Rutger goals

1. Win the game. Obviously. Even though we are 40 point favorites you can never take a game for granted and this is a prime opportunity for a let down. More importantly, dominate the game like we should. Sometimes it’s good for a team to need a “wake up” late in the season, but I want to see this team stay laser focused and keep that emotional edge.

2. Get Peters some significant game action. He’s thrown one pass and it was a pick. If something were to happen to Shea, BP needs some game reps where he isn’t just handing the ball off. Hopefully he gets a couple of quarters to make some throws and build some confidence.

3. Restore Nordins confidence. Maybe we don’t kick a fg all game because we score TDs in every drive. But having Quinn knock in a couple of kicks would probably be great for his confidence. We will need him at some point this year.

4. Don’t show too much unless it’s something on film that we use to set something up later in the season. Obvious but worth pointing out.

5. Stay healthy.

I may be alone on this but it would not surprise me if Harbaugh would go with Peters if Patterson went down even if McCaffrey wouldn't have gotten hurt.  There is something to be said for "being in the fire before," and Peters was thrown to the wolves last year and had to survive it.

Honestly, if somebody asked me who I would feel more comfortable with between Peters and McCaffrey if Patterson went down the week before the OSU game I would probably say Peters.  Obviously I don't have the same intel as far as how Peters had been playing/prepping etc., but I think at a minimum he would be "not the reason Michigan won or lost the game" which I think is what you want from your backup QB.  McCaffrey would be such an unknown in that circumstance.

Last night a memory came back to me (not quite sure what triggered it) -- but anyway, I was in a bar last fall with a friend and we were discussing how the M offense could never be successful as long as Drevno was coaching the OL and calling plays. It was a bar in Saline and someone actually approached us and said, "you know the offensive struggles aren't Drevno's fault". Normally I would have "explained" to this gentleman that he's dead-wrong. Having been in Saline (where Drevno lived) and having, just a few months prior, put my foot-in-my-mouth about Dave Brandon being an "arrogant shitbag" (I said this to his cousin, without realizing it lol), I replied to the guy, "I respectfully disagree" and carried on about my night.

It feels good to be right, doesn't it??

It seems like having a QB run play with McCaffrey in the last two minutes of a blow-out was probably a mistake.  If Michigan gets a big lead, I hope that back-up players see a lot of action.

You do realize that McCaffrey is a backup?  If we're going to be protecting even our backup QBs with the playcalling, how are they supposed to gain any kind of meaningful experience?

Just need a simple decision tree ...

1. Shea Patterson - DO NOT RUN during the next two games unless there are 25 yards of green ahead of you and then get out of bounds.

2. Future back ups - Is it a TouchDOWN? Is it a First DOWN ? IF it is neither of these, then GET DOWN. I believe they tried to do that with Mariotta or RGIII ... didn't work out unfortunately....

There was less than two minutes to go in a 42-7 game.  It could have been a handoff to the 5th RB at that point in the game.

Perhaps you haven't seen any of the meaningful snaps that McCaffrey has taken this season (a 44 yard TD run against Wisconsin comes to mind).  He's certainly had game experience.....including a near TD run in the previous series against PSU.

So that's it?  McCaffrey, a redshirt freshman with 15 career pass attempts, was a finished product, in need of no more experience, because he got mop-up duty earlier in the season?

Let's be honest, this is Monday morning quarterbacking.  You're upset because he got hurt.  I agree that it sucks.  But guys get hurt in football.  That's life.

It's not Monday Morning Quarterbacking because I would have said the same thing before the play.  It wasn't the most judicious use of assets given the time remaining and score of the game (and the time of year).  Also, I hate referring to players as "assets" but I'm at work so I'm in that mode.

I understand that football is a physical game. I know that people get hurt.  Hell, the starting QBs from the last three teams that has played (Hornibrook, Lewerke and McSorley) have all missed time recently (or been pulled from games) because of injuries.

I'm totally behind the coaching staff and support their right to make decisions.  Sometimes they just make the wrong ones.  Kind of like declining the penalty on a kickoff out of bounds and not taking the ball at the 35 yardline.  I'm looking at you James Franklin.

A few thoughts about breaking 100...

  • Michigan scored 78 (including 29 in a quarter) in 2016 with a slow and sloppy start that included only 1 turnover. That's not terribly far off the pace already.
  • Michigan could hit the century mark with some combination of the following:
    • Average of 3 offensive TDs per quarter (84 pts)
    • 2 defensive and/or special teams TDs (14 pts)
    • 1 FG (3 pts)

If ever there will be a chance, this might be it. I'm confident that even if Michigan jumps out to a quick lead and turtles, guys like Tru and Turner can still keep the rout up. We'll see!

Call the same running play for an entire 75 yard drive, using 5 different backs until Wangler gets to carry it into the end zone.

Also Gary lines up as a TE and catches a pass for a TD.

That would be pretty good.

We'll need to cover the spread and dominate at least 75% of the game. As one of The Four, we can not give anyone any reason to drop us (eg, close halftime score).

Agree re Peters. The guy needs some legit reps. Maybe even prior to blowout time. Give him a package in the 2nd or 3rd quarter.

Show some throw-away plays to give Columbus State a few things fritter and waste the hours in an offhand way in advance of The Game.
