Ryan Mallett Signs With Ravens, Says He's Gotten "Help" With His Issues

Submitted by BursleyHall82 on

The man with the million-dollar arm and the ten-cent head signed with the Ravens today after being cut earlier this year by the Texans for missing a team flight. But he promised John Harbaugh that he's gotten help for his personal issues. Let's hope so.

as he managed to stay in football with that behavior.

For the first time, that behavior cost him football.

I think there is a chance that being forced to choose between football and drinking/drugs will lead to Mallett choosing football.  If I were John Harbaugh & the Baltimore GM, I'd set up the contract in such a way that if Mallett chooses drinking/drugs, he's gone.  Maybe due to union rules, there's no way to do that explicitly, but a non-guaranteed contract would give Baltimore the right to terminate Mallett at any time for any reason and could be used to keep Mallett on good behavior.

One of my favorite players to create and play from NCAA to Madden. Hope he can turn things around.

I remember how excited we all were when he came to UM. I believe Brian called him a lock to be the #1 overall pick at one point. Too bad we didn't have the lemon meme back then.

Well when I was under 16 and all there was to play was cartoons, I would agree with what you said. Now that I'm much older and the games story lines rival and or destroy major motion pictures, your comment makes me believe you tried playing Call of Duty and got sick of being killed online. It's ok, I too get my ass kicked playing those games.

Why? They're fun, entertaining and good for your brain. Nothing wrong with that. It's ok to have fun when you're over 16, you can trust me on that. If it helps, I also have a BFA and a full-time salary job that I do quite well at and have been for the last 4 years. And I play video games. No shame at all.

Mallet 6'6' 245 with a cannon arm seems very similar to Flacco 6'6' 245 with a cannon arm.  Though Flacco seems to be a better decision maker from all the $0.10 head comments.

Not a Ravens fan at all but Flacco is so underrated. I know that's a common "hot take" but that guy flies under the radar despite being a winner especially come playoff season. He's no Brady in that he can't make just any receiver look good, but give that guy some modest weapons and a decent defense and he'll have your team in the conversation every year.

If he really has gotten any meaningful help with personal problems and is sincere about his self improvement, than it may be wise to just sit this year out instead. Unless there's some new fangled program that solves everything in just a few weeks that no one but Mallett knows about...

Idle hands are the devil's playground, as they say....

For someone like Mallett, it might be in his best interest to not just be sitting around doing nothing, where he could be tempted to fall into even worse habits. Sometimes getting back to work is the best distraction and solution you can ask for.

The Baltimore Sun talks a bit about his contract and the implications as they see them here - LINK

The Ravens agreed to a contract with free agent Ryan Mallett that reportedly includes a $1.5 million base salary in 2016 with an additional $1 million available in incentives. While it’s not out of the question that Mallett gets a chance to play at some point over the final three games this year, his deal immediately makes him the favorite to serve as Joe Flacco’s backup next season.

This is a great deal for the Ravens.  $1.5M is peanuts for a backup QB, so if he stays on the straight and narrow they have themselves a deal.  And if he doesn't, they can just dump him.

It's undeniable that the guy has talent, and maybe being out of the league for half a season is the wakeup call he needs. His skill set certainly fits well with Flacco's, so the thought of him on the Ravens is interesting.

It was telling to me when New England let him go. I'll be very surprised if he is ever a successful starting QB in the NFL and if he does not start he does not have the demeanor for a  back-up.
