College football is my favorite thing in sports, followed by March Madness as a close second. I can't believe we will have neither in 2020. Hopefully we are all rewarded in 2021 for our sports fandom patience. Stay safe everyone and go blue.

Rewarded?

When we as a nation deserve to be rewarded, we will be.

We are getting exactly what we deserve for our handling of this pandemic

Had we taken it seriously like our european counterparts and not politicized a freaking pandemic, we would be getting ready for sports just like they are

I prefer to look at the worst case scenario as a time shift to the spring where we will play a 12 game schedule  with a full stadium and our late season games will require sunscreen.

For you car guys in attendance looking for something live to watch, there is an F1 race from Austria on tomorrow at 9:00 AM EDT on ESPN.  Qualifying today was in the rain (they race in the rain in F1) and it was wild.

Taken it seriously like our European counterparts?  Have you looked at the death rates in most European countries?   Most are worse than ours.  I don't think many there took it seriously enough. Maybe a better comparison would be South Korea, Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Australia or a few select European countries like Norway.  But yeah, many here were cavalier after the first wave hit the East coast the hardest initially and now we are seeing a spike after many here decided large gatherings were good ideas and wearing face masks was too inconvenient.

Most EU countries (UK at 279/km^2, Italy at 201/km^2 and France at  118) have much higher population densities than the U.S. (35/km^2).

Also the average age in most EU countries is higher than the U.S.

So the higher death rates should be expected.

But the arc of the pandemic has been remarkably different in hospitalizations and deaths. Even bubbling Boris in the UK has fallen backwards into managing this better than the U.S.. (At least for now. The number of packed pubs these last couple of weeks is a bad sign of what's to come.)

The U.S. lack of coordination at the state and federal levels + election year politics + the gaslighter in chief = hell

Yes. Thanks a lot ice cream Nancy. We should have shut everything in March. It was tried but racism came into play and cries of supremacy from Obiden.  And the medical leaders are also to blame although the blame target lies with China.

Lots of mistakes and the data shows its was mainly in liberal cities and states. The same corrupt, crime ridden & murder ridden, poorly educated, baby killing, and human trafficking dens of inequity.

Holy shit you're a moron.

The surge happened not because of protests, but because people couldn't be bothered to follow the freaking rules, stay six feet apart, wear a mask, and not linger in bars. And it's surging not in liberal states, but states headed by Republican governors like Florida and Texas who were more eager to open their states up than protect their residents.

The looters and rioters were wearing masks for a different reason. Protesters not so much. No Goya on the shelf.  There was nothing on the shelf. This country has a problem and it’s not the coronavirus. Let’s boycott a company because the ceo said something positive about our president. Politicians are supporting boycotting a company with a Spanish ceo. Virus is the least of my concern. Sports are not that important.

You might want to try watching something other than CNN.  Would you have been fine if a group on the right was out there protesting something like the dismantling of the 2nd amendment?  I'm sure CNN would have said "they're showing great discipling keeping 6 feet apart and wearing masks 100% of the time."  Laughable.  I cant eat a meal at a restaurant, but I sure as hell can protest with thousands of people (only if what they're protesting aligns with left wing doctrine).

Better check the numbers in Gavin (I want to bang your wife) Newsome's state.  Kind of a liberal shithole the last time I checked.  Maybe ole Gav is busy picking up Nancy's districts dog shit piles on the streets of San Francisco (is that a conservative city - I forget?).

What? Trump’s “way-too-late” half-assed travel restriction placed only upon Chinese nationals? Alongside ZERO restrictions placed upon travelers from Europe where the virus was also raging?? You realize an American National could have traveled to a hotbed within China and retuned with absolutely no problem, right??. As if a respiratory virus gives a shit what race or nationality a person is. Racism came into play because his pathetic travel restriction was absolutely racist and Donald Trump has proven himself to be a racist a million times over.

Good things it’s primarily “liberal” states like Texas, Arizona and Florida where the virus is spiking.

oh, wait

Jesus Christ tell me you aren’t really that fucking stupid and out of touch with reality.

What was Nancy's and the leftist response to the Trump's travel ban I forget?  She still dancing in China Town while trying to avoid the shit piles on her streets of San Francisco?  I'm guessing the plight of that once great town is Trump's fault too?  Can you imagine the lefts reaction if Trump had gone further with the travel ban?  Classic.

That album is amazing.  Meddle and Obscured By Clouds have some moments, but then then boom:  Dark Side, Wish You Were Here, Animals and The Wall all in a 7-year eruption of brilliance that tore the band apart.

Sorry - carry on...

There seems to be an 'eruption of brilliance' that tears most bands apart.  Drinking, drugs, and women do them all in after some period of serious fame.  Led Zepp, Eagles, Journey, Van Halen, Kiss, etc...  Plenty make it for the long haul, but more often than not they tear themselves apart.

Sankey said. "But the direct reality is not good and the notion that we've politicized medical guidance of distancing, and breathing masks, and hand sanitization, ventilation of being outside, being careful where you are in buildings.”

