Sandusky continued to bring his prey to practice

Submitted by Franz Schubert on

The monster continued to bring his victims to practices even after the eye wintness report by McQuery. No one had any issues with it apparently?

"In other words, this is a case in which McQueary, in the years after he actually saw Sandusky raping a little boy, came face to face with Sandusky in the company of the little boys Sandusky was raping at the time – and he continued to nothing further about it."

There is no limit to how many threads should be made to revel what a sick asshole he was. I hope people read all these threads to realize how bad this situation is. And if just one person who reads this blog knows about a child molester and gets enough courage to report that person, then all of these threads will be more than worth it.

....in the collective opinion of the board that Jerry Sandusky is, in fact, a sick asshole and child molester. You would get no argument there. How many  times do we really need to re-establish the prevailing opinion though? I think we've passed redundant and ventured into "OMG! My Control and "V" keys are stuck!".

....but I guess the way that title was framed made me think, "Why can't this go in the Sandusky Questions thread?"

Anyway, the fact that it  was allowed to go on long after the "retirement"  of Sandusky, that McQuery witnessed it and basically tried to put it out of mind and that Paterno reported it to the AD and not to the police straight away utterly floor me. I wouldn't even know where to address the systematic abandonment  of  morality among those that were involved.

If you don't like the thread topic don't click on it and read it. If you can come up with a better topic go ahead and do that. It is that simple. This is a huge story about one of the biggest programs in our conference. The amount of thread police on here astounds me. If the mods don't like the thread they will remove it. Until then DON'T CLICK AND STOP CRYING.

It's not exactly like the story and what surrounds it are static, so you can probably expect more threads.

The question I ask is how can Paterno coach Saturday?  Are you going to have thousands of students/fans with the "Joe Paterno" chant that they do (and did at the presser in State College today).  My calculated guess is that he won't be Saturday's coach, but who knows.

....is an excellent question. I think the PR nightmare gets about 100x worse if he is near the stadium on Saturday. Thus far, however, it seems like PSU has done everything other than what they should do in this situation, so part of me would not be totally shocked if he was there, but that would look REALLY bad now.

Not really...there is probably no more heinous story you will ever see in sports...so expect a lot of threads.

The magnitude of this is starting to sink into the MSM - it is now leading almost almost every outlet - TV, radio, internet, print.

I am betting Paterno is out by tomorrow - maybe not but that seems to be where it's heading

I'm trying to think of anything comparable in American life in general. How often do you have rich, powerful and respected men involved in either a heinous crime or a coverup like this?

I'm struggling to think of the last time a story broke about people with so much harming people who were so vulnerable.

justingoblue

November 8th, 2011 at 7:29 PM ^

Yea, because he didn't have a coverup by some other really respected people. Michael Jackson might be just as bad as Sandusky, but it was Sandusky's friends that turned this from sick and shocking to completely unfathomable. I think people accept that there are depraved individuals in the world, it's the way PSU, as a respected institution, didn't give a crap that made this a whole other dimension.

SysMark

I don't think there is anything comparable, which is why I think you are just seeing the very start of this...it is really, really bad.  How do people deal with this?  How does that university move on with that football program?  This is almost beyond comprehension.  How do you walk in that locker room, in those showers, without thinking of this?  I'm not kidding, they may have to bulldoze buildings.

And that does not begin to describe the devastation they have wrought on those boys.  How utterly self-absorbed and selfish on the part of Paterno to put himself, his regime, and most importantly his precious records above the welfare of defenseless children.

Makes me sick

uh...come on...what about the Catholic church both in America and out.  That scandal is still repercussing.  That is pretty much the same story but on a much wider scale.  The timelines give moral compass to any PSU official who says this has no precedent.  It was well into the media while this all started to go down.

PSU should not play football the rest of the season.  They need to clean house and stand down while the organization (school wide) cleans this up.  It's the only course worthy of discussion.  I would like PSU to leave the B1G if they take any action less than this.  I don't want anything to do with that school until they stand up to this.  Enough is known to take immediate action.  Paterno should certainly never appear or speak officially for PSU again in public.

It's just so much to get one's mind around....I don't think I ever will actually. I don't think any of us could. I read the indictment last night....holy shit.  That's my entire assessment of it.

I know there will be more threads. I guess it was "too much, too depressing"  for a moment. My apologies.

Not saying we need half the board filled with Sandusky, but 7 of 15 topics are PSU related, and an 8th was an attempt to MGoDistance itself from the scandal. I realize it's a slow day, but this is a Michigan Blog FERGODSAKES!

I don't think Sandusky did what he did for the attention or welcomes the attention. We keep talking about this story because it's quite possibly the worst thing to ever happen in college football, and it deeply changes the way that we think about Joe Paterno, Penn State, and college football in general. This story isn't really about Sandusky, it's about the people around him who did nothing as he preyed on children. I think it's a perfectly appropriate and human response to keep talking about this.

In defense of the OP this is the biggest story ever in CFB.  I am still trying to get my head around it all and it is def. the dominant topic around the water cooler at work.

What we should hope:

1. The victims get some justice

2. Law prevails, moral justice prevails

3. The B1G takes Paterno name off the trophy.  It should be Schembechler or Yost on that item

4. The PSU players who wish to leave immediately are granted immediate release by the NCAA. The PSU players who wish to stay to renew their University should be lauded.

