly dumb comment. Sometimes I'm guilty of this myself but I usually just try to downvote and move on.

Don't many message boards have some feature that collapses a comment if it gets too negative? Would be good for clearing up space.

Like Southpaw and me, there are a lot of people that don’t wade through the snowflake/hot take threads anymore.  Further, I dont think people know thy can start another Unit thread when the snowflake thread already says you can’t. Finally, even if and when some decides to start a Unit thread, a lot of posters will have already made their point in the snowflake thread and are not going to re-post the same point. So at that point a unit thread is a lost cause.

From an Mgoblog business perspective you will see overal numbers and engagement go up, though modestly as a percent overall.

People can't even form a coherent thought as to the whole offense or defense.  I doubt they'd do much better trying to talk about the WRs or LBs.

I hardly even look at the comments anymore. If you want to talk OL you should be able to start a OL thread, but the snarksters will post 100 comments about how what you did was stupid.

The comments should also be ranked by likes and dislikes. Then a reader could easily read the comments the board felt were most informative/entertaining, and filter out trolls. Basic stuff found on most forms, that this forum lacks for some reason.

I haven't looked at snowflake threads in two years.  They're nothing but whiny bitches bitching about hot shit.  The game thread yesterday was very similar - nearly all comments were shit posts telling us that Don Brown sucks and Harbaugh can't coach.  I'll pass, thanks...

After the sad bullshit I read on the board last night, I would like to see it locked.  When 25 point victories with horseshit officiating still isn't good enough, what's the point of discussion.  The negativity around this whole site is ass.

I don't read the snowflake threads but it isn't because I don't want to search through them for people's opinions on specific items.

Given that they're (properly imho) sticky for the day or so on the front page message board adding more means nothing else will show up there.  I rather enjoy the snark on the afternoon/evening games threads and wouldn't want them to be diminished.

The mods and proprietors can do whatever they please.

But I will say, I don't go through the snowflake threads very often either. I'd personally much rather have more threads, and I can decide for myself whether I want to go to a particular thread.

I thought snowflakes started because in the old mgoblog version, you couldn't page down the thread titles easily. So it became very important to limit the number of threads. That no longer is the case, so I would much prefer that there be a plethora of threads. Snowflake threads? Not a fan.

The problem is that not everyone's thoughts on games are necessarily original or special or really worthy of individual consideration in this sense, but trust me, it makes moderation so much easier. It's about working smart, not working hard, and in the scenario you describe, having to peruse all the postgame bullshit in potentially dozens upon dozens of threads? Well, you'd have to find someone else with a death wish because it wouldn't be me, and they are already shorthanded in the mod department as it is.
