Shane holding his own?

Fogive me if this isn't relevant (as it is a tweet of an opinion of a person who knew of a friend that saw) and oh this is my first post so i get a mulligan if i shank it ..

But according to Gregg Henson the battle is going strong, and looks like Morris is leading

We'll see if it stays that way. Morris has had all year to learn the playbook and Rudock has likely had a few weeks.

Not that Morris should be faulted for that, but this doesn't necessarily mean that Morris is head and shoulders above Rudock. Personally I don't care who plays, as long as they win football games.

I think you're overplaying the differences in learning time here.  Rudock likely had the playbook as soon as the transfer was complete and arrived in the summer for off season workouts and 7-on-7.  Shane's really only had the spring season extra.  While not insignificant, I think Rudock's two extra years of starting in the B1G kind of make up for that.

an awful OL last season with subpar WRs (and Funchess was loafing/ hurt). He was also not correctly prepared.

Hell, Devin Gardner looked awful last year because his supporting cast was so bad. I don't know how anybody can deduce anything about Morris' potential/ performance based on last season.

Let's not forget that last year Morris was on his second coordinator in two years. It is not like he had consistently good coaching those two years either.  He may still be improving which may be hard for many on here to believe.

I'm surprised, but not totally.  While I think Rudock gets the start, I'm rooting for Morris because he has a much higher ceiling.  And who knows, with some proper coaching and the right motivation, maybe the lightbulb clicks for Morris this year.  And for those saying that Morris should look better at this point...come on.  This is a new system for Morris as well.  He's had 15 extra practices, but Rudock has a ton more game exeperience and they've both been around for off-season 7-on-7 stuff.

Gregg Henson is the journalism version of Shane Morris.  Very talented and does a lot of things well, but man does he do some things that just make you shake your head sometimes.

Was right about the Hoke hiring, the Brandon firing, Harbaugh and Nike.  I'm not sure why anyone has a problem with him.  His website posts go back to 2009 so it would be pretty easy for someone to show that he's just making stuff up for clicks which is what everyone thought he was doing last fall with Harbaugh.

There sort of was for a while - I know, strong statement.

When we were at a point in the coaching speculation / search (so basically from early October-ish onwards until the actual Harbaugh announcement) where there were about 3-4 Henson posts a day, it seemed, he made it to the "back it up with a second source" list, not so much Valenti-like status. Was it strictly enforced? With the volume of coaching threads then, I can honesty say probably not.

At this point, it's "take it as you will" level basically.

Stuff keeps going back and forth between Ruddock and Morris in the blogosphere/social media world means a) it's good news as there must be healthy competition going on b) people really have no idea and Harbaugh is keeping the submarine guarded heavily

A few observations. One, you're not permitted to bring your own missiles aboard. Two, people do things anyway although storage is a genuine concern, so Nerf material has its advantages. Three, inevitably this hypothetical ball will almost certainly disappear and either you'll never see it again, possibly because it got launched through a torpedo tube, else it will appear in a radically different form, for example, wearing various materials such as lipstick, grenade hatchings and faux orifices; it might even serve as Neptune's hairy balls. It may experience steel beach and then it's not coming back ever unless some island vagabond finds it and renames it "Wilson."

Shane isn't even the 5th best QB on this team imho.

Rudock, O'Korn, Gentry and Malzone are all ahead of him because they haven't been ruined by the Hoke staff/weren't hand-picked or coached by Borges.

he's Russell Bellomy with a lot more recruiting hype and that sounds really harsh, but that's the reality of things.

Shane Morris == Russell Bellomy???

No offense to Bellomy but the kid looked TERRIFIED whenever he was on the field. Sure Shane doesn't always look comfortable and hasn't performed well, but he has a cannon...and doesn't look like he's a deer in headlights out there.

I just don't get where the Morris anamosity comes from with some in this fanbase?  What data do you have to say he's behind any off those guys?  This year is not last year.  While you can make a rational arguement that Rudock gets the start, Harbaugh's own words at the end of the spring torpedo you assertation.  You know that time when Harbaugh said that Morris was ahead of the other QB's by the end of spring?

DISCUSS Man

August 10th, 2015 at 2:45 PM ^

Yeah, the spring game where Rudock, O'Korn and Gentry weren't there? The one where Malzone also should've still be in at HS at the time for?

I'm going off of what I see. Morris' receivers sure weren't helping him out in that game and he still didn't look like a starting QB on a team that expects to win.

They've been practicing for not even a week. Morris, who has shown nothing positive in two years of play, isn't beating one of the most efficient passers in the B1G.

