Sam Webb's Gut Says Shea Patterson Not Going to Transfer to Michigan

Submitted by Tedbossman on

His gut tells him Michigan is extremely happy with Brandon Peters and Dylan McCaffrey. He was told that if Patterson transfers it would be out west, where there are more desirable QB scenarios. He also says Patterson would have to sit out a year.

I am not at all saying Milton won't work out great and become a superb QB.  But how could one possibly predict where he will be on the depth chart.  He is still in HS.

Plus, have you seen Milton's film?   Or his numbers this year?

On film he has a super strong arm, but a very weird throwing motion.  Maybe that won't matter.   Or maybe it will take two years to correct.

His pass completion percentage and TD/INT ratio this season were not great.  He had a less than 50% completion rate.  Why?  Poor receivers?  Inaccurate?  Too willing the throw into coverage?  I have no idea.

Not at all saying he will be bad.  But he is not the polished sort of propect that is a sure fire thing.  If JH offered him, then he probably has high upside.  But there is nothing to suggest that he is a sure fire prospect.

Hamilton pressed for Milton. I don't think he would have been offered if not for that. I see Doyle beating him out and would not be surprised at a position change. There is no way he beats out McCaffery and there is a lot that can change, like who they get next year. If they could have pulled in the kid from Cali all of this would be mute. Michigan is set for years with Peters and McCaffery and will not see anyone else for the next three to four years.

I think everyone assumes based on year/starzzz which guy will start. This is going to be a strong battle next year between Mcaffrey and Peters, eventually leading to a strong battle between Doyle and Milton. Yes, Milton has more starzz, but watch the tape, Doyle gets through progressions, can make throws, and can move a little.

First, we have no idea if Milton will work out. Second, imagine a scenario where Caff wins the job next year--under that scenario, based upon the current trend in college football, there is a better than average chance that Peters would transfer rather than be 2nd team for the rest of his career. If that occurred, we are instantly f-ed again at QB with no deoth. This is why IMO the staff is looking for a transfer.

If there were a chance to transfer to Michigan and start, Speight would've stayed. I can't see his transfer as anything other than a ringing endorsement of the two young guys. It looks like the light has turned on for Peters and he really responded to the challenge as the season went on.

Yep. Not to say he was not good. I thought he looked really good for a redshirt freshman leasing a harbaugh offense with a line still coming together and a banged up and young wr core. But he did still look like a freshman at times. I don't think he was ready weeks before he started like many assume he was. Particularly because he addmitted that he struggled in fall camp.

JH simply told Speight the truth--that it will be another open competition for the starting job, just like in the prior two years (except with maturing Peters and McCaffrey as stronger competition).

If so, maybe Speight felt that with his degree in hand, and only one more year of eligibility, he needed to be at a place where he would be a near guaranteed starter.

Honestly? I'm fine with this. Patterson is really really good but I have faith in our young QBs, and there were some red flags about his recruitment (apparantly his family demanded a job for his brother at Ole Miss and some other shit). Plus, bringing in another guy could send a message to Peters/McCaffrey that the coaching staff doesn't have faith in them, so this is a good sign that the coaches have faith in them.

Offer Sam some Tums™ !!! To be honest, though, I'm fine with not getting Shea Patterson as long as we do get an experienced grad transfer capable of being the backup in case of injury to Peters or McCaffrey. It scares me to go into 2018 with so little experience at the QB position. The rental of a one-and-done experienced QB solves that problem without sending the wrong message to Peters and McCaffrey, keeping "meritocracy" the operative theme on the practice field and depth chart.

Second hardest bite of any mammal and they max. out forty to fifty pounds. Awesome animal for sure. They are quite friendly to about a year of age, but after that it would not be wise to handle them. I have two GSP's and wolverines make them look lazy. LOL.