Recent study published in Lancet shows wearing a simple mask can reduce transmission by over 5 fold ... covid positive person infecting 17 people per 100 interactions vs 3 people per 100 interactions with a mask on

People need to stop being whiny bitches and just wear masks

But no people are stupid ... be safe, hold on ... they’ll kill themselves off

EDIT:  this was supposed to be in response to your comment below regarding young people and masks but .... I suck at the internet so ... there ya go

Yeah but some dickheads will always scream “TYRANNY!” or find the one study out of every 5000 that questions the effectiveness of wearing masks and say they’re “not sure” about the science behind it.

Hell, there are two stories out today about COVID deniers who just died recently. One was a 38 year old guy in Ohio who repeatedly posted that he wasn’t going to fall for hype and wear a fucking mask and then went to a big bash at Put In Bay in mid June. Another about a 30 year old guy Texas who went to a COVID party, where they took bets on who would get infected first, a few weeks ago.

The Ohio guy spent the last few days posting how gasping for breath was an intensely painful experience and the Texas one told a nurse at the hospital “I think I made a mistake. I thought it was a hoax.”

To borrow from Lord of the Rings: “What can men do against such reckless dumbfuckery?”

Bill22

July 12th, 2020 at 1:06 AM ^

Those stories are actually really sad.  I can’t help but think if we had a consistent message coming from Washington that stressed the seriousness of this pandemic, rather than calling it a hoax that “isn’t serious in 99% of cases,” both of those guys would be alive.

Actually the stats show they won’t. Few people want to talk about that point though. The headlines are all about the “surge” or “spike” in cases and not about the 0.5% mortality rate which is highly but not entirely composed of comorbidities.

I’m fine with wearing a mask for now, and I do when I go out. I’m happy to put others before myself and I do choose to do so in this way. I just can’t buy the doom and gloom headlines though based on the present data.

I also don’t understand what the end game is. It started as flatten the curve which we did, then find some treatments which we found a few promising ones, and doctors have learned how to better treat the disease. There are possible vaccines in the chain but there is no guarantee one that is safe and effective will ever be made. So now we live in a “we should distance/shutdown/isolate until ...? “ world.

2 things

1. Get the fuck outta here with the whole low mortality rate being the be all end all, nonsense. Just because a person doesn’t die it doesn’t mean they don’t go through a horrific experience that could very well leave them with serious complications, sometimes for life. This “If they don’t die, they’re fine” is some of the most disingenuous and callous bullshit around.

2. The cases have only started spiking into the 50000+ daily range over the last few days. It generally takes a week or two for the deaths to start spiking as well. Let’s see where things are a few weeks from now in terms of mortality.

ijohnb

July 11th, 2020 at 8:35 PM ^

So essentially, let’s wait two weeks before we decide what to do or not to do based on mortality rate, AND, it doesn’t matter if the mortality rate is super low because restrictions should remain regardless of what the mortality rate it.

Got it.  Good to know that the answer to the above posters question is actually “forever” in your mind.  People oppose masks because nothing will ever be enough, every concession of freedom is met with another restriction.  You can already find the “a vaccine will not end the coronavirus” and “expect restrictions to continue after vaccine” articles all over the place.  Laying the ground work.

Edit - this type of shit is not me.  I’m done engaging in it.  All of this sucks.  I comply with restrictions and I will continue to, I just feel like we have forfeited more than we will ever get back.  I genuinely don’t think I am out on a limb and think it will have lasting repercussions in terms of our way of life and the existence and freedoms of future generations.  But I could be wrong.  I wish you well.  Honestly, I’m done.  Take care.

Fine, agree to disagree. I Think you just need to realize that we’ve had situations before like WWII and 9/11 where things were done by the government that everyone thought would start us down the path to losing our freedoms. We muddled through somehow and we’ll get through this with our freedoms intact.

And I don’t wish it on anyone. I had a bad pneumonia bout in 2009 that put me in the hospital and I can honestly say it was the more horrific feeling I’ve ever experienced; And I wasn’t even bad enough to be on a vent, I can’t even imagine what that would be like. Staying safe is totally worth the effort.

Fair enough.  A lot of the give and take here has become incredibly childish.  My last response being a prime example.  That was dumb.  I don’t know everything, and perhaps I am way off base in terms of my perspective on this.  And maybe it is time I start to take in some news ideas about all of it, and just listen.

Honestly, I wish you well.  I am guessing that for all the shit people talk on here, we actually don’t “act” that much different from each other in actual reality.  I’m going to stay in the back seat on all of this from now on.

Until we are in a place we don’t have to worry about hospitals getting overwhelmed,

“HOUSTON — Houston hospitals have been forced to treat hundreds of COVID-19 patients in their emergency rooms — sometimes for several hours or multiple days — as they scramble to open additional intensive care beds for the wave of seriously ill people streaming through their doors, according to internal numbers shared with NBC News and ProPublica.

At the same time, the region’s 12 busiest hospitals are increasingly telling emergency responders that they cannot safely accept new patients, at a rate nearly three times that of a year ago, according to data reviewed by reporters.”
