SIAP: Exit Scott Turner

Submitted by ChalmersE on
Offensive Analyst Scott Turner is headed to the Carolina Panthers where he will work under his father Norv Turner who’s the Offensive Coordinator there. Also there’s news (noise?) that Hamilton is headed to the Raiders.

While that certainly factored in, I got the sense that we were trying to run a lot of NFL passing concepts (option routes, lot more 5 wide WR than usual) despite the fact that our receivers were young, we had a revolving QB position, and the O-Line couldn't pass protect.  If you know those things and keep running the offense the same way, that is a coordinator/coaching issue.

Look what happened when Peters started - the offense HAD to be simplified, we ran the ball a lot and basically beat 3 not so great teams by near identical scores.  Wisconsin was hard to judge since Peters got hurt, but again in the OSU game our terrible O-line went up against the best D line in CFB and most of the sacks they gave up were just the QB holding the ball too long.  In other words, we actually had a gameplan our players could execute (except for the QB, sigh).

Fast forward to the Bowl game and it looks like the whole playbook is "in play" now for Peters and he has a terrible game.  Just the stark contrast between the OSU and USC games has to say something about gameplanning and playcalling.

To your original point, I don't agree with people that think Fisch coming back fixes everything because he was never the coach when we were heavily short on experience - there is no evidence to suggest he would have done better this year.  There IS evidence to suggest our playcalling and gameplanning this year was a roller coaster of good and bad, which IMO has to be partially on Pep/Drev.

So we (the Michigan fanbase) blame a guy that John Gruden (hero of heroes) wants to hire for our woes?

The collective Michigan fanbase is toxic.
