Scenario where UM gets into playoff with loss to OSU.

Submitted by Bones032 on November 9th, 2018 at 11:25 AM

Since this is a semi bye week(lol Rutger) my mind has been wondering a bit.

Starting thinking about what would happen if we lose to OSU. And I think there is still a path to the playoff if we do.

There are only 9 teams with less than 2 losses(my Alma mater UCF doesn't count, sorry Knights). The 3 undefeateds, plus 6 1-loss teams. So we would need the other 5 1-loss teams to lose and we would need to win the Big 10 CG.

The scenario: OSU loses to MSU tomorrow to lockup the east for us. Alabama, Clemson and ND win out, which gives Georgia 2 losses. West Virginia and Oklahoma lose 1 more time each, there's a good chance they play head to head twice, so splitting that works. Then we would just need Washington State to lose to Washington or in the Pac 12 title game.

That leaves 11-2 Big10 Champ UM competing against a 2 loss Big12 champ, a 2 loss Pac12 champ Washington State and a 2 loss Georgia who didn't win the SEC. We would have by far the 2 best losses and probably 3 top 25 wins. It's not a slam dunk, but I think we would have the best resume.

Good to see all of you have forgotten about our record vs OSU and don't have the PTSD that I do. Also what else is there to do during Rutgers week but speculate? Why not plan for the worst case just in case?

This season is better than I expected regardless how this plays out against OSU and the playoffs.  However, I would prefer a win against OSU over anything else, including not getting into the playoffs and/or losing our next 2 games.  OSU must be beaten!

Bacon was on the radio this morning arguing that we should want OSU to win tomorrow so our strength of schedule will be better when we beat them.  Nevermind the fact that the other top 4 teams haven't beaten anyone with a pulse all season.

I don't care if it helps or hurts us, you root for OSU to lose every game, in every sport, until the end of time.

If OSU wins, we get to beat an OSU team that just beat an under-ranked MSU. If OSU loses, we already beat a team that beat a top 10 OSU and get to beat a still-ranked OSU at the end of the year.

No scenario makes losing to OSU anything but bad, and neither alternative is really better than the other.

Eh, we're not D'antini.  If Michigan needs an OSU victory in order to accomplish something -- e.g., a Big Ten basketball championship -- so be it.

Mind you, I'd never root for OSU.  I'd just root against their opponent. ;)

The same holds true this weekend.  This idea of "we want OSU to look as good as possible" is asinine; doubly so when you consider that an OSU loss tomorrow means Michigan -- assuming they don't crap the bed in The Birthplace™ -- can win the Big Ten east with a victory on Senior Day against a team that hasn't won in Ann Arbor since Jim Harbaugh was three.

In a perfect world, MSU and OSU could tie, which is like both teams losing.  Since there are no more ties, I'll root harder against OSU this weekend than I will against MSU.

Exactly. Guys on this blog are always worried about strength of schedule. No team in the country has had a stretch like Michigan just had. Only one other team could pull it off at this point. End of story. If Michigan wins out and doesn't get into the playoff, it's because of bullshit and a bunch of stupid fuckers running the show that shouldn't be. I wouldn't care to be a part of that circus anyway and be one of those teams picked. I'd take the high road knowing what the situation was, who was involved and be just fine and happy with that. That's just me.

Are you that fucking bored where you need to talk about this now?  I won't be pounding my chest if Michigan has 2 losses and gets to CFP.

Mental gymnastics aside, I don't think that a two-loss B1G champ has any shot of getting in this year. If we manage to lose another game, yet still make it to Indy, we're going to be facing a team with a pretty shitty record (even if they're ranked).

Even as a Michigan fan, I don't think we would deserve to go to the playoffs after losing to OSU and ND (the two best teams we will play all year).

It's not even a done deal that we make the playoff with one loss. A Georgia victory over Bama puts us on thin ice or outside looking in. Let's not try to figure out how to get in with two losses.

Win the next two games and beating OSU guarantees us a B1G title regardless. That's a goddamn successful season. Anything that comes after that - B1G Championship game, Playoffs, that' all gravy, baby.

They would not be in in this scenario. Their best win would be....Northwestern? Penn State? MSU? Wisconsin?

Whoever would win the Big 12 would have a better resume at that point

why would you even waste your time typing all this bullshit? who even cares if they make the playoffs? will you really care more if michigan loses to osu, but some how stumbles into the playoffs, or wins out with 12 straight wins plus an outright big ten chaimpionship? if they do the latter i don't care if they are in the playoffs or not.

It would need something like 2014. A lot of uncertainty about who takes the #4 spot, and Michigan would have to absolutely steamroll someone in the Big Ten title game. Like a 63-0 shellacking type of game
