Snap review: The new ESPN Scoreboard crew is horrible. Depressing.
I know there are tons of ESPN haters in the board who hate all programming there except for the actual games, and that's cool. But when it comes to college football, my favorite thing besides the game itself is College Gameday, despite it's many flaws, Chris Fowler I think was great, and the chemistry with the crew was enjoyable and entertaining, despite again several flaws. I also enjoyed College Scorecard, which is the show where Rece Davis, Lou Holtz and Mark May showed and discussed all the highlights. Mark May is an ass, and Holtz was way past his prime, but to me, the show was entertaining, and they did a good job, especially Davis, with highlights--I used it Sunday mornings to catch up on the late games and others I couldn't watch.
That's why it's depressing to see the new Scoreboard crew--Adnan Kirk, Joey Galloway, and Danny Kannell. They are currently on right now doing pre-game. They are literally awful. Kirk has no chemistry or personality, same for Kannell, and Galloway, just like May, is an ass--except he also has, unike May, zero presence on camera. Say what you want for the old crew, they were watchable and had chemistry with each other. This crew is unwatchable, and the first thing you think when you watch them for a couple minutes is "this must be ESPN 8, the ocho." Ugh, watching highlights late night Saturday will be intolerable.

Steve Smith and Skip are way worse than Joey Galloway. That is saying alot about steve and skip not so much about Galloway

True, but those daytime banter shows are easier to ignore. College football stuff just comes with some of these other guys, unfortunately.

If you liked Lou Holtz and Mark May you're beyond help.

between "this show is an intelligent take on football with men whose opinions I respect greatly," and "this is pretty good tv." The latter is the case with the old crew--I believe I said in the OP that May was an ass. An ass that at least was a personality on camera.

"the show was entertaining" - Can't help you.

You've judged me on an opinion about a tv show. Cool.

I actually disagree. The last crew was entertaining in the same way that it's entertaining to watch a train wreck, but not because they provided any useful insight. Obviously Fowler is/was great, but May and Holtz are/were horrid. Also, anyone who has paid attention to Adnan Virk* knows he is full of personality and a great show host and facilitator. He's actually pretty funny and always has smart takes. Kannell can rub people the wrong way, but is truly a great college football analyst. He's been there at the highest level, but also is quite down to earth. Galloway on the other hand...I got nothin. He is Mark May 2.

That was my point, they provided no useful insight but had chemistry and presence. I see none of that in this crew, but hope you are right about Virk.

I've said this before: I think Brady Hoke is John Madden "lite." He doesn't have the same level of accomplishments, but he's a textbook "everyman" in personality, which I think would fly very well with most listeners. I think it also contributed to one of his relative strengths as a coach (recruiting).

Is the worst on ESPN.
Not an OSU thing, I'm okay with Herbie...Speilman is fine. Galloway is the WORST.
Kannel would be fine but he can't carry it and Virk can't host it.
They need a coach on it.

Yeah I'd rather lose college football forever than watch/listen to May and Holtz talk about it. I always wondered what Rece Davis did to deserve that gig.

Whoever's on these shows will not be given game responsibilities, which means I can choose never to hear them. If they'd put Rod Gilmore on here alongside Galloway I'd be mighty happy.

I watch Baseball Tonight on ESPN2 most nights. That is a rather analytical show and it works. Because the people who care enough to watch an hour-long MLB highlight show tend to be geeky analytical types who know the ins-and-outs of all 30 MLB teams.
Now, college football. God bless the people who like the analytical aspect of it, but they are clearly outnumbered by the "God, Country, and (insert your school here) football" fans out there. People who care about college football and are passionate about it love it in a different way than NBA fans or MLB fans or Golf fans care about their sports.
May and Holtz trolled, they pissed people off, and they rarely, if ever, used logic to support their arguments. Fine. But those are traits that MANY college football fans have themselves!! That's the way in which they were "perfect."
Strange as it sounds, I'm going to miss May and Holtz.

Right up there with the terms "spread" and "pro style" offense

analytical: relating to or using analysis or logical reasoning
analytics: the systematic computational analysis of data or statistics
You can be analytical without using analytics; he used the correct word.

from ESPN. I only watch games (a lot of times on mute because of the commentating) and no pre-game, half times or post games. And NO SPORTSCENTER. It's like cutting the cord on cable. It seems difficult, but when you do it you feel relieved.
