SB Open Thread vs NEB @ 1pm BTN

Submitted by MGoSoftball on

The SB Team is playing in Lincoln this afternoon in a rubber match against NEB.  On Friday, NEB squeeked out a 1-0 win in the bitter cold.  A walk came back to bite us.

Yesterday, we came back with revenge and Romo and So-Lo went deep.  In SB terms we say they put the bats in the oven overnight to warm them up.

Today's game-time weather should be about 65F so the cold will not be a factor.

I believe they reduced the size of the strike zone.  Besta's best pitch is the rise ball and what was a strike last year is now being called a ball.  i don't think she's been able to recover.

Two bunts put runners on first and second with no outs for Michigan. Falk is up with a new pitcher for Nebraska. Let's turn the line up and put some runs across.

Montemarano almost got picked off at 1st base earlier in this game.  Wonder if the 1st base coach reminded her of that, perhaps not.

This is too close for comfort. Not great that we have our 7-8-9 up going into the 7th inning. Going to need big things from the bottom of the order. Would hate for them to walk off

1-2-3, Betsa slams the door!  Rough game, tough series, but to get out of Lincoln with 2 out of 3 is not too bad.  Might cost us that shiny #1 ranking, and it's one more bit of our margin of error in the Big Ten we've used up, but I'll take it as a weekend on the whole.  Most encouraging part is that the pitching was great on Friday & Saturday.  Struggles came back today, but there was progress.

1. Minnesota (8-1)
2. Ohio State (9-1-1)
3. Michigan (7-2)
4. Penn State (8-3)
5. Northwestern (5-4)
6. Nebraska (6-5)
7. Wisconsin (4-4-1)
8t. Purdue (5-6)
8t. Indiana (5-6)
10t. Illinois (3-6)
10t. Maryland (3-6)
12t. Michigan State (2-7)
12t. Rutgers (2-7)
14. Iowa (1-10)

Michigan will move ahead of Ohio State with a sweep, assuming they also take care of Michigan State on Wednesday.  Minnesota plays 2 against Wisconsin on Tuesday and 3 at Rutgers this weekend.

There is a 23-game schedule so Minnesota will only have 9 games left after this weekend--3 each against Nebraska, Maryland and Iowa.  Michigan will have 10 left--1 against MSU plus 3 each against Maryland, Penn State and Rutgers.  The Penn State series is on the road; the other two are at home.