You are the absolute fucking worst fan. I wish you would cheer for another team. You go well beyond saying one player is better than another and you clearly have no fucking clue what you are talking about. Basing the upcoming year on 3 starts in a true freshman and true sophomore season is just stupid. Your "analysis" is awful and you are over-the-top in your hate for Morris because I'm assuming he slept with someone you know. Also, your signature is hilarious with all the bitching you do about Morris

DISCUSS Man

August 10th, 2015 at 6:47 PM ^

He had 2 starts. One in 2013 and one in 2014. Both horrific showings.

Get the facts right before you call ME a bad fan, you dumb motherfucker. How dare you call me a bad fan for voicing an opinion where I did not personally bash or take personal shots at Shane Morris. I commented on his on-field performance.

If you can't handle someone's play being criticized, go watch pee wee football or something.

BigBlue02

August 10th, 2015 at 7:00 PM ^

Pointing out that he had 2 starts instead of 3, his first as a true freshman in a bowl game, doesn't help your case. And he wasn't horrific in the bowl game. I'm not sure what you were watching. But your problem isn't that you shouldn't be allowed to have an opinion, it's that your opinion is based on nothing really. You said the reality is that he isn't even 5th best QB. So you put 2 freshmen who have no game experience ahead of him as well as a mystery 5th QB. This is talking out of your ass. you are uninformed and say things as if they are fact. It is why no one really gives two shits what you think

He means no one cares what you think in terms of your thinking having the ability to influence anyone else's thinking. That doesn't mean that dumb thinking isn't worth refuting or blasting once it's been put out in public for all to see and it doesn't mean unfairly harsh and insulting words toward a loyal Michigan man with great abilities & a great attitude in the face of his whole history here will piss some people off even if they think you're an idiot. You might even engender DISGUST, Man.

Coming out of spring, Harbaugh essentially said that Morris was the leader for the starting spot. so you're...wrong.

Morris may lose the starting spot to Rudock by the start of the season, but stating definitively that he's the 5th best QB on this roster is just dopey.

But i just dont understand how anyone can NOT root for Shane?!

if he isnt the best qb for the team, so be it. But personally i hope he wins the job and holds it and excels.

The kid has been thru a lot and has loved Michigan his entire life, i for one am rooting hard in his corner

While you're mentioning those off the field intangible reasons to root for him, I've met him 3 or 4 times and he seems sincerely nice, respectful & good natured, just likeable.

Fwiw, for all the "it's only the first day" people, both Scout and Rivals had VIP pieces over the past few days saying that Shane has reportedly made really big strides over the summer. Scout's guy said he now expects Shane to start the opener...Rivals didn't go quite that far, but iirc they are thinking the competition will be very tight. Obviously it's way too early to declare Shane the guy, especially since He has such a head start on Rudock in terms of chemistry and knowing the playbook and etc, but "Shane's getting better" isn't just a one day thing. Personally, I very much hope Shane wins the job, given we know what sort of benchmark Rudock is setting. If Shane is past that, that would be huge given his upside.

I never played quarterback in high school or college, so I really don't know the answer to this, but:

It's obvious that Shane has a ton of talent.

Only, he's never been able to put it together (go back to high school when he was at one point in time a five star - his stats were terrible).

Can one offseason of Harbaugh magically turn him into a good quarterback?  Or has he learned so many bad traits from his high school coach / Hoke's staff that he's essentially rendered damaged goods?

Honest question, because 'Harbaugh'.

Alex Smith was an absolute mess when Harbaugh got a hold of him. He has seen multiple coaching changes, was getting booed at home, and his confience was at an all time low. For Harbaugh to rehab him into an average NFL starter is nothing short of miraculous considering players with that type of career start end up fading away fast. If Morris has the work ethic and determination Harbaugh can get him to fulfill his potential.

Rafi

August 10th, 2015 at 2:56 PM ^

Huh?  The same Harbaugh that benched him in favor of Kaep?

Smith was something like the #1 overall pick and threw 32 TDs against 4 INTs his Junior Year at Utah.

He is literally a terrible example for an answer to my question.  Terrible.

GotBlueOnMyMind

August 10th, 2015 at 3:17 PM ^

You're focusing on his college performance (which led to his draft spot), and forgetting about his pro performance prior to Harbaugh. Smith, in the pros, was a tire fire before Harbaugh got there. So, there is a legitimate comparison between Smith as a pro and Morris as a college player. Also, regarding Smith getting benched for Kaep: the fact that there was another guy on the roster who ended up being better does not negate the fact that Harbaugh turned around Smith's career.

Alex Smith "tire fire" pre Harbaugh:

57% completeions (774/1514), 9399 yards, 51TD, 53INT

NFL QB rating: 67

NCAA QB rating: 107

Shane Morris college career:

49% completions (43/87), 381 yards, 0TD, 5INT

NFL QB rating: 37

NCAA QB rating: 74

Shane Morris has been significantly worse so far in college than "tire fire" Alex Smith was in the pros pre-Harbaugh.
