Schembechler Estate Sale cancelled

Submitted by a2_electricboogaloo on

There seems to be some strange circumstances surrounding it, but according to Stephen Nesbitt and Nick Baumgardner the estate sale planned for this weekend is cancelled.

Schembechler estate sale has been canceled. Matt Schembechler said groundskeepers canceled, is trying to file an injunction and arrest Matt.

I don't know how to explain it, really—the road was blocked by security, Matt Schembechler came to my car window to vent about cancellation.

Matt Schembechler: "The man who mows the lawn" canceled the estate sale, "is trying to file an injunction against me and throw me in jail."

Owner of Aaron's Estate Sales says the sale belonged to the personal estate of Matt Schembechler, not Bo Schembechler

— Nick Baumgardner (@nickbaumgardner) September 27, 2012

And the sale has been canceled because the neighborhood association had filed to have it stopped, citing it was against their bylaws

Again, original report was wrong -- that was not a sale of Bo Schembechler's personal estate, but rather the estate of his son, Matt.

It seems pretty unlikely that anyone will go to jail because of this.  Someone may have threatened that, but I'm not aware of neighborhood association rules carrying criminal penalties.

to the estate sale around 9:30am. I had a similar experience...when I slowed up and rolled down my window, Matt Schembechler came up and started rambling about how his neighbors were trying to sue, Bo's last wife was trying to sue, and the media was trying to slander him.

It was a very weird, kind of sad sight.

He kept repeating the phrase, "this is what happens when you're the last Schembechler in Ann Arbor."

I saw the address in the MLive article and knew which homeowners association it was based on past dealings in my work with Detroit Edison. There is a very explicit clause in the bylaws (which I have on file here because I had to do some underground design back there once and needed to know what the easement situation was) which prohibits "unreasonably noisy" or "offensive" activity in the common areas as well as within or near individual units in the subdivision. Especially if it involves potential traffic congestion, vehicular or pedestrian (or, heaven forbid, line trucks, as in my case), it would have to go to the board first for approval. Failing to get such approval is a major faux pas there and in several other places in and around Ann Arbor (I've had many such dealing with associations over the years). I assume an estate sale would qualify in their minds regardless.

telling quote at the end:  Matt Schembechler, an Ann Arbor businessman, is suing his father, the university and 12 other defendants, accusing them of trying to ruin his sports memorabilia business and damage his reputation.

I think that tells you all you need to know about Matt Schembechler.

Went to High School with Matt, Geoff and Chip (Bo's step son's).  Matt was a dick then and getting in trouble, sounds like nothing has changed.  Geoff was a good guy who ended up with some Domino's stores on the east coast.

He was born after Bo became coach at Michigan. Actually Bo and Garvie Craw (fullback on '69 team) were both in the hospital together when their kids were being born (1970 ?).

The 3 named were Millie's sons from a prior marriage. Bo adopted all of them, thus the name Schembechler for them. Matt, as noted, has had issues over the years.

Schemmy spoke at Bo's Memorial. I believe he works as a scout for an NFL team and lives in southern Ohio.

Was this the same son who got nabbed in that whole scheme to sell the original wooden bleachers from the stadium in the 90s? They were all laser etched and some were signed by Bo, this whole thing, and the University pounced on him... Bo's family situation has always seemed a bit odd to say the least. Also, I can't be the only one who has noticed how Cathy has essentially clamped down on establishing Bo's legacy, and Millie has been almost written out. Millie was Mrs. Michigan for almost 25 years, a beloved member of the family, and now it's like she never existed.

The original notice of the "estate sale" had the odd wording of the "last Schembechler in Ann Arbor." If it had really been Bo's stuff, the copy promoting the sale would have used his name about 20 times.

But dammit, I really wanted Woody's bones.

I dated Matt for several years in the 90's. Bo was a great coach, but a shitty dad to his adopted sons. He married Millie for an instant family and photo ops to get hired by UM and look like "a family man". The adopted boys were pawns. If you behaved and played the role you were rewarded like Geoff and the Dominos franchises. Matt did not agree with how Bo treated them or his mom. I have been in rooms with the both of them and they would ignore each other. The only son that mattered to Bo was Schemy. After Schemy was born no one even knew Bo had other sons. No one dares to talk negative about the great one, you must protect the image. The university must protect the image. It's a money machine. People who knew the truth would never speak up, they wanted a to remain close to the celebrity. Matt had the contract to get the original wood benches from UM as the new seats were installed in the Big House. UM would deliver them to his warehouse. He would remove the plastic covering on the original wood benches and make items out of them. I know all about this process first hand. Matt's non-profit, items made from the benches went directly to the doctors doing Adrenal Cancer research at UM Hospital. The golf tournament and other fundraiser that Bo did in Millie's honor went to UM Hospital for cancer research but UM Hospital would decide what cancer research the money would go towards. Matt did not agree with this as he wanted it to go toward Adrenal cancer research to honor his mother. He and Bo had a big riff about this because the tournament advertises that it is to raise money for Adrenal cancer research. If you went to the tournaments you might have noticed that Millie's first sons were seated in the back or asked to carry people clubs to their cars and eventually were not invited. Bo would say he had no evidence of Matt donating to Adrenal cancer research. Bo tried to use the university to slander Matt and wanted to stop Matt from getting the benches and stop Matt's non-profit, but Matt had the contract. Bo went to the hospital and eventually made sure the doctors Matt gave money's to could no longer except the checks from Matt for their research. Bo was not a great father and Matt has issues, but who can blame him. Bo's life was all football. Yes, Cathy has made sure to wash Millie out of the record. Including selling Millie's things in a garage sale within weeks of marring Bo and not letting the boys take what they wanted of their moms. Matt recieved boxes of junk that were things of his moms, like kitchen gadgets, stuff that didnt sell. Matt had to buy some of his moms things at the garage sale. Within weeks Cathy had all Millies engraved silverware reengraved with her inicials. Bo was Cathy's third marriage to older rich men that would die and leave her everything. She has been sued by past step-children. Her own kids live like palpers. She had money from the previous marages but did not have the celebrity. Bo afforded her that. Matt used to sell medical supplies and used to assist in surgeries when screws were first introduced. The bones I am assuming were a part of his old business.