5. Serves as an example as to why victims with no leverage (young people, older people, disadvantaged, etc) require vigilant protection.

McCreay is a pussy and deplorable person for not intervening to save the kid.  Paterno has been cocooned in his little nest for too long and is not in touch with the real world.  Both are dispicable people and need to be punished for allowing this pedophile to continue.

I've had some experience with these type of people (Sandusky) but I didnt know it at the time......One of my closest friends growing up, from age 8 until we were about 24... was convicted a few years ago for raping and murdering his girlfriends little 4 year old boy....which happened years after I lost touch with him.  He is now in Jackson state prison for life, deservedly so.

When we were in our late teens, he started using drugs and acting weirder and weirder so I essentially stopped being in contact with him in our early 20s ...and then he went in to the Marines to try to get his life in order.

It was a great shock to hear what he did to that kid... I was best friends with this guy, and spent thousands of hours with him growing up....I knew that he could be a bit crazy...but that was more fun type of crazy as kids and I had no idea that he was that type of monster inside.... however had I had known or seen anything that lead me to believe that he was....I would have stepped in immediately.   Now, I live my life knowing that just about anyone I meet is capable of doing this horrific thing.

Ya know, I thought of something that really creeped me out that I didn't see posted anywhere here or anywhere else on the internets, but I remembered an interview I saw with Don Canham and he said that when he made the Bo hire, his first option was actually Joe Paterno (who turned him down).  Had Canham been successful in the hiring of Paterno, Sandusky may have also ended up here at some point.  Granted there is a strong probability that the athletic department would have handled it much better than PSU's did, but I would say Michigan really dodged a bullet with that one.

the trigger effect... well Sandusky played at PSU and was a GA there at the time...so perhaps he would have stayed there had Pa came here... anyway Im certainly glad that Pa didnt come here... never really liked him, always thought that he was an odd bird... Bo was a much better fit for the 70s at Michigan.

November 8th, 2011 at 7:07 PM ^

I just read all I care to about this story and I can't honestly believe anyone would want to play football at PSU. Every coach on that staff turned a blind eye to a serial child rapist since 1998 (maybe) or 2002 (definitely). That is the most sickening thing I have ever heard. How could anyone want to play there? This could be similar to a death penalty for that program unless they usher out the entire staff and possibly much of the athletic department. It's fucking unbelievable and makes me fucking sick. They knew it was happening and did nothing for at least 9 YEARS. How many more victims is that? McQuery did nothing when he saw a 10 year old boy being raped and he is a coach?!? Unreal. Seriously.

You guys are acting like Sandusky has already been found guilty. So many things about this case just don't click. YOu guys should wait until the trial actually happens before jumping the gun.

justingoblue

November 8th, 2011 at 7:17 PM ^

Obviously he still needs to stand trial (actually I almost think he won't) but the case seems solid. You have three different investigations going back a decade, eight victims testifying, one (formerly) respected QB coach also testifying, and PSU's internal investigation leading him to be banned from contact with children on campus. On top of that, you have Sandusky, who I believe admitted to showering with children in the 1990's. I'd bet the farm that he's guilty as hell.

Jinxed1

November 8th, 2011 at 9:39 PM ^

Who knows what he's looking for... He certainly wasn't rushing to report anything to the police a decade ago.... and the three people he actually did talk to all say he said something different from what he's now saying he said. But you guys seem to think that it's much more likely that the 3 of them heard McQueary say that he witnessed Sandusky have anal sex with a child and decided to brush it all under a rug and act like nothing happened. Sure... that's super credible.

yeahrice

November 10th, 2011 at 11:07 PM ^

Am I the only one who thinks Mcqueary was absolutely terrified about not only what he saw but also what would happen to him if he DID go directly to the police? Before I get negbombed and the like please hear me out. I think that by not breaking up the boy and Sandusky was a huge mistake on his part, just like I believe he should have gone to not only Paterno, but the police as well. anyways back to my point. Joe Pa ran the town, university, everything. If the police hear this heinous allegation from some GA, they will go straight to Paterno and ask him wtf is going on. JoePa would probably say he hasnt heard of anything and that he would look into it. McQueary would then tell his story and JoePa might do something, he might not. but I bet he tells McQueary to come to him (joePa) first next time or else risk his career. You think Paterno couldnt prevent him from getting a coaching job, or probably any job for that matter in Pennsylvania? I bet he could. McQueary was also probably destroyed to see what was happening and knew that if he came public, he would ultimately put Penn State to shame and take the blame for blowing the whistle. He would be hated more than he is now – I heard at halftime of the GaTech- VaTech game he would not attend the game for safety reasons, as the guy is receiving death threats. Once again, coming forward is the RIGHT THING TO DO, but if your job, what you love, and possibly your life is on the line, would you do the right thing? I would like to think I would and sitting here typing it is easy to say what I would have done in that situation. However, being in that situation is completely different and is something that I have never (and hopefully never) experienced. FWIW I think McQueary should be fired as well, but I do think he was in a very very difficult situation. At 28 you are at a place you have probably wanted to work for your entire life, you are working up the ranks and then you see something terrible, something you know will destroy everything you love. Should you cry “wolf” Absolutely, no questions asked. But I see why it happened the way it did. JoePa was the most powerful man in the state. He controlled the politicians, the police and the media. Would you want to cross him?

Rant over.
