SI: Don Brown is Top Coordinator Hire of Off-Season

Submitted by BursleyHall82 on

Sports Illustrated ranked the top 10 coordinator hires of the off-season, and they loves them some Don Brown.

"Michigan finished with the fifth-best total defense in the country in 2015 under now-Maryland head coach D.J Durkin. How do the Wolverines plan to get better? By hiring the coordinator who oversaw the nation’s No. 1 defense."

No Schiano for Ohio State on the list.  This makes me smile.

Less surprising is that Hoke didn't make the list.  I wish him well, but it remains to be seen how he will do as a coordinator.

I will be watching Oregon's defensive performance with great interest this season. I'm not a big fan of Hoke, so it won't take much to push me into the "he's bad" camp, and good results will be taken with a grain of salt. Confirmation bias level: exactly what I was expecting :)

You won't really take any good results Hoke has "with a grain of salt" - you'll be pissed and disike him even more...

How do I know this? You post on Mgoblog!

If you like someone, no amount of contrary evidence will sway your opinion.

If you don't, no successes will convince you, no failure will go uncelebrated.

That's just who we are... I've accepted it. I think that's one of the steps?

Remember when him sealing the deal for Rashan Gary was a thing in December?  They did get Fuller but he was probably going to OSU anyway.  He really didn't do much for their recruiting at the end of the day and he'll probably be gone when he gets any head coaching offer.

Some nice validation heading into weekend about what many here said about this being a great hire for Michigan.  Also validates views expressed on the blog  that Wisky lost a terrific coordinator in Dave Aranda, who went to LSU  (listed as # 2 hire in article)

I was among those who were actually rather excited about the Don Brown hire from the start basically, and for some of the reasons SI mentions - you're augmenting an already excellent defense by getting the coordinator who ran the best one in the country last year. Even more exciting is that he walks into a situation with most of the tools - aside from maybe the linebacker questions - to turn excellent into potentially unreal over time. Yes, the next several years could be fun years.

Going into last season the LBs were generally considered the strongest unit of our defense. Here's one example. http://mgoblog.com/content/preview-2015-linebacker

I think a fair question is whether our defensive scheme asked our LBs to do too much, or at least some things they weren't capable of doing well.. They may may have looked like a weak link, but the same scheme with backups playing extended minutes may have been disastrous.

Going into last season, they were a strength. But the linebackers got exposed as the defensive line wore down with injuries. IMO the d-line covered up for the fact that the linebacker play was quite poor in a lot of ways. Really, we are only talking about Morgan and Bolden. Morgan usually was in good position but limited by a lack of natural athleticism. Bolden, well, just wasn't very good. Had trouble coming off blocks and took poor angles. He was a frustrating player.

I tend to think the d-line will continue to mask M's holes at LB play next season, but it'd be nice to see some players establish themselves.

I'm going full-koolaid this year*. I think I'm going to be surprised if any one team scores more than 14 points on us in September (Hawaii, UCF, Colorado, PSU).

*Like every year, but this year I believe it

Very telling is the 2 SEC teams who hired B1G DCs to the same position but offered to pay a lot more.  If teams don't offer compensation close to what the SEC is, they won't be able to keep good coaches.  I think $1.3 million for a DC is excessive, but that seems to be the going rate in the SEC these days.  Even Michigan and OSU aren't paying over a million for any assistant coach.
