Snowflake Thread: QB Redshirts

Let Speight mop up this year, RS next year, bust out year after?
RS Morris, allow him to compete with O'Korn next year with 2 years eligibility?

Interesting...

I don't think there's that much strategy in it.  I think Harbaugh will play the best QB regardless of class, and if Shane isn't the #2, it may be in his best interest to transfer if he wants to play.  And I doubt he's the only one in that situation.  With so many QBs on the roster, its only a matter of time before they start transferring out.

And that's a big IF...he redshirts.

And IF he's on track to graduate in May.

He could compete with O'Korn and if he lost...he could grad transfer and have 2 years of eligibility AND not sit out a year. Or if he wins...then 2 years at Michigan.

Smart move IF.

For Shane, RS would be a win/win if he on track to graduate early.

He can compete for the starting position in the spring and if he loses, he can just transfer and play two years for the new team. If he wins the starting job, he has two years as a starting QB under Harbaugh to get ready for NFL.

If Harbaugh offered RS, I would take it if I was Morris.

Devil's advocate - Shane might not have a future at UM and Harbaugh is not going to destroy 1 more year of his career if he transfers and allow him 2 yrs somewhere else.

Not saying that is the case but saying we hhave no idea what the case is.

Morris redshirt? I have a feeling they would have put Morris, if they needed a QB for extended period of time. With victory formation, what is the point. I take this as a positive on Morris. They don't want to blow his potential RS. So, they still value Morris. I don't know if I am reading too much into it.

We will know next week. We should be having backups play most of the second half. We will see.

It was a chance for Speight to see the field. There's no reason to put Morris out there for that if he was truly contending to start. I'd be shocked if they have any plans to redshirt Morris. I'd bet anything that if Rudock had to come out for one play early in the game, Morris would have come in.

Speight ready used his redshirt year last season. That's the only problem with your theory, which isn't exactly a bad theory. Unless Rudock goes down with an injury, then Morris would almost assuredly have that opportunity to redshirt burned.

That was the first thing that came to mind. The coaching staff must like his potential to compete for a starting job these next 2 years. But I guess we'll find out more next week.

It's a good idea, and if that is what's really going on, I would like to applaud Shane Morris to the high heavens. To go from presumptive leader of the offense during the spring and aummer conditioning, to competing for the starting job in camp, to being asked to redshirt and going along with it... He's a better man than me if that's the case. That shows a damn high level of commitment and selflessness.

I mean, if he wants to try and make a living playing football, it's just smart for him. Maybe Harbaugh sat him down and said 'You're number 2. You have the option of playing mop-up duty or we can try and redshirt you and you get to try and win the job maybe get 2 years starting'. I would take the RS if I were Morris as well. And it's better for UM as well.

I know it makes sense. But you might be surprised how few players care about how much sense it makes for them not to be on the field. The field is everything. This same situation has happened to hundreds of kids, but almost all of them get pissed off and transfer, even if that isn't the best decision. You prepare all year and bust ass all week in case the starter gets hurt while knowing everyone hopes you don't have to play so that you might in the future? That's tough, and takes a ton of selflessness and commitment to the team.

Might want to look at the last play of the game. Speight came in for the hand off but Morris took the knee to end the game. I'm not 100 % sure, if someone could check on that please.

Actually you are completely off base. There is absolutely no consensus that he has the tools or physical abilities to be a great player. He was given a 5 star rating based on being a 15 yr old who had a great season and a very big arm. He barely played after that and showed no development whatsoever. He had poor performance after poor performance in camps leading up to college and hasn't showed anything so far since being here. I'm not knocking the kid but people are still living off the hype of a 16 yr old who never grew into the potential player the sites thought he'd be. It's just a fact, there are thousands of Shane Morris' who never made it as a player, he's gonna be fine and will probably be a very successful something someday just not a QB

You both are kinda right.

An extra year under Harbaugh WILL help him.  Probably not in AA though.  If he graduates as expected he would be able to transfer with having two season of elligability.  A guy with his arm, mobility & a year with Harbaugh he would get some interest.  A couple years with a MAC team, or another non Power-5 conference team that loves to throw bombs might not be a bad thing for him.

Grady was completely misused. He should have been a star. Maybe the Lions should sign him. He'd show how it was just Fred Jackson not being able to coach. I know he's got it!

(THAT is how you do sarcasm. It is a damn shame though... Maybe he was used too much in High school.)
