Some of you may remember Scott played hockey at UofM from 1997-2001. He has been diagonsed with ALS and he and his family have an uphil battle in front of them. Please visit his website and see how you can help. Also stay tuned as a benefit game/Matzka night may happen in October at Yost vs NY Union one of the nights.

Thank you

Insurance companies routinely deny claims for expensive chronic care, especially if the person is terminal. They just deem the care to be not medically necessary, then wait for the family of a dying person to hire a lawyer and fight. With ALS, Congress changed the rules to allow immediate Medicare eligibility for ALS patients when they become SSDI eligible (normally you have to wait 2 years). So a private insurer can just stall and wait for the beneficiary to become disabled and Medicare eligible.

Terrible to hear. My dad died of ALS and I lived with and helped take care of him through it. It was hell and the worst time of my life. I wish Scott and his family the best.

An MGoBlog ALS/Matzka fundraiser  would be awesome.

A tent/tailgate at a football game or two would be a great opportunity to bring a lot of good people together for a great cause.  I'd be willing to put a lot of work into it if Brian and/or the mods would support.

ALS took my grandfather that raised me way too soon.  I would not wish that on my worst enemy.

i do hope that his doctors have run all the tests to confirm it.  A coworker's brother was diagnosed with ALS only to find out months later it was advanced Lyme Disease which is still horrible but treatable.

Sorry Wolverine41, don't mean to threadjack (again), but don't have enough points to start my own... Big day Sunday for Scott, filmed the "Ice Bucket Challenge" in support of ALS research. Lots of friends, neighbors, and even public service participated. Just posted today on FB, I think it's one of the best IBC's I've ever seen.

Please have a look, share with others / spread the word, and most importantly encourage donations. Thanks everyone.
