Saturday Night Football: ATL vs DET Open Thread

Submitted by Big_H on December 22nd, 2012 at 9:27 PM

Looked at the board and wondered why this hasn't been posted. So I thought to myself what a damn great time to make my first thread. Honestly though I have no idea about making a thread, and ths one most likely won't end well. As i'm typing this some other young Mgoblogger will beat me to the punch and hit the submit button seconds before me, but to hell with it I'm drinking ice cold beer and might have my first ever thread on the greatest blog alive. Cheers my friends!

What are the thoughts on the game so far? Down 14-3 in the 2nd quarter.

Also Megatron!? Will he pass rice?

UPDATE- It's halftime and we are down by a couple scores. What would you like to see the lions counter with this next half?

Calvin Johnson is also 65 yards away from rice, does he break the record tonight?

Who do you to see the Lions take in the up coming draft?

My thoughts? The lions are going to get run out of their own building on the national stage, while Calvin does his best to carry the entire offense. I have no real faith that the Lions can win tonight, but I've been surprised before.

CJ deserves to be on a winning team with a coaching staff that cares about the program. No wonder Barry left this franchise the way he did.

You don't just walk into Ford Field and expect to compete the the mighty Lions. Let's lose this one for Jim! Come on men, it's time to lay down!

Yes.  This is exactly what I want to do.  I'm going to become a Pats fan.  Also, I'm going to start rooting for Alabama football, Kentucky basketball, SF Giants, LA Kings, Heat, and Man U.  I love jumping on bandwagons instead of rooting for my hometown teams.  It's so much more fun that way.

You realize that Illitch bought the Tigers in '92, had 12 losing seasons, including an 119 loss season, correct?  He only started pouring money into the Tigers once the NHL got capped.  I take it during those years you said the Tigers would never win with Illitch as their owner, and started rooting for the Yankees?

During the late 80's-early 90's the Pats sucked too.  They even had a 1-15 season.  Are you still going to keep rooting for them if they hit another 1-15 year?  Or are you going to jump back on the Lions bandwagon once they start winning?

I'm sorry, but I'm not going to stop rooting for my hometown team because they suck.  I've been spoiled with Michigan football, the Wings, the Pistons to an extent, and more recently the Tigers.  One shitty pro sports team to root for isn't really that bad.  Plus it makes it more fun when they actually win.

Last 50 years, name the one constant for the Lions. /argument.

The Fords have a history of being cheap with both the coaches and the general manager. You get what you pay for.

I still root for the lIons, but I am not delusional to believe that Schwartz and Mayhew are not the second coming of the Millen regime. The Lions are IMO, the worst franchise in professional sports. That is saying a lot considering Jordan's mishandling of the Bobcats. Illitch prior to buying the Tigers had a history of turning a franchise around in the Wings. The Fords have done NOTHING in 50 years. NOTHING. They have let cronyism run rampant in the administration.

I guess I'm failing to see that there was an "arguement" to begin with.

I'm not denying that the Ford's are horrible owners.  But even the beloved Illitch was once owner of one the worst franchise in sports.  Honestly, if the NHL was still un-capped, and Illitch still owned the Tigers, do you think the Tigers would be where they are today?

Look, if you want to start rooting for teams you have no affliation with just because they win, that's on you.  I guess I just don't understand it.

Illitich had already proven he could be a good owner with the Wings. And the Tigers were bad for what, maybe a decade under his ownership? The Lions have been bad for over 50 YEARS under the Fords. There's a difference between not figuring it out yet, and not being able to figure it out.

I get not rooting for another team. I'm just not sure how one becomes a big fan of a team that's been bad their whole lifetime. Unless you are retirement age.

Bingo. The Fords are the one constant in the equation for the Lions. I am not saying I will not root for them. I will. However, the writing is on the wall. The Fords are cheap when it comes to the franchise. Hiring retread after retread or the latest flash in the pan assistant as the HC on the cheap gets you the current results. The Fords are terrible owners.

Illitch turn around the Wings in less than a decade from the Dead Wings era. Illitch has done the same with the Tigers. The Fords have done NOTHING in 50+ years. It is no comparison or it is a terrible comparison. There is a reason the public was pushing for Illitch to buy the Pistons.

50 years of futility is enough data to show what you are going to get with the Ford family.

What a disappointing year, after last year got my hopes up.  I should have known better than to get my hopes up too much with the Lions.  So, yet again, I'm back to hoping they lose so they can get a higher draft pick.  Feels like every year I'm doing that.

They need to stop wasting high picks on players with an injury history.  Best and Broyles.  Waste of two top picks.  I didn't have a problem with the Lions taking them.  They are both talented players.  High risk high reward.  They just took them way too high.  Best should have went in the 2nd round at best, probably should have dropped to the 3rd round just because of injuries.  I think Broyles is a great player, but he should have went more around round 4/5.

I really hope they can draft Te'o.  I wanted him with the Lions ever since I saw him try to run down Gallon during the UTL game.  Milliner would be my 2nd choice.

Even worse was the drafting of Titus Young and Fairley with all their history. Now I know they both can be productive if kept under control (especially Fairley), but that's a job for Belichick or Coughlin. The Lions can't afford to gamble on players with off the field issues right now.

I agree to an extent.  They need some character, so I don't completely disagree with the drafts.  Fairley hasn't really done anything to damage his self image besides being caught with weed.  They just need to cut ties with Titus though.  That guy is a cancer and should never play another down in the NFL again.  Sucker punching a teammate is one thing, lining up wrong and running wrong routes on purpose after everything he's done is a disgrace.

They cut Aaron Berry as an example, but do nothing to the rest of the players that are actually causing problems.

Does Bell have any idea that getting out of bounds stops the clock?  Twice he was running towards the sidelines then cut it upfield only to get tackled and keep the clock running.  Unreal.

This Calvin Johnson record (that he will soon get) is great for him personally...but it is another black eye on an embarrassing organization due to the fact that they are 4-10 and most likely will end up 4-12.  This is the most meaningless record in NFL history.  At least it gives Gruden and Trico something to talk about.
