Shane Morris Article in the Daily

Submitted by nmumike on

Good read on Shane Morris and his time here.

"As college has gone on, you kind of learn to put things in front of yourself and not make yourself the most important,” Morris said. “Kind of realize you’ve got other things that are way more important, like other people. … I feel like I’ve done that. I’ve become a much happier person, enjoying life and really taking in all it has to offer.”

I really wish it worked out for Shane. The guy loves Michigan and had much potential. If he had Harbaugh from the start, I feel as if he would have been the guy.

Would he? He had some epic performances as a QB in 2013 (Notre Dame, Indiana, Ohio State), despite poor O-line play. He regressed when Nussmeier took over. He was also voted captain by his teammates in 2014. I think he would have had as good a shot as anyone if he was coached by Harbaugh from the get go.

lol exactly! That was my thought. Does Andrew Luck magically regain eligibility and come to Michigan? OK well then I guess Luck would be the QB.

Do people keep forgetting Harbaugh likes more mobility in his QBs? Hell, it seems that's why he tried out the Morris and O'Korn packages last week.

Another Big Ten Head Coach said something anonymousy about Devin Gardner when they asked him last year.  I'm paraphrasing but it was something like this:

"I don't know what they were coaching him up there, but that kid should have been a major star and a top NFL pick.   He has all of the tools."

I mostly agree, but he's not done yet.  This coaching staff is top-notch, and as they teased last week, if they can get an advantage by having a special package for Shane, they will use it.  He may yet play a role in wining a big game for M.

I hope he goes someplace he can start for a fifth year.  He will have his Michigan degree and the undying gratitude of alums.  That will take him a long way in the business or coaching world.  A year of actually being able to play QB while getting some grad school credits would be perfect for him.

I agree.  If hope Shane transfers to another school for his grad year and absolutely lights it up.  In the interim, I hope he gets on the field this year for some specialty plays and throws a couple TD's.

Quality kid.... I mean young man.  He's a credit to this team and the university.

and he's leading the Badger offense when UM plays in Madison on Nov 18, 2017, will you feel the same way?

Just askin'.

I don't see him as a fit for Oregon; Wisky is the most likely destination, if Shane decides to go that route.  I wish him the best, except against UM.

Kid has had a tough ride, and it didn't work out like he wanted, but sometimes life does that to you. He has a good attitude, and we should all wish him the very best!

Wish nothing but the best for Shane in all future endeavors. The future looked bright when he committed, unfortunately the cloud of DB hung heavy over the program and definitely limited the growth and progress of the program and players.

Good attitude. Those who stay will be champions in one way or another. Glad he suck around for his degree. Kinda lament the non Harbaugh hire though back in 2010/11. Imagine as QBs go, imagine a fully utilized Denard (scheme wise) then Gardner in 2013/14, then possibiy no JOK or Rudock transfer in because Morris is in starting form for 15/16 with Speight as capable back up. 2017 Speight possibly gets his starting role if Peters is still developing. Anyway, seems like Morris has dealt with disappointment/expectations better than I would have. Good for him.

Of Harbaugh came here after RichRod, he would never have coached in the NFL. He may have ended up leaving after a few years to pursue NFL glory. But now, since he's already had that experience, he may be more likely to stay the rest of his career (or at least longer than he might have).

purely speculative but worth noting.

No way. Didn't you read the PennLive article? Annoyed that he is the fourth-best coach in his own division (behind Franklin, Meyer, D'Antonio - in that order), Harbaugh is leaving for the Colts. He is so competitive he has to win a Super Bowl to match his brother, he doesn't like recruiting, his wife hates the cold weather, yada yada.

I'll always have a soft spot for Shane, because I always have a soft spot for guys who bleed Maize and Blue. He's always been the guy I've been rooting for in these QB battles, because he's the guy I identify with. I grew up wishing I could play football for the University of Michigan, just like he did. I always tell myself that if I had been an elite football player, that I would never have gone anywhere but Michigan. You see lots of stories of guys who say they grew up rooting for Michigan, but then go somewhere else (which may indeed be the best decision for them), so when a guy sticks it out, when he does what you think you would do too, just because you love Michigan... How can you not root for him?

I remember watching an interview of Shane when he was still at De La Salle High School. Something that has stuck in my mind through his career is something that he said in that interview. He talked about his senior year at De La Salle and that his goal for the year was to win the state championship with his teammates. And while that sounds cliche and like something that all top high school recruits share, it's what he said after. When asked about his Michigan career, he said (paraphrasing) "It doesn't matter if I'm an All American or if I never throw for a touchdown for Michigan. I'm going to do my best to be a good teammate and put our team in a position to win."

And here we are in his senior year and he's never thrown or run for a touchdown. But he has stuck with Michigan in some of the worst of times and he's kept his promise of being a good teammate.

Here's to Shane getting that ball across the goal line!

is not over yet at Michigan.  It's a long season and a lot can happen.  And, with another year of eligibility left his number may still get called.  The humility he seems to have now will serve him well in life and may become the difference maker still as a Michigan QB.  It would not surprise me if Harbaugh doesn't have something up his sleeve with using Shane.  I'll be pulling for him.

That was a great read. I've always been pulling for the guy. Harbaugh's clearly willing to put him on the field and is going to use him this year some in non mop-up, I bet. I'd be a bit surprised if he walked away from a 5th year at Michigan, and a 3rd year under Harbaugh.

I don't think he'll walk away from it (a 5th year).  But I don't know if he'll earn it.  5th years must be earned under Harbaugh, and I simply don't know what the standard is for a QB that isn't likely to see the field much.  Face it, he's 3rd on the chart behind Speight and O'Korn.  And he'll still be behind them next year.  And with Peter's coming off his redshirt, will Morris even be 3rd next year?  Probably, but will that be enough to keep his scholarship?  I don't think any of us know that answer.

In saying this, I am not picking on him, or down on him.  I echo the sentiments of everyone else that is happy for him and wishes him well.  I'd LOVE to see him score a TD at some point this year.  Hopefully, in a meaningful manner, rather than some mop of duty against a scrub team.  (But not at the expense of forced playing time due to injury or poor play!)

I simply don't know what Harbaugh expects from a 5th yr QB, when 5th years are not just handed out.

I think he will pack it in after this year. I'm sure he is close to graduating. I see him as a Grad transfer somewhere. He is not going to get a chance to get any meaningful snaps here. As you said, jimmy may not grant him a fifth. Go and play. You never know...he could have a breakout year for another program.
