Scouting Report: Patrick Kugler
Since there wasn't much video available on Patrick Kugler when he committed, I held off on giving any TTB Rating. Now that a twelve-minute highlight film appeared on the internet, I decided to devote this week's scouting report to Kugler. Overall, I think he's a very good prospect who reminds me of the mauling linemen of the 1990's/early 2000's at Michigan. I don't think we've seen a center like him for many years; Molk is a very good player, but a different type of lineman.
is a guard, the number 1 rated guard to scout,he's needed at center though.I think he could play guard down the road again.GO BLUE!!!
I like that about him.
What I find highly-larious is how people are telling Magnus how to do his evaluations. He shouldn't include this or he should include that. He thinks lesser of a recruit than one recruiting site and therefore he's wrong or a pessimist.
I think people have an issue with someone writing disparagingly of a 16 year old as, "keeping it real". There are words in the English language like, tact, circumspect, judicious, prudent, for a reason. You can point out a person's limitations without coming off as a dick, sometimes it isn't easy buy it is possible. It is especially possible when you think the kid is worthy of the offer and you are glad he is part of the team
Magnus' issue is he is not good at conveying his overall point, his explanatory skills are lacking. He freely admits he had no problems with an offer going out to Logan TT, and he would have offered LTT himself, just like Nick Saban, Brady Hoke and a cast of thousands. But when you read Magnus' evals, you don't get the vibe that Magnus would have offered the kid.
Overall for my taste, it seems it becomes too personal for Magnus, he routinely rips on recruits and players on the M football team, and then defends his attacks to the bitter end.
Yes I am aware they are big boys and they should be able to handle the criticism, yada yada yada, but Magnus is a big boy as well and he should be able to articulate himself clearly and with respect to the young men who represent the school he loves and attended.
The evaluations aren't about whether I would have offered him or not. The evaluations are about pointing out a player's strengths and weaknesses and projecting him forward. People like you want soft-hearted evaluations like "He could work on technique." Well, yippee. Anybody can say "He needs to get bigger." But when it comes down to it, some of these kids have A LOT to work on. But you don't want to hear that. You just want to read the good stuff. Which is fine, but that's not what my website is about. If I wanted to write the same fluff that Rivals writes on a regular basis, I would have applied for Tim Sullivan's job.
IMO, you don't get it and you don't get that you don't get it.
I'm fully capable of understanding your not-hard-to-understand point. I disagree. If you think that by disagreeing, I "don't get it and don't get that I don't get it," then that's your prerogative. I'm not going to lose any sleep over it.
But if you don't like his style, can't you just not read it? Not everything is for everyone. Some people think Magnus is too harsh. Others think it's refreshing to read a more honest review, and not "So and so committed to Michigan, and because Michigan wanted him, he's awesome so we're all excited." Some guys that commit to Michigan are really awesome, and some are kinda awesome, and I like to hear who is whom and why.
Some poeple like MGoBoard because it is a level-headed, balanced, well moderated forum. Other people want to be able to say $partina and O$U and some ND-equivalent without it being a problem, so they go elsewhere. If it's not your cup of tea, don't drink it.
