Rutgers embroiled in another athletics scandal

Submitted by Leaders And Best on

Rutgers is a mess. The AD they hired to replace the one responsible in the Mike Rice fiasco is now in the midst of her own scandal from skeletons in her closet. Combine this with the embarrassment of news that new head basketball coach Eddie Jordan never really graduated from Rutgers and you have what looks like a completely incompetent athletic dept. Good job Big Ten.

EDIT: Story out now:

EDIT #2:

New AD was not recommended by the headhunter search firm Rutgers hired but rather was added to the initial list of candidates by the Rutgers search committee chairwoman. May have never been properly vetted:

Can the B1G retract the invitiation and take someone else instead? Rutgers was a crap choice anyway.

Nobody cares about them in the NY area, they are turrible at every sport, mediocre at best in football.

But now all of this plus Mike Rice?

Give me UConn, Cincy, Kansas, Kansas State. ANYONE? Hell, I'll even take EMU.

Well maybe not EMU.

On its own, it might not be a story.  But given what's happened recently at Rutgers, its a big story.  Rutgers hired a search firm to look for candidates to replace Pernetti (who as a reminder turned a blind eye to a coach abusing his players), and Hermann wasn't one of the candidates that the firm sent back.  So they hired a firm, ignored that firm's advice, and then hired someone without doing any sort of background check at all, and got a former coach that abused her players and co-workers.  And as an added bonus, she boldfaced lied at her introductory press conference about not remembering the wedding where she A) was a bridesmaid at, B) caught the boquet, and C) was later sued for a comment she made on camera about hoping the bride/her asst coach didn't get pregnant.

The whole thing just screams total incompetence by Rutgers.

but the video you linked to is basically a "cute" wedding candid video with the bride's boss. Hopefully the Star Ledger isn't the Freep.

It's cool guys, the Debt Turtles and Scarlet Scandals are totally going to expland our geographic footprint and capture markets.

By the way it was made clear to Rutgers they joined the B1G, not the SEC, right?

Come on Rutgers.  I mean, really?  You just had to toss a coach and the AD for this kind of shit, and you hire her?  I'm sure there are two sides to every story, but considering the reason Rutgers was hiring in the first place, they should avoid anything involving abusing players like the plague.  I'm sure lots of schools beside Louisville have assistant ADs who qualify and didn't lose a wrongful termination lawsuit or have their players express a vote of no confidence in a public letter.

Agreed.  If we'd hired her to replace Martin, this would be less of a story.  MSC could say "I believe she's a changed person and will of course monitor the athletic department."  We have a strong president and regents (plus no history of player abuse) so it would be credible.  I wouldn't be happy about it, but I would believe that MSC could monitor the AD.  Rutgers has no credibility.

It's also like a bad sign that the AD isn't denying it or coming clean, but rather than saying "I do not recall".  The non denial tends to suggest that shit can still flow further downhill.

The Rutgers AD was found guilty in a wrongful termination suit by a jury, and then she lied about the details of it during her press conference. And now details are emerging about her own abusive practices while she was coaching. I think this is kind of relevant seeing this is the reason Rutgers was looking for a new AD in the first place.

The article already raised some question about why she was never questioned about her past at Tennessee during the interview process. The hiring committee did not even know about it until late in the process when she was already a finalist for the job.

I'm not sure what will happen next, but I doubt this story is going away any time soon and may be worse to keep her than hire someone fresh. May not get fired but may get pushed by Rutgers admin to step down to avoid having this issue linger.

While the AD may not get fired, this is the type of thing that should get people on the search committed fired.  You hire a firm to look for candidates, ignore their advice, and hire someone with the same checkered background that got you into the mess in the first place.

The people on the search committee had one job to do, and fucked it up in every possible way.

Well, that and the fact that a coach being "super mean" is why there was an AD opening in the first place.

Also, this is the second time the dependence upon university lawyers has left Rutgers with a PR nightmare.  I don't really blame the lawyers, especially if Hermann's memory was as conveniently spotty when she was vetted as it seems she has been with statements to the press.  I wonder if it will be enough for them to void her contract.

Is that they just had to clean house because of a coach doing similar things to what she is alleged to have done. If you're Rutgers, you can't possibly hire her knowing that, it's just dumb. I'm sure there are plenty of qualified individuals who wouldn't have people accusing them of doing exactly what got the last AD fired. You need to hire someone that shows your commitment to not letting this happen again, and you need to do your homework on every available candidate.

Maybe she's a changed person, but even if she is, this reeks of Rutgers just promoting the next person in line, and is a PR nightmare.

What did she do after making a horrible mistake 18 years ago?  She learned from her mistake and climbed the ladder, in a very male dominate profession.  18 years ago I would have been more shocked to find out that a coach wasn't insulting thier players.  It was a lot more common place back then and a lot more accepted.  So she made a mistake, I forgive her and commend her for moving forward in her life.  Now if she is still making those same mistakes, then maybe it's a story.

Just my opinion, but I think there's more than enough evidence to conclude that the woman is a sociopath. People of that type don't generally "learn from their mistakes" and evolve. That doesn't mean there's not a useful place for her in society, but I think "Athletic Director, Rutgers" is a poor choice.

Seriously, look at how she responded to the news.

P.S. In some environments "climbing the ladder" requires bad behavior. It shouldn't be automatically celebrated.

She made the mistake in a profession that isn't "very male dominated" as if that is some sort of excuse to abuse your players.  Oh, but because she was the minority gender (in college sports... where 50% of the players are women) of a girl's volleyball team she's excused?

Can Rutgers please be excused?  Makes me sick.  Now they're taking a cheater in Golson... really impressive Rutgers.  I wonder if a normal STUDENT-athlete would be treated the same???  Rutgers better get boos comparable to ohio next year.  I will certainly tell any Rutger's "fan" (if I can find one) the Big East still has a spot open for them and Big Ten fans are urging Rutgers to jump.

I never excused her actions, I simply stated that at the time, it was more of a norm for coaches to belittle thier players.  Unfortunatley there are times in America where the majority thought something was wrong, but it was so accepted that no one said anything, or they looked the other way.  That or people were so uneducated to it that no one thought twice about it.  Where's the outcry from people regarding corporal punishment, which is still used today?  Abuse is still accepted across the country, does it make it right, NO it doesnt, but it does show that Americans still have a very diffrent opinion about what is abuse and what is "education", no matter how ignorant it may be.

If she made the mistake and hasn't repeated it, then I forgive her for being human, not for being a woman.

I don't think this is that big of a story . . . it seems to boil down to her being a jerk 15-20 years ago.  But it is pretty funny that they basically hired the female equivalent of Mike Rice.  They sure can pick 'em.

I have a feeling that if the Big Ten knew what was about to happen, they would have found another school to invite into the conference.

Wouldn't this have been a non-issue if she had just admitted to it and didn't lie? She seemed to be obviously joking in the video too(there may have been some level of truth, but it was said in a joking manner).

As of now, this is a story but not a huge story or even close to being a scandal. We will see what else comes about, if anything, and go from there.
