Saturday morning football games: good or bad?

Submitted by crg on

I just had a chance to look over the list of televised games going on this weekend and saw that they're doing another game from Ireland (Georgia Tech vs BC) which airs at 7:30am Saturday morning.  Personally, I love being able to catch meaningful college football from (almost) dawn to (well after) dusk on a holiday weekend.  However, this also could be very inconvenient for those up late Friday or those traveling in the morning.  So, two part question for the board:  1) Are early Saturday games a good thing?  2) If UM considers doing this at some point, would you support it?

A lot of stadiums used to use terraces, which by virtue of lacking seats could pack thousands more people than equivalent seated grandstands. I believe the Maracana (famously seating 200,000) was built this way. So were some of the biggies in Europe, like Camp Nou and Estadio de Luz. With basically mandatory conversions to seats, plus modern humane seating layouts, their capacities have all shrunk. Many within the last 15 years. Our stadium's more compact bench arrangement permits a high capacity to remain.

2012 it was ND/Navy.  2014 PSU/UCF.

Both those games drew over 48K fans and they're supposedly anticipating 45K for the game on Saturday.  The locals there DO like football and do show up for the games.

I personally know 2 BC fans who are making the trip --- one of them lives in the Bay Area.  That's a loyal fan.

Nah there's too many iconic college stadiums I'd rather see UM play in.

However, I like other teams doing it. Having breakfast and maybe a bloody mary while watching a live game first thing in the morning sounds awesome. Loved it when the Lions played in London.

plan to watch but would be happy to catch instead of Game Day, then I like the option.

GT vs BC fits the bill perfectly.  It's not a game I'm going out of my way to watch, but if it's on whenever I happen to get out of bed and start drinking, that's a bonus.

Any game that I actually plan for I'd much rather see during normal hours.  And don't even think of putting Michigan in that time slot.

Yeah I agree with this. It's kinda like a MAC game on a Tuesday night. I'm not watching BGSU-NIU on a Saturday, not only because it wouldn't be televised anywhere, but I'll watch it when there are no other games on. Same goes for a BC-GT game on early. I likely won't watch that one since it starts at 4:30am my time, but if there was say a 6am game my time I might catch the second half before the 9am games start. My kids are young and don't get the whole sleeping in on weekends thing yet.

Football from start to finish on a holiday weekend means that I have a built in excuse to do as little as possible on a Saturday, or indeed if I am going to the game, it just serves as a primer of sorts, so I can live with it.

Now, here's the other side of that - I am not naturally a morning person. As it is, I struggle with noon games, only able to contemplate coffee much before noon. My attendance at a 7:30 AM Michigan game would be in question certainly.

Failure, I know.

I'm 6 hours behind eastern time, and I love noon starts (6am for me).

There is nothing better than watching a Michigan win first thing in the morning. Game is over by 9am, so you have the entire day to do whatever you (and your significant other) please.

Thats my EPL time. I wouldnt mind any dog college games on early Sat if the EPL games are a blowout. But for those us who also dig the other football, Sat and Sun AM are already booked with live sports.

Living on the west coast, noon games = 9AM which, now that I'm used to it, are great.  Football brunch and day drinking is a blast, and I have time to do other stuff that afternoon.  Much before that though and its just too early for me.  But early games, yeah, a fan.

I lived 10 years on the West Coast between Cali, Hawaii, and Seattle. I loved getting up on Saturday morning and watching Michigan play. It spoiled me. When I moved back to the East Coast, waiting for a 3:30 game sucked.
