Rutgers fans: "This game is our National Championship"

Submitted by Decatur Jack on

Remember that time when Rutgers expected to go 10-2? Well, our most hated rival is at it again.

In honor of #RivalryWeek, here are a few particularly delusional comments from various Rutgers message boards, blogs, facebook threads, and forums that I copy-and-pasted for your viewing pleasure. (No, I don't care to link to any of them. If you care that much, go look them up for yourself.)

I think Rutgers, coming home, will be angry and motivated to show the Big Ten that they are no easy task.
All I can think of, though, is the last time Big Blue came to Piscataway. It was also a prime time game. And, guess what, we won that game for our first Big Ten victory and first Big Ten field rush at home.
Michigan isn't Ohio State. I don't expect a shutout.
GOD I FUCKIN HATE HARBAUGH. STAY OUT OF JERSEY YOU FUCKIN PRICK #FENCETHEGARDEN
Is anyone honestly expecting us to win this game? Count me in. Fuck Michigan
We beat Michigan once, we can do it again. I have faith in Coach Ash. Rutgers 45, Michigan 13
If there is one game, ONE GAME on the schedule we absolutely MUST WIN, it's this one. This game is our National Championship. Michigan is the worst p.o.s. program there ever was, we have to CRUSH them. They took Peppers and Gary, fuck those dickwads. I look for Coach Ash to shock the world with a HUGE UPSET.
I agree this game against Michigan is the most important game we may have ever played.
Guys where will you all be when the final score has us up 2TDs against Michigan?
Calling it. Gary gets ejected for targeting. Peppers tears his ACL in the first quarter. Poetic Justice.
If at any point the fuckin broadcast cuts to Partridge I swear to god I might punch the couch
Game Week against Paramus Catholic West. We got this.
once we win this game people will be talking about how coach ash is building something special in piscataway. huge signatures win!
If we break the shutout, as far as I'm concerned that's as good as a W. Michigan wants to shut us out, and if we score we will have proven they are worse than Ohio State.
Will someone tell me what time the game starts? I want to DVR this game so I can rewatch it 100 times when we upset Michigan
I don't care what anyone says this game is more important than Penn State or Maryland. Michigan is now my least favorite B1G team. I want to beat them sooooo bad
To any of those Rutgers fans who said they'd take Harbaugh over Ash, fuck you
I'm not even worried about TTFP game bc we will be favored after we beat Michigan
OSU made us angry, all that aggression now goes to Harbaugh. Get ready jackass, your stupid #4 ranked team is about to lose BIG
Hey guys Michigan fans think we should leave the B1G. I'm sure they'll feel even stronger about that after we beat them
Sooooo pumped for this game. #NationalChampionship
Why are you comparing this to the national championship?
[reply]Because it is.
Michigan is sooooo overrated. imo they were better last year. this year they are B+ at best
I don't care if we lose every other game as long as we beat harbaugh and partridge I can be happy

It's rivalry week. #BeatRutgers

Yeah, agreed. I read the first comment and then posted my comment below. After reading the rest of the comments, I just cannot believe these are true feelings from real Rutgers fans.

this year I don't.  I went over the Black Shoe Diaries to take a look at their game preview and most of the comments were something like, "eh, they will probably kill us, maybe not, who cares though really."

These Rutgers fans look way more invested than the Penn State fans did.

There was a BSD (I think) roundtable piece on whether the contributors thught PSU would be better off with Harbugh or Franklin.  Four of four said Franklin.  I remember that because I thought they were right; I felt that Harbaugh would never weasel on the issue of the child sex scandal, and would get fired.

We are not the only messager boards with drinking threads.  And based on those comments Rutger's starts far earlier in the week than ours does.

haha like Rutgers had any chance of landing Peppers or Gary. Had they not gone to Michigan they would have went to any school not named Rutgers. Got to give it to the fans. Who knew that program had such passionate idiots?

I urge all M fans to not take the bait and reply to Rutgers fans.
Let's get the win and give them no attention like they deserve.

On a side note. What person wishes injury on someone 18-23? pathetic.

Back in 1980 I went to Madison to watch the Michigan game.  In the early 80's Wisconsin was not very good so a win was pretty much assured and sure enough we won 24-0 in a game that really wasnt that close.

What amazed me though was about half way through the 3rd quarter the entire student section starting singing an off-color version of The Victors and everybody knew the words.  When I asked somebody near me what the hell that was about they said "oh...like you guys dont have different words for OUR song" and I said "no we don't.  I didnt even know you guys HAD a song." which was not what they wanted to hear.  I said something like "why would we take the time to make up words to your song and learn them?  We know we're going to win."

I love it that those days are back.

Hamburgers were a nickle

And Michigan won the B1G in football about every other year

And MSU generally sucked balls and only beat us about twice a decade

And the drinking age was 18

And possession of less than two ounces of pot was a $5 fine in Ann Arbor

And we could bring kegs into the football stadium and pass up coeds

And the worst STD you could get was curable through penicillin

So Grandpa had more than cheap hamburgers going for him

Corvettes had 5-liter V8s with 180 horsepower.

Motor Trend's Car of The Year was the Chevy Citation.  My dad bought one.  It barely lasted five years.

Coors was considered an exotic regional beer that Burt Reynolds and Jerry Reed would cross several states at high risk to obtain for rich weirdos.

Robert Mugabe was elected prime minister of Zimbabwe.

Summer Olympians stayed at home due to Moscow Boycott.

Jimmy Carter was President.

Rosie Ruiz won the Boston Marathon.

Mt. St. Helens erupted.

The Lake Peigneur transformation takes place.

I moved from Detroit to Solon.

football. This one is a trophy battle for a delusional sense of historical self aggrandizement and posterity of wayward belief. Funny, how the last time Rutgers won this matchup, both teams had different coaches, and are today lightyears apart in the college football timeline of competitive growth.

You know this game means everything when it's being played at night, and when the networks get around to deciding the Rutgers gametime at the Big House, kickoff is a footnote to another debate over what's better for your life and taligaitng social calendar, noon or 3:30 pm?

The false rivalry attitude here while beyond the pale will die hard, even in ignominius defeat, the only kind of pain that can be administered on a team's fanbase hardened by unreconcilable hate and misplaced passion and on the rationalized thinking that a program that has no offense and  a defense that gives up 58 points a week earlier, now has regained a superior position with a puncher's chance to win by two scores this Saturday.

Kind of reminds you of cheering for Monty Python's Knights who say Nee; We've lost our arms and legs, but we aren't dead yet; after all, Big Blue isn't the Buckeyes and their ranking is only a  mirage.  We've gottem exactly where we want them in our NC on the Hudson.

That must have been most enjoyable. I love that other fan bases have such feelings about the maize and blue! It never ceases to amuse me how ohio fans are so obsessed with all things Michigan. At a local bar when they play osu games, they always shout out 'whatever team they're playing' sucks.....'Michigan sucks'....cracks me up everytime
