Sam gut be rumbling

Submitted by GhostofJermain… on

Sam said this morning on WTKA that he has a gut feeling on Mustpha Muhammad who commits tonight at 6:30 pm.  MM has over 30 offers from all the big boys.  He just was in Pasadena last weekend - but Sam and the CB seem to indicate Michigan.  It's possible MM has been a silent all year, but a scheduled visit to Clemson on 11/10 should still remain on our radar IMO.  Sam also said we are going hard for multiple other TE's.  He spoke about one kid from the west coast who favors Oregon currently, but works out with Keoka and Long's trainers and the players themselves are also in his ear.  Sounds like we are hell bent on adding 3-4 TE to this class and that is not including Hutchinson jr.  Go Blue. Beat PSU!

Maybe they figure a line of all TE's will block better than the oline recruits they can get.  Beyond star rankings the composition of this class really confuses me.  We need Olinemen, interior dline and safety depth more than just about anything and haven't been able to get anything but multi year projects for any of those slots including zero interior dline prospects.

Isn't it Frey's MO to take athletic TEs that have a good frame and turn them into tackles?  I suspect our recruiting will be TE heavy as long as Frey is here.

Good and a bad thing.  The model necessitates time to develop the players -- but the need is very real right now.

IIRC, their O-line for their Super Bowl teams included guys who switched from other positions.  I actually like that for a long term solution as long as our current guys continue to improve (ie. Indiana was not an aberration).

Don't we have a current OL recruit who's about 250-260lbs right now?  This could mean more counters like the one that sprung Higdon for that long TD.

I don't know what's typical for OL recruiting, but it does make sense to me at least take 5 and as many as 7 OL next year until the OL group stabilizes a bit. Isn't 4 TE (assuming one leaves as you say) + Schoon sufficient? Basically recruit heavy on OL until the C/O 2020 are seniors.

2 OL to using up eligibility after 2017 (Kugler and Cole)

1 OL after 2018 (JBB)

5 OL after 2019 (Runyan, Newsome, Ulizio, Bredeson, Onwenu)

have 3 commits

1 more would be nice

we got 6 in 2017 (remember, Hudson moved to OL)

but the numberr of OL spots on scholarship will go up this year and next

Jones seems too small. Maybe switch to flex te if he was switching to offense. Paye just seems to have way too much upside at wse/ rush backer in some packages, to go to fb. Although, he looked good as a runner in high school. A anchor seems to be more likely when talking dl converts. Perhaps if Ron Johnson gets passed up.

It's sort of hard to throw to all of those shiny new tight ends if the QB is immediately running for his life or having to readjust his helmet after being dumped for a sack.
